Bates Middle School Science Research Project and Science Fair November 23 December 3 rd Dear Students and Parents/Guardians, We are pleased to announce the Bates Middle Science Fair for This will begin with a Science Research Project to be completed by every Bates student. Science allows children to challenge their minds and engage in high-level thinking. The research project supports investigation and inquiry in an area of science that interests each student. We expect that you will support your child s participation in this unique learning experience. We will follow the guidelines from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2010 Rules and Guidelines. These may be accessed at Each student or student team (2 or 3 members) is required to obtain a project advisor, prepare a research paper, complete a project display and give a brief oral presentation about the project. Projects will be judged first at the classroom level, then later by grade and by subject matter. The project is due at school the week of November 29 th - December 3 rd (depending on classroom teacher). Selected projects will be displayed from December 8 th -9 th in the media center as a Science Fair. Science Fair projects will be judged by experts and participants will receive a certificate and a ribbon. Each winner will be recognized at a Science Celebration on Wednesday, December 15 th at the Boys and Girls Club in Annapolis. Attached is everything that you need to get started. We have included a timeline students will follow and an entry form. Projects are to be completed by the student at home with only minimal parent or teacher assistance. The first form, the Science Research Project: Teacher Approval Form, must be returned to the classroom teacher on or before October 14 th Once the entry form is approved, a Science Fair Approval Form will be sent home. A Science Fair project can be an excellent learning experience. Thank you for helping us to make this year s Science Fair a success as, together, we inspire future scientists and problem solvers! Sincerely, The Bates Middle School Science Department and Media Center Staff

This may be the first time you have attempted a long-range project. It is very important to make a schedule and stay organized. Science Fair projects often take several weeks to complete. There are many things to do. Here is a suggested schedule that provides enough time to complete all phases of the project: ASSIGNMENT Introduction Visit Media Center with Science Class. Learn what the Science Research Project is, how it works, how to get started, and how to get help! Choose the area of science, engineering, or math that you want to know more about. Research Go to the library or Internet and learn everything that you can about your topic. (See The Secondary Science Fair Resource Guide for Parents, Teachers, and Students. You ll get this from Mrs. Hutchison when your class researches in the media center.) Read and highlight information to learn about your topic. Keep ALL research documentation and the names of any books used (to write a Works Cited/Bibliography page.) Talk to professionals in the field. Organize Develop a purpose for your project. Organize your research. Narrow what you have learned to one idea. Make a timeline. Allow plenty of time to find a sponsor, complete all forms, conduct the experiment, collect data, write the research paper and put together the display board. Create a Project Data Book to hold your information and notes. This may be a folder, binder or spiral notebook. Locate an adult sponsor (parent, teacher, community member, or other adult) that will sign his or her approval help you with your project. Suggested date due (no later than): September 14 th September 24 th September 30 th Check when complete Question/Problem Determine your goal and write down the one idea that you are trying to test. What is the one scientific question that you are trying to answer? Think about WHY or WHAT IF? Identify the variables by determining which parts of the experiment will change and which parts will stay the same. October 7 th

Attention! Form due! Science Research Project: Teacher Approval Form due to Science Teacher by October 14 th. Hypothesis Plan your experiment. Explain how you THINK your experiment will demonstrate its purpose. Make a prediction about the outcome of your experiment. Make and educated guess what the results will be. Write the results that you predict in ways that you can test and measure. Materials List the materials that you need for your project. Write every single thing that you need to use. Collect the materials needed. Ask for help with this part. Ask parents, teachers, neighbors, church members, the Annapolis Boys and Girls Club, the Centro de Ayuda Latino, and others to help you get the materials that you need to have a successful project! Methods/Procedure Set up a control group that follows usual procedures and an experimental group that you use to test your hypothesis. Only one variable may be changed at a time. Conduct the experiment. Repeat the experiment using the exact same procedures at least three times (three trials). Record the data each time in the Project Data Book. (see Data in the next step) Write a detailed explanation of how you conducted the experiment. Write it in steps like a recipe, so that someone else can follow the procedures exactly. Identify the variables (which elements change and do not change). Be specific about how the results are measured. Include a regular timetable for measuring results or observing the projects (every hour, every week, etc.) Science Research Project: Teacher Approval Form due October 14 th October 21 st Tuesday, October 26 th October 28 th

Results/Data In your Project Data Book, record your observations, data, and results. List measurements or written notes about what you hear, see, or touch with your experiment. Use numerical data as well as words. Take detailed notes. Take pictures or make drawings, if appropriate. Display the data by describing the results. Look for patterns in the data. Include dates that data is collected. Create data graphs and charts. Judges love them! Discussion/Analysis Organize your findings. Be sure to include numbers that are statistically valid. Write your observations, data, and results. Summarize what the data shows. List the main points that you learned. Tell why the results occurred and what your experiment proved. Determine if you got the expected results. Conclusions Identify whether the variable(s) tested caused a change when compared to the standard or controlled results. Identify patterns between the variables from the data. Explain why your results did or did not fit with your hypothesis. Determine which variables were and were not important. Look for sources of error and identify any. Explain how you would improve the project if you were to do it again. Tell how this project could be useful in the real world. Research Paper Write/type the Research Paper to display with the project. Put it in a nice folder. Make it very neat. The items that you typed for your display get put together in a paper-like form. Include: Title Page, Table of Contents, Introduction to the project (question/problem, purpose, hypothesis, goals), List of Materials and Methods, Results/Data, Discussion/Analysis, Conclusions, Credit to the people that helped you, and References/Bibliography in MLA style that explain where you learned about the topic or experiment. Project Display You want to attract and inform. Neatly write November 4 th November 12 th November 19 th November 15 th 19 th Complete over thanksgiving

or type the information needed for the project display. Make it colorful and eye-catching. (See Make or buy a Display Board. Arrange the information on the board neatly. Include one section for each of these: Title (a good, catchy title is important),question/problem, Hypothesis, Materials and Methods (include photos here), Results (include graphs and/or charts here), Discussion, Conclusions Organize your Project Data Book for display with the project. Break, be prepared to bring to class week of November 29 th Turn-In Bring your project directly to your science classroom on your designated due dated during the week of Nov 29 th Dec 3 rd. A complete project includes the display board, the Research Project Notebook, and the Research Paper. Classroom Evaluations Present your project for grading during science classes Teachers bring quality projects to the media center as Science Fair projects. Complete ISEF Approval Form for each Science Fair project. Community Judging Judging will take place during the day on Wednesday and December 8 th and December 9 th. Students may be called from classes to present projects to the judges. Awards Ceremony Awards will be presented on Wednesday, December 15 th during our Science Celebration! event, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Take projects home after the event. November 29 th December 3 rd November 29 th December 3 rd December 8 th and 9 th Wednesday, December 15 th
