Purpose: To develop student knowledge about the function of the human heart Materials: Tennis Balls Directions: 1. Have the students take turns doing this activity. 2. Tell them to try to squeeze the tennis ball eighty times in one minute. 3. Discuss the results. Explanation: The force needed to squeeze a tennis ball is similar to the force needed to squeeze the blood out of the heart. Unlike your hand, your heart is unable to rest when it gets tired. Because our heart never stops, we must take good care of it. Some ways to keep our heart healthy are: eating fruits and vegetables, getting a good night s sleep, exercising, and staying tobacco and drug free! Continued on next page. 1

2 Pos-Visit Activity: Heart Obstacle Course Purpose: To learn how the heart and lungs work together in the circulatory system to oxygenate our blood. Materials: folding tumbling mats, tunnels (or large cardboard boxes), hula hoops, hoop holders, traffic cones, floor tape, red and blue bean bags (or poker chips or paper). Set-Up: Place five 4 x8 folding tumbling mats on end in the middle of the gym as shown in the diagram below. Place two hula hoops upright (use hoop holders) as shown in the diagram below (representing valves between the atrias and ventricles). Make two tunnels at one end of the playing area (representing blood vessels leading to the muscles) with a 5 gap in between tunnels. Make two more tunnels at the opposite end of the playing area (representing blood vessels leading to the lungs). Place a blue and red hula-hoop near the gap in between each pair of tunnels. Put plenty of red bean bags (red blood cells) in the red hula-hoop on the side of the lungs and plenty of blue bean bags (red blood cells) in the blue hula-hoop on the side of muscle cells. Directions: 1. Have the first person in line carry a red bean bag following the red arrows (as shown in the diagram through the heart and to the muscle cells. 2. After crawling through the first tunnel, they should drop the red bean bag in the red hula hoop and pick up a blue bean bag from the blue hula hoop. 3. Then, they should follow the blue arrows through the heart and to the lungs. 4. After crawling through the first tunnel, he/she should drop the blue bean bag in the blue hula hoop and pick up a red bean bag from the red hula hoop. 5. After crawling through the second tunnel, they should give the bean bag to the second person in line. Suggestions: If you do not have access to the gym equipment, the activity can be adapted with simple substitutions. BLOOD: The fluid that circulates through out the circulatory system. It transports oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. DEOXYGENATED: Without oxygen. HEART: Muscular organ that pumps blood throughout your body; approximately the size of your fist LUNGS: The blood travels to the lungs to pick up oxygen. OXYGENATED: With oxygen. PULMONARY: Having to do with the lungs. VALVE: One way doorway leading into or out of a chamber. VEINS: Any of the branching muscular-walled vessels that carry blood toward the heart. 5
