1 The Moroccan American Pharmaceutical Sciences & Education Network Group (PharMaSeng), University Hassan II MohammediaCasablanca & FST Mohammedia Organize a Bioinformatic International Workshop October 27-29, FST Mohammedia, Morocco B IOINFORMATICS W ORKSHOP: O BJECTIVES - E XPECTED O UTCOME Bioinformatics is a discipline that holds great promises for the advancement of research and development in complex biomedical systems, as well as public health. Research and development in this important area is impacting the science and technology. Molecular medicine requires the integration and analysis of genomic, molecular, cellular, as well as clinical data and it thus offers a remarkable set of challenges to bioinformatics. The evolution of bioinformatics, which started with sequence analysis and has led to highthroughput whole genome or transcriptome annotation today, is now going to be directed towards recently emerging areas of integrative and translational genomics, and ultimately personalized medicine. Therefore considerable efforts are required to provide the necessary infrastructure for high-performance computing, sophisticated algorithms, advanced data management capabilities, and-most importantly-well trained and educated personnel to design, maintain and use these environments for future biological discoveries and medical applications. For that purpose, PharMaseng and FST Mohammedia decided to organize the Bioinformatics workshop with the great support of other partners. Attendees come from the workshop days having learned how to use several genomics resources, basic concepts and terminology in genomics and an idea of how to analyze data through bioinformatics resources. The sessions are meant to work together in sequence and are best taken together.
2 REASONS T O A TTEND T HE 2011 E VENT BENEFITS The workshops provides educational opportunities Training and/or collaboration opportunities Opportunity to meet old friends during the receptions and luncheons and make new friends NETWORKING The Networking Event for the 2011 event will be one to remember! Hosted at FST Mohammedia, this scientific and networking event provides an opportunity for participants to interact with other meeting attendees. LOCATION The workshops will be held at the FST Mohammedia. The city is located between Casablanca and the capital Rabat. Mohammedia is also a resort city containing a golf and tennis club, and many other activities. In addition, people call it madinate lwouroude wa riyada which means "city of flowers and sports".
3 WHO SHOULD ATTEND? The target audience includes scientists from different fields including Molecular and Cellular Biologists, Geneticists, Microbiologist, Statisticians, Physicians, and Graduate Students. LANGUAGE Workshop lectures and hands-on sessions will be given in English. NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS Theoretical course and Hands-on sessions: 120 (Max 150) REGISTRATION Registration deadline: October 15 th, Registration fees for the workshop: 400DH ($50) Students from Morocco 600DH ($75) - Other participants from Morocco $200 - Participants from other locations (outside Morocco). The fees include the participation to the workshop courses, the hands-out course material, coffee breaks; two lunches (Wednesday and Thursday). Travel, accommodation, and local transportation are in charge of individual participants. Accommodations: Discounted hotel accommodations to be announced soon. WORKSHOP COURSE MATERIALS Lecture notes and information package (hard and digital copies) Equipment: Computers, servers Certificates The participants are encouraged to bring their laptops equipped with a wireless connection for tutorials and hands on sessions.
4 ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS Mary E. Mangan, Ph.D. Dr. Mangan has broad experience in the field of bioinformatics. Most recently, she successfully founded and operated Biological Software Testing Services, Inc. This company provided software testing from a biological scientist's perspective for the bioinformatics industry. Prior to that, Dr. Mangan was an Application Scientist and Scientific and Technical Liaison for Incyte Genomics and Proteome, Inc. Additional experience in bioinformatics tools and training was obtained with AstraZeneca. Dr. Mangan holds a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester, and performed postdoctoral research with The Jackson Laboratory Mouse Genome Informatics group. Dr. Mangan is currently president of OpenHelix, a genomics training company. Warren (Trey) C. Lathe III, Ph.D. Dr. Lathe was a bioinformatics researcher for nearly 4 years at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in the Bork group. His research topics ranged from the evolution and regulation of bacterial genes to mapping Human SNPs to 3D protein structures. His publications can be found in top research journals such as Nature, Genetics and Trends in Genetics. Dr. Lathe has also had extensive lecturing experience at several colleges and universities including the University of Rochester, City College of San Francisco and University of Heidelberg. Dr. Lathe holds a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester in Molecular and Evolutionary Biology and completed his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University in Zoology and Art History. Dr. Lathe is currently Chief Scientific Officer of OpenHelix, a genomics training company. ORGANIZERS PharMaseng FST Mohammedia University Hassan II Mohammedia-Casablanca
