4 Unit 3 Meine Freunde
Describing yourself Anna s e-pal, Brigitte, is coming to Australia to visit Anna. They ve never met in person, only through the Internet. Anna is going to pick up Brigitte from the airport, but she s not sure if she will recognise her, so Anna makes a long-distance call to Brigitte. Hairstyles Listen to Track 13 as Brigitte describes her hairstyle. Repeat in the pauses provided. Wie siehst du aus means What do you look like?. Now Anna describes her hairstyle. Part 3 5
Let s practise the new words and expressions. Listen to Track 14 and repeat in the pauses provided. Wie siehst du aus? ich habe (die) Haare (das) Haar kurze Haare lange Haare lockige Haare glatte Haare What do you look like? I have hair hair short hair long hair curly hair straight hair Nouns and gender In German, all nouns have a gender. They are either masculine, feminine or neuter. In both English and German, the word the is used in front of all nouns. 6 Unit 3 Meine Freunde
The definite article A definite article is a word that means the. It refers to a specific noun. In German there are three words for the depending on the gender of the noun: der, die and das. Der is used for masculine nouns. Die is used for feminine nouns. Das is used for neuter nouns. Look back at the Glossar. In front of the word Haar, das appears in brackets. What gender is Haar? The answer is at the bottom of the page. From now on, in the Glossar, we will tell you the gender of a noun by putting der, die or das in front of it. You might be wondering what the difference is between Haar and Haare. Haare is the plural of Haar. It refers to more than one hair. Do you have just one hair on your head? Probably not! You probably have many hairs on your head. This is why the plural, Haare (hairs), is used in German when describing hair colour or style. Makes sense really! Answer: Das is used for neuter nouns, so Haar must be a neuter noun. Part 3 7
Plural nouns In German, the feminine form of the is used with a plural noun. So, we say die Haare. Adjectives Die Haare The words used to describe Anna and Brigitte s hair are called adjectives. Adjectives are used to describe nouns. In German the adjective (long, short, curly, straight) generally comes before the noun (hair) as it does in English. Example Ich habe lange Haare. Activity 1 I have long hair. Fill in the missing adjectives in the speech bubbles below. Check your response by going to the suggested answers section. 8 Unit 3 Meine Freunde
