1 English 205: Business Writing Course Syllabus Dani DeVasto Office: CRT Office Hours: By appointment 1 COURSE BACKGROUND 1.1 PREREQUISITE It is assumed that you have fulfilled one of the following two conditions: you received a score at level 4 of the English Placement Test (EPT) or you passed English 102 with a C or better. Please talk with me as soon as possible if you are not certain that you meet the prerequisite. 1.2 COURSE OBJECTIVES Analyzing audience, purpose, and context in variety of business writing situations Producing genre-appropriate responses to business writing situations Employing writing as process, including research, drafting, testing, revising, and editing Gaining rhetorical awareness of the workplace and disciplinary ethics 1.3 REQUIRED MATERIALS Oliu, W., Brusaw, C., & Alred, G. (2013). Writing that Works. Communicating Effectively On the Job, 11th Edition. New York: St. Martin s Press. ISBN: Regular access to a computer equipped with the Internet, Adobe Reader, and a word processor that can create files in a.doc or.docx format 2 COURSE POLICIES I maintain the right to adjust or revise the syllabus at any time. In the event that a revision is necessary, I will make students aware in writing and with ample amount of time to adjust to the syllabus changes. 2.1 PARTICIPATION Active participation is required! Active participation in all course activities and assignments is extremely important and a course requirement. Participant will be graded under the commitment portion of your grade. If you decide not to participate actively throughout the course, you can expect to receive a lower or failing course grade. My advice: Check D2L and your UWM often, if not daily. You will not have assignments every day, of course, but you need to keep up and be monitoring the discussion boards regularly. Posting 10 posts within the hour they are due is possible but likely won t allow for your best work. ENG 205 online 1

2 2.2 LATE ASSIGNMENTS POLICY Meeting assigned due dates is critical for demonstrating progress and ensuring appropriate time for feedback on assignments. Students are expected to submit their assignments on or before the due date. Sometimes students are unable to meet due dates. In those rare cases, the following Late Assignments Policy applies: You must submit the required minimum discussion board postings during the time frame indicated. Final discussion board postings will not be accepted for credit after the deadline. With the exception of final discussion board postings, you may submit assignments late up until the last full week of the term. A penalty of ten percent (10%) of the total possible points per day will be applied to the grade you achieved on the assignment for each day the assignment is submitted after the deadline. I will grade late submitted assignments no later than a week after you submit the assignment. However, I will not offer feedback on late work. Please notify me of the late submission to ensure I have received the assignment. I may accept late work for full credit in the case of extenuating circumstances (such as hospitalization, childbirth, major accident or injury and bereavement). When this happens, it will be your responsibility to contact me before the date on which the assignment is due to let me know (a) approximately how long you expect to be away from the project and D2L and (b) approximately when you plan to resume and catch up with your assigned work. At that time, we will agree on a new deadline for that assignment and you will need to meet that second deadline in order to receive full credit for that assignment. 2.3 WRITING GUIDELINES The following are my suggestions, should you wish to pass this course and/or do well: 1) Do all assignments. You will have a number of writing assignments in this class, all of which must be completed for you to pass this course. 2) Do not plagiarize. Plagiarism is a serious offence that will result in a failing grade on the assignment and/or the course. So please, do not do it. When you use ideas, information, and material from other sources, be sure to cite those sources. Please review the English Department on Academic Dishonesty and Grievances located at 3) Class discussions are the classroom work of this course. You may find that they are the single most important aspect of this course. In order to get credit for meeting the participation deadlines, you must write a substantial post for all required postings per assigned topic per due date. There are often multiple topics going on at once. Substantial means postings that address the discussion forum prompt/questions in a thorough and thoughtful way as evidenced by wellcrafted, multi-paragraph responses. Little posts, of only one or two sentences, will not count towards meeting requirements. So, for example, if you are asked to post an initial response in a discussion forum plus 2 responses to your peers posts, you must write at least 3 substantial posts in that forum. Please bear in mind that discussion forums do not LIMIT how may posts you can make you should feel free to engage with your peer s ideas as much as possible you will be given the minimum participation requirements for each forum. 2.4 UNIVERSITY POLICIES Please see for section 5.3 of the syllabus for links to university policies on religious observances, military duty, etc. ENG 205 online 2

