1 Clickers Classroom Response System

2 What are Clickers? Clickers are small, calculator-sized, keypads that talk wirelessly to a receiver (that looks like a USB stick or dongle).

3 What are Clickers? Clickers facilitate classroom participation, by allowing the instructor to ask questions (called polling ) during class and enabling students to respond (anonymously or not). Students answer the question on their clicker and the USB dongle collects the data. Once the polling session is closed (the students are done answering), the software displays in real-time the correct answer and the percentage of students who got the answer right or wrong. There are many different varieties of clickers, some use different software, some different hardware, and some use web-enabled phones.

9 Why use Clickers? Based on my personal experiences Students pay closer attention to the lecture when the clickers are out because they know that questions are coming Better than asking questions of the class where no one wants to reply. Instead, nearly everyone replies with the clickers May provide (for good or bad) a veil of anonymity to quiet students who would not otherwise verbally reply. Gives students a sense of which topics you feel are more important. Gives students a sense of your question style.

10 Why use Clickers? Based on my personal experiences Breaks up the lecture. Allows the instructor to assess student mastery of concepts and thus return to concepts that are poorly mastered, based on clicker responses. When connected to a student database, should allow for participation marks to be given. Similarly, should allow for quick/impromptu classroom quizzes.

12 How to use Clickers But my lectures are already set up and this means that I ll have to spend hundreds of hours redoing my lecture slides No! Set-up is easy. Modern textbooks come with clicker test banks on CD or as web downloads. Clicker questions are simply inserted within pre-existing lecture powerpoint slides.

13 How to use Clickers 1. BU currently owns a small Clicker set, purchased jointly by IT, Health Studies, and Education. The Faculty of Education is the custodian of the clickers. Download and install the software: https://www.turningtechnologies.com/responsesystemsupport/downloads You may need to create an account with TurningPoint technologies.

15 How to use Clickers 3. Launch the Turningpoint software and launch PowerPoint from within it. PowerPoint Polling This will add the TurningPoint feature to your PowerPoint toolbar. 4. Load up your presentation. 5. If you are using a Clicker test bank, simply paste-in a Clicker slide. 6. If you want to make your own Clicker slide, under the TurningPoint toolbar, select New and the type of question that you want, say Multiple Choice. 7. Fill-in the question field

22 How to use Clickers 13. Lecture as per usual. 14. When you get to the Clicker slide, let your students answer the clicker question. If it is a timed polling, the polling session will close-itself. If not, you must close the polling session by hitting the forward button. 15. This will close the polling session and display the responses. 16. To re-do the polling session, re-set the slide. 17. After your lecture, you can download statistics on your polling session under the TurningPoint toolbar under Reports. 18.
