1 st and 2 nd Year Teachers Check and Connect Meeting November 14, 2013
Agenda 1. Ice Breaker Activity 2. Expectations of New Teacher Mentoring and Induction Program 3. The Effective Teacher 4. Reflection and Feedback
Ice Breaker Activity Candy Bar Test! Directions: Pick a Hershey s Miniature Candy Bar of your choice and don t eat it!
Candy Bar Personality Test What does your candy bar choice tell us about your personality? Once the music starts, find the poster in the room with the picture of the candy bar that you chose. Once at the poster, greet all members of your candy personality group. Read the description of the candy bar you chose. Discuss as a group, how is this like/unlike you? Now read all of the other descriptions for the other candy bars too! Discuss with a partner at your group which candy bar BEST describes you and why.
If you picked. If you picked Milk Chocolate You are an all American; love baseball, apple pie, and mom and dad; you are talkative, friendly, warm, but you may be boring at times! If you picked Krackel You are optimistic, full of joy, and always upbeat, but sometimes a little ditzy! If you picked Mr. Goodbar You are an expert on lots of things, like to play devil s advocate, a risk-taker, and you may have dual personalities! If you picked Special Dark Chocolate You are thoughtful, insightful, march to the beat of your own drummer. You are not a risk-taker, you like to take small steps, and you may be very boring to others!
Purpose of the Program Although the state does not require a formal mentoring program, District 150 realizes the benefit of a formal mentoring and induction program. Peoria Public Schools believes that it is essential for novice teachers to be involved in activities that allow them to grow, reflect and learn about their profession. The district s program is designed to provide support for all beginning teachers on the idea that learning to teach is a continuous cycle of planning, teaching, and reflecting.
New Teacher Support/ Induction Program Beginning Teacher Program Requirements Mentee/Mentor Contact Log Log all contact hours with Cohort Group or Assigned Mentor Reflective Log Can continue to handwrite/type and turn in OR can submit online through a survey 3 reflections due at the end of each grading period Observations Mentors arrange sub once a semester for a full day for mentor/mentee. If in a cohort group, new teacher will arrange ½ day sub once a semester. Professional Development Check and Connect Meetings (5 meetings) January & April Check and Connect will be break out Sessions; various sessions to choose from Release days provided for focused Professional Development (Kagan-see next slide). You will be assigned a group and days to attend PD. 1 st and 2 nd year teachers will be sent directions to arrange sub in AESOP. January start date!

QUESTIONS?!?! New Teacher Webpage-look for updates here and all handouts!
Every day millions of students arrive at American classrooms in search of more than reading and math skills. They are looking for a light in the darkness of their lives, a Good Samaritan who will stop and bandage a burned heart or ego. -Jim Trelease

The Effective Teacher The 4 Stages of Teaching: Fantasy Survival Mastery Impact -Harry K. and Rosemary T. Wong The Wongs assert that all teachers pass through the survival stage, but, ideally, we pass through it as quickly as possible in order to get to the mastery stage, the stage where we actively learn, grow and blossom as teachers. The program is here to help you move past the survival stage to mastery and impact!
The Seven Things Students Wanted to Know on the First Day of School 1. Am I in the right room? 2. Where am I supposed to sit? 3. What are the rules in this classroom? 4. What will I be doing this year? 5. How will I be graded? 6. Who is the teacher as a person? 7. Will you treat me as a human being? (Wong, Harry.(2009).The First Days of School.
The Effective Teacher The EFFECTIVE TEACHER: 1. Is a good Classroom Manager 2. Designs lessons to reach mastery 3. Has Positive Expectations that students will be successful Reference: Good, Thomas L. and Jere Brophy. Looking in Classrooms. Harper-Collins, 1994, pp
Step 1:Creating A Climate For Learning Effective teachers believe that all students can learn and be successful. Effective teachers consciously create a climate in which all students feel included. Effective teachers believe that there is potential in each learner and commit to finding the key that will unlock the potential. Gregory & Chapman. (2007). Differentiated Instructional Strategies: One Size Doesn t Fit All.
Group Work Each group will be given research on why creating a climate for learning is important. Be prepared to discuss with the whole group the impact your research topic has on climate/being an effective teacher: Marzano Glasser Maslow Emotions and Learning Agreements and Norms
Marzano Closely related to teachers behavior is the development of a classroom climate conducive to good thinking students cannot think well in a harsh, threatening situation Teachers can make their classrooms more thoughtful places by demonstrating in their actions that they welcome originality and differences of opinion. Marzano. (1992).Dimensions of Learning.
William Glasser (1990, 1998) The need to survive and reproduce. The need to belong and love. The need to have some power. The need to have freedom. The need to have fun.
Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs (1968) Physiological needs: food, water, air, shelter Safety needs: security, freedom from fear, order Belongingness and love: friends, spouse, children Self-esteem: self-respect, achievement, reputation Self-actualization: becoming what the individual has potential to become
Emotions and Learning Rewards and punishments tend to lessen the chances of self-motivation and an appreciation of learning as its own reward. Five practical alternatives to using rewards are the following: Eliminating threat Creating a strongly positive climate Increasing feedback Setting goals Activating and engaging positive emotions (Jensen, 1998b, p. 68) Downshifting (Caine & Caine, 1997) Relaxed alertness (Kohn, 1993)
Agreements and Norms Use trust Statements (Harmin, 1994) Example: There is no wrong opinion. Example: No put-downs or sarcasm here. Example: Mistakes are learning points. (Chapman & Gregory, 2997) Create truth Signs For Your Classroom Ground Rules / Rules to Live By Classroom Agreements (Gibbs, 1995) Group Norms Essential 55-Ron Clark
Table Talk Which ones will you consider? Are planning to use? Already using? How does this match your teaching philosophy? SHARE!
Mark your Calendars! Check and Connect Session 3: January 16, 2014 Check and Connect Session 4: April 10, 2014 Check and Connect Session 5: May 8, 2014 Make-Up Session: May 15, 2014
Give-a-ways! Slogan Game: Looking for first hand up to identify the candy that corresponds with its correct slogan. EXAMPLE: Melts in your mouth, not in your hand ANSWER: M &M s Makes Mouths Happy Twizzlers Gimme a Break Kit Kat Bar Taste the Rainbow Skittles Get the Sensation York Peppermint Patty How many licks does it take to get to the center of. Tootsie Pop
Reflections/Comments What additional thoughts/ questions do you have about the New Teacher Mentoring and Induction Program? What I am taking away from this session What I still hope to get.
