AP Mentoring Program Open to All AP English Literature and Composition and AP U.S. History Teachers

What is AP Mentoring? AP Mentoring is a teacher-to-teacher support program for AP teachers of all experience levels. Currently, we re offering AP Mentoring to AP English Literature and Composition and AP U.S. History teachers. The program connects teachers interested in enhancing their practice with mentor teachers who have deep knowledge of AP and a record of classroom success. How does AP Mentoring work? The program runs from August 2016 through July Each mentee teacher collaborates with a group of up to three other mentees and one mentor. These groups meet online monthly, completing a total of 12 sessions during the school year, with short assignments between sessions. Sessions take place through a video chat program, and an AP Mentoring platform allows groups to share documents and schedule sessions. Mentees work with their mentors to identify areas of focus. Support may include practice in: à à Designing instructional experiences that help students meet the rigorous expectations of AP Understanding challenging content and skills in AP English Literature and Composition and AP U.S. History Applying best practices in teaching and learning Identifying resources to support content and instruction Persisting through challenges Collaborating with mentors and other mentees on lesson plans and strategies

Benefits to teachers Research shows that recurring forms of professional support aligned with teacher needs and student work, e.g., mentoring, is highly effective in supporting teachers practice. Mentees are active participants. They work with their mentors to analyze their own teaching practice, monitor student performance, and modify instructional practice. Online mentoring gives teachers located anywhere in the country including rural areas personalized feedback throughout the school year that can be immediately applied in the classroom. For full participation (at least 11 out of 12 sessions) in AP Mentoring, teachers will earn 2.2 CEUs. Benefits to schools and districts Mentee teachers can better prepare their students for success on the AP Exam by focusing their teaching practice on difficult concepts and using tools and resources the AP Program provides. Schools and districts can strengthen and/or expand their AP programs by building the capacity of their current AP teachers or supporting the addition of AP English Literature and/or AP U.S. History. Teachers in a district can be assigned to the same mentoring cohort to promote collaboration. I have learned so much from [my mentor]. I m already implementing many of the items we spoke about such as applying historical thinking skills, SQ3R notes, essay writing, focusing on themes and connections, pacing the content, and the list goes on. The AP Mentoring program is proving to be very beneficial to me. I look forward to the future sessions and seeing results. AP U.S. History teacher

How are mentors and mentees matched? Mentee teachers are grouped with other teachers in their subject area who have similar self-identified areas of interest or need. Mentee teachers with 0 2 years of AP teaching experience are grouped together to provide focused support as they build knowledge of the AP Program; likewise, experienced teachers are grouped together to share strategies and best practices. Customized groupings are available upon request. Based upon availability, we aim to match mentee groups with mentors in the same region of the country who have similar meeting time preferences. How much does AP Mentoring cost? Fees cover a full year (12 sessions) of mentoring. Tiered pricing is available to districts, schools, and teachers, as follows: Package Yearly Total Full price $895-10% for College Board members $806-10% for signing up 4 or more teachers from the same district or school -20% for College Board members signing up 4 or more teachers from the same district or school $806 $716 To sign up for AP Mentoring, visit collegeboard.org/apmentoring.

AP Mentoring gives teachers the opportunity to collaborate with experienced peers to enhance their practice and strengthen student performance. Program Timeline Jan. May 2016 May 2016 July 2016 Schools and districts sign agreements with the College Board Mentee teachers receive access to online mentoring platform and use it to specify mentoring preferences Mentees are matched with mentors Aug Mentoring sessions begin Aug July 2017 Mentees engage in 12 mentoring sessions (one per month) Mentees completing at least 11 of 12 mentoring sessions will earn 2.2 continuing education credits. To sign up for AP Mentoring, visit collegeboard.org/apmentoring.