3 2.5 DEPARTMENT POLICY The English Department reserves the right to administratively drop students who have not attended the first week of classes. 2.6 NETIQUETTE UWM requires staff to use UWM accounts to students. I will not send s about grades to personal accounts, and I ask that you me using your UWM student account. My expectation is that you will be professional in your interactions with me and with your fellow students. In this course, that means being respectful and ethical, and I expect you will meet your deadlines, or, if you cannot, that you will conduct yourself professionally in making arrangements for the work to be delayed. And of course you must participate. Because this is a writing course, I will also expect that you use proper format, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization in your s and discussion board postings; there will be more about , in particular, in your assigned readings. I expect you to write as you would in the workplace. If nothing else, please don't do this: ================ To: From: wht did i mis? ================ I get these. I don't know who is writing to me or what course they're talking about. This behavior will be frowned upon. :) 3 COURSE STRUCTURE This course uses Desire to Learn's most basic features; nothing too fancy, no PowerPoint audio lectures, if only because there's no way I could stand listening to my own voice long enough to make 'em. Here's the basic structure of our course: Content Discussions Dropbox Grades Content. "Content" leads to all of the documents of our course. On the first day, I'd like you to read all the "General Course Documents," and the "Scavenger Hunt" listed in week 1's activities will encourage you to do so. Discussions. "Discussions" links to our discussion forums. You'll only need to go here if you're instructed to by an assignment or if you're needing to for a group assignment. Dropbox. This is where you'll turn in assignments, unless I ask you to submit them via . Grades. You may check your grade at any time. I will update them whenever there's a new grade available. 4 4 GRADED COMPONENTS The course is set up to have 3 main graded parts: 1) commitment, 2) quizzes, and 3) assignments. 4.1 COMMITMENT 20% of the grade this semester will be based on the instructor s judgment of your commitment, which represents your commitment to improving the learning environment for yourself and other students, during the discussions and other class interactions; the instructor will keep track of each student s participation and professionalism. Included in this assessment will be such behaviors as 1. Reading all required readings; 2. Participating in on-line discussions; 3. Providing thought-provoking, original, and high quality comments; 4. Submitting assignments on time and in the proper formats; 5. Treating your fellow classmates and the instructor with respect; 6. Participating with enthusiasm and interest; 7. Not flaming fellow classmates, or the instructor, online; 8. Communicating with the instructor in a respectful and timely manner. I will check my regularly, but you will be responsible for asking questions well in advance of deadlines so I have time to answer questions. This course depends upon the exchange of ideas. Our class discussions and activities make up a significant portion of the work you re expected to do in this class. Given this degree of significance, you must check in to D2L regularly to participate. Students who engage in behavior that doesn't contribute to an inclusive learning environment will be asked to speak with the instructor, and if the problem persists, referred to the Dean of Students office. Each discussion board will be open only for its allotted week and will close on Sunday at 11:59 of its assigned week. You should post one original post and comment on two of your classmates posts for each discussion board. You may view posts from previous weeks but cannot go back and make up posts. 4.2 QUIZZES Online reading quizzes will be used to assess your progress through the course. These quizzes will cover both assigned text-book readings and other assigned readings as posted on D2L. There will be about 1 quiz per week and you will be expected to complete it during the week assigned. No late quizzes will be accepted under any circumstances. Each quiz will be due by Sunday at 11:59pm of its assigned week. 4.3 WRITING ASSIGNMENTS Each writing assignment for this course will have its own assignment sheet to be provided on our course D2L site. Unless otherwise stated, each writing assignment will be due on the Sunday at 11:59pm of its assigned week. Details for those assignments will be explained as that assignment approaches. File Naming and Formatting: Submit assignments to the appropriate D2L dropbox as a.doc or.docx file. I request this format so everyone can open, comment and track changes on your writing. Please use this pattern to name your assignments: lastname_assignment name For example: Hartke_ memo.doc Please remember to save all your work in multiple locations (D2L, hard drives, flash drives, pantherfile, , etc.) so that technology issues do not result in late or missing work. 5 5 EVALUATION AND GRADING GRADING SCALE A % C 73-76% A % C % B % D % B 83-86% D 63-66% B % D % C % F 59% and below 5.1 GRADING CRITERIA A Outstanding work. Shows superior analysis of assignment. Provides excellent selection of content, organization, and wording of material to fit the rhetorical needs of the particular situation. Uses style that is fluent and coherent. Has no mechanical errors. Shows great insight, perceptiveness, originality, and thought. B C D F Good work, significantly above level necessary to meet course requirements. Has thorough, well-organized analysis of the assignment. Shows judgment and tact in the presentation of material appropriate for the intended audience and purpose. Supports ideas well with concrete details. Has interesting, precise, and clear style. Is free of major mechanical errors. Strong, interesting work, although minor problems remain. Meets all basic requirements of the course and assignment. Provides satisfactory analysis of the writing task, subject, and audience. Accomplishes its purpose with adequate content and detail. Uses details, organization, and expression appropriate for the rhetorical context. Has acceptable mechanics. Could be mailed out in the professional world. Meets the assignment but is weak in one of the major areas (content, organization, style, mechanics) or offers a routine, inadequate treatment. Shows generally substandard work with some redeeming features. Unacceptable work, in one or more of the major areas. Fails to meet one or more of the basic requirements of the course or the assignment. Fails to cover essential points, or may digress to nonessential material. Has inadequate development resulting from failure to support generalizations or from unclear relationships between generalizations and examples or details. Lacks adequate organization and show confusion or misunderstanding of rhetorical context. May use an inappropriate tone, poor word choice, excessive repetition, or awkward sentence structure. 5.2 COMPLETION REQUIREMENT A passing grade in English 205 requires course completion. This means that all assignments must be turned in prior to the end of the semester in order to pass. Even if the assignment was not completed on time and will receive a failing grade, it must be completed. ENG 205 online 5

6 5.3 UWM POLICY LINKS 1. Students with disabilities. Accommodations for absences due to religious observance shall be made available according to applicable UWM policies Students called to active military duty. Accommodations for absences due to call-up of reserves to active military duty should be made available according to applicable UWM policies Incompletes. A notation of "incomplete" may be given in lieu of a final grade to a student who has carried a subject successfully until the end of a semester but who, because of illness or other unusual and substantiated cause beyond the student's control, has been unable to take or complete the final examination or to complete some limited amount of term work Discriminatory conduct (such as sexual harassment). Discriminatory conduct will not be tolerated by the University. It poisons the work and learning environment of the University and threatens the careers, educational experience, and well-being of students, faculty, and staff Academic misconduct. Cheating on exams or plagiarism are violations of the academic honor code and carry severe sanctions, including failing a course or even suspension or dismissal from the University Complaint procedures. Students may direct complaints to the head of the academic unit or department in which the complaint occurs. If the complaint allegedly violates a specific university policy, it may be directed to the head of the department or academic unit in which the complaint occurred or to the appropriate university office responsible for enforcing the policy Grade appeal procedures. A student may appeal a grade on the grounds that it is based on a capricious or arbitrary decision of the course instructor. Such an appeal shall follow the established procedures adopted by the department, college, or school in which the course resides or in the case of graduate students, the Graduate School.
