2 for So you are interested in implementing Interactive Notebooks in your classroom? Or maybe you already have and are looking for new ideas. Since 2010, I have been using INBs in my classroom of 7 th and 8 th graders. Before that I used them in 2 nd and 5 th grades but nothing like where I have come to today. Why do I tell you this? It s important to know that you will grow over time as will your notebooks. Interactive Notebooks take dedication, organization and planning. They also take patience and creativity to be effective on a regular basis. You can do this and I am here to help you! Join me as we go through the steps of why, how, where and when and I share some tips on how to make your INBs a success.

3 First of all an Interactive Notebook must be just that interactive and together in a notebook. Think of a manual that you would use to implement a new program in your classroom. You refer back to that manual throughout the process to make sure you are doing things correctly but also build on each step as you go along. Interactive Notebooks are your students goto resource for all there is to know about what you are teaching them in class. As your students are learning and developing skills they are building their own text book to be able to have as an available resource for now and years to come. Interactive Notebooks are more than just an organized way to keep notes. They are the textbook, practice area and reflection source for each topic covered. Finding the way that works for your planning/teaching style and then is also effective in your classroom is key to making your students buy in to the benefits that an INB can provide.

4 When you take time to implement INBs in your classroom you can learn vital things not only about your students but also about your personal teaching and planning style. We all know that no two students learn in the same way. While you may think a lesson is amazing and will reach them all, accommodations and modifications are easy with an INB. You may notice that there are students who need more time to process information and this will help you structure your group work, independent practice and remediation as well. Since students are staying engaged for the entire lesson students start sparking questions during learning as they are absorbing and learning materials in real time. Adding in practice with your INBs allows you to monitor and assist as needed in class and breaks down on the need to reteach.

5 Planning ahead is crucial. Know where you want your students to go and stay ahead as you are preparing your lessons so you can stay organized. Spend time letting the students make their notebooks their own by decorating the cover. Also, number the pages and build the beginning together to model format.

6 Ask yourself What is my time frame? What all MUST I incorporate during that time frame? What does your school require you to implement in your lessons? How much of the lesson do you need to guide students on creating? Taking time in the beginning to teach the basics will pay off in the long run and save you time. It doesn t matter if you have 45 minutes or 90 minute class periods per subject, INBs are still doable. You may end up spending more than one day on a lesson to implement practice and reflection time but that is okay. Other ways of fitting it all in are pre-typing notes, flippables, cloze style notes, outlines, etc. Remember that what works for one subject or one class period, won t necessarily work for all.
