What is a Study Island SoftClicker? A SoftClicker is a Desktop Application that enables students to submit votes to a Study Island classroom response session. A SoftClicker is a virtual clicker. No special hardware is required, because the application can be run on any Mac or PC computer. There are two parts to a Study Island classroom response session. The main part is run by a Teacher or an Admin user by selecting a topic and choosing "Classroom Response System" and then "Study Island SoftClickers". This part is called the "host" because it contains a central application to which all votes are submitted. The second part of Study Island classroom response sessions is the part launched by the Student. A student launches the second part by selecting any topic, and then selecting "SoftClicker" in the drop down, and clicking on the "Launch Study Island SoftClicker" link. This part is called the "client" because it submits votes to the "host" application. Refer to the information below for exact steps to use SoftClickers. Teachers and Admins can use the following link to launch the SoftClicker application that the student sees: Launch SoftClicker. Admins will need to go to the admin page, click 'Allow classroom response system (CRS) integration,' and SoftClickers can be launched on both Windows and Mac computers. In the future, versions for Android and iphone will be available. Browsers will need to have Java 5 or above and Java Webstart. Webstart is bundled with Java 6, and will automatically download on first use with Java 5. Schools will need to have Java 1.5.0_19 or later, or Java question info, then can click the question info to see the actual question and answers. There is a Detailed Teachers can run SoftClicker sessions with their classes or No Owner classes only; admins can run SoftClicker sessions with any class. Select the appropriate grade from the programs area in the left column on the screen. 3. Select the appropriate subject. 4. Select the topic(s) you wish to test. 5. Click 'Start Studying'. 6. In the Session Type drop down, select Classroom Response Systems. From the Session Type boxes, 7. Choose 'Study Island SoftClickers'. 8. Click Next. 9. Select the number of questions. 10. Click 'Next'. 11. Select the appropriate class. 12. Assign pad IDs to the appropriate students. If you do not know the pad ID of your pads, you may leave this blank and use the tool on the next screen to detect the pad ID's. 13. Click 'Next'. It will take a while for the application to load. 14. Select the appropriate mode: Teacher Led or Student Paced.
15. Connection information will be displayed. Connection information consists of a Host Address, a Host Port and a Passkey. This information allows students to securely connect to this unique SoftClicker session. 16. Students will need to enter the connection information into the Connection settings screen on their SoftClicker. 17. Click 'Start Voting'. 18. The students may now begin submitting answers. Use the available buttons to navigate the test and display answers and results. You may stop/restart the poling during the session. For Students: To join a SoftClicker session in Study Island, perform the following steps: 1. Log into Study Island. 2. Select a grade level. 3. Select a subject. 4. Select any topic. 5. Click 'Start Studying'. 6. From the Session Type boxes, 7. In the Session Type drop down, select SoftClicker. 8. Choose 'Launch Study Island SoftClicker'. 9. After the SoftClicker finishes launching, enter user name and password. 10. Login to Study Island. 11. Select the appropriate class. The connection information listed should match the information displayed on the teacher's SoftClicker Host session. If it does not, the information can be updated manually by pushing the Connection button. 12. Click 'Select Class' 13. The voting buttons will now be displayed. To vote, simply click a voting button corresponding to your answer for the question.
Additional Information on Pad IDs There are only two types of clickers that Study Island supports that does not require a special pad ID. The einstruction clickers come labeled in their set, and Study Island will use these pad IDs. The Qwizdom clickers request a login when they connect to the receiver (their host), and Study Island will use these Pad IDs. For all other clicker types, it is recommended to run the Detect Pad ID utility to make sure that the pad IDs that our system sees are the pad IDs that are associated with the student. In Turning Point, this utility is called Config Pad, but it serves the same function. In most cases, the pad ID that Study Island sees is a variation on the MAC address for the clicker. For Turning Point After clicking Config Pads, a Java window will pop up with the students names listed with a corresponding drop-down menu. The teacher will select the student that they want to assign the clicker to. Then, they will click on A to vote. When they click on the drop-down menu, the pad ID for the clicker they just used will be the last entry. The teacher just needs to click on it to select. Once all the students have their IDs entered, pressing Save and close will save these IDs. For all other clickers After clicking Detect Pad IDs, a Java window will pop up with three columns: one for the buttons, one for the assignable pad IDs, and one for the students names.
If you are using Promethean, you will see that the Start Polling button is replaced with two buttons: Start ActiVotes and Start ActivExpressions. The sets cannot be used together, so you will want to pick the button that matches your clicker set. If you are using Smart, and you have classes set up in Smart Response, go ahead and start the class now. When you turn on the clickers, they will request a login. Once you ve logged in on the clicker, you can proceed with the steps below, and it will be just like the student received the same clicker pad each time. Then, click on Start Polling to open the receiver for voting. The button should change from a green Start Polling button to a red Stop Polling button. On the clicker you are assigning to a student, you will make a vote. The vote doesn t matter here, so any button on the clicker will do. In the middle column labeled Assignable Pad IDs, you will see the value that Study Island sees for this clicker. It will vary in length depending on clicker type. If the clicker is already assigned in this class, you will see an entry in History at the bottom, but not in Assignable Pad IDs.
Then, drag the number from the Assignable Pad IDs column to the white box next to the student s name. You will need to repeat the vote process for your entire class, or your entire clicker set. Once this is complete, click on Save and Close to finish the Detect Pad ID process. From here, you can now start your CRS session in Study Island. The pad IDs will save for each class until they are changed. Students can be in more than one class with different pad IDs without affecting their other classes. Teachers can have multiple classes using the same set of clickers without worry that the pad IDs are being used in more than one class.
