EARTH DAY CELEBRATION 2014 April 24 th Dear Teachers, Thursday, April 24 th will be our Earth Day/PRIDE Group Celebration for As we gear up for this special day to celebrate our environment we would like for each grade level to participate by creating a special Earth Day craft that will become part of our outdoor environment next Thursday. I have selected crafts that involve simple materials that give back to the environment. If you see a problem with your particular craft though, please let me know. What you will need to do: Solicit the necessary materials from your students and parents most are free, inexpensive, and can be brought form home. If you have trouble with acquiring materials, please let me know. Support staff members read through the attached activities and see what materials you can help donate for each grade level. Choose a day for your class to create your craft PRIOR to our Earth Day celebration. On Earth Day you will have a time to bring your craft outside to add to the outdoor environment but you won t be creating the craft on Earth Day. Send home a parent letter for your grade level (sample attached that you can work from) to invite donations and parents to attend. Gather an Earth Day or environmental book/story or two to read to your PRIDE Group on Earth Day.

For Earth Day, we will also have trash bags and gloves provided for each PRIDE Group to use to help clean up our outdoor environment. Melinda will be scheduling your pick up trash time and assigned area along with your picnic lunch time. Her details will follow. Please see your attached grade level craft below. GRADE K: Cheerio/Fruit Loop Bird Feeder Strings Materials Needed: Cheerios/Fruit Loop cereal (USE GENERIC CHEAP STUFF- IN THE BIG BAGS) Masking tape (to tape the ends of the yarn to make a needle type end for threading through the cereal) Yarn (You can also use pipe cleaners but these are not environmentally friendly the birds can use the yarn for nest building which is why yarn is suggested)

GRADE 1 Pine Cone/Bagel Bird Feeders Materials needed: Stale bagels, bread, English muffins, pine cones Yarn Bird seed Peanut butter or vegetable shortening (if you have peanut alleriges in your class) Continued

GRADE 2 RECYCLED GARDEN MURAL Materials needed: Construction paper Glue and Scissors Recycled food boxed, lids, straws, materials or all sorts For second grade I would like the students to create pictures that can be added to the large concrete outdoor wall done by the front office made entirely from recycled materials you all may choose to do a big mural or small individual pictures the kids can take home. They can show gardens and flowers like the one above or Earth Day pictures.let your imagination and creativity run wild.

Grade 3 Scouring Pad Butterfly Feeders Materials needed: Plant drip pans (I am working on getting these) Yarn Beads Scouring pad (each child will need (1) like the blue one shown above Dollar Tree has them)

Grade 4 Rock Garden Animals Materials needed: Rocks (I have these for you) Acrylic paints (ask for donations) Paintbrushes Spray varnish/sealer (1-2 cans per class should be plenty) Newspaper (to cover work area) Old clothes to paint in SEE BELOW for an additional idea

Finished Rock Path They used the LIM book Only One You for a literature connection and all students did fish rocks hum an idea GRADE 5 Leaf Print Flags

Materials needed: White linen cloth Paint rollers (? Raskin do you have any? ) White rope (have donated?) Fabric paint in blue, green, yellow (have donated) Collect leaves of different shapes and sizes the veinier the better I foresee these banners hanging from some of our many outdoor handrails for the day then brought inside

Please Join Us for Earth Day ~ April 24 th Dear Parent or Guardian, On Thursday, April 24 th, our school will be celebrating Earth Day. From 10:30 to 12:30 we will have a school wide celebration in our vertical PRIDE GROUP families that will include a clean up of our school grounds and a picnic lunch. On this day we will also be beautifying our outdoor environment with earth-friendly crafts that we have made in our homeroom class. We would LOVE to have you join us! Our schedule picnic lunch and clean up time will be on Thursday, April 24 th. If you d like to join us, bring a picnic lunch, a blanket or camp chair and wear some clean up clothes to join in the fun with your child. We are also asking for your help to support our Earth Day craft. We need : THIS IS WHERE YOU WILL NEED TO INSERT YOUR OWN INFO ABOUT MATERIALS AND THE CRAFT. You might even insert the picture from my attachment to you. Sometimes seeing a cute picture will stir their interest to donate more. We hope you will plan to join us for this fun day to celebrate our earth and environment with our children. Sincerely,
