Scalable SMP and Processor Shielding In tightly-copled symmetric mltiprocessing systems and mlticore SBCs, RedHawk Linx allows individal CPUs and cores to be shielded from local timers, interrpts, daemons, bottom halves and other Linx tasks. RedHawk s comprehensive processor shielding featres provide a highly deterministic exection environment where interrpt response is garanteed. Unlike other distribtions, RedHawk offers a field-proven, easy-to-se shielding API with both commandline and graphical tool ser interfaces. RedHawk also spports optional PREEMPT_RT schedling for minimizing the latency of large nmbers of threads withot reqiring processor shielding. Mltithreading and Preemption RedHawk Linx allows mltiple processes to execte in the kernel simltaneosly. The kernel protects key data strctres and critical sections of code with semaphores and spinlocks to preserve system integrity. Processes execting in the RedHawk kernel can be preempted, i.e. forced to relinqish a CPU involntarily. The RedHawk kernel can transfer control from a lower-priority process to a higher-priority process except when the lower priority process is execting in a critical kernel section. To provide deterministic response, many critical sections of the kernel have been tned and optimized to dramatically shorten non-preemptable conditions. These changes are key to allowing a high-priority process to respond immediately to an external event, even when the CPU is crrently in se. Semaphores internal to RedHawk Linx also spport priority inheritance to prevent priority inversion when mltiple threads of an application are competing for operating system resorces. The U.S. Navy has selected RedHawk Linx as its Open Architectre Operating System for nmeros programs inclding the Aegis Weapon System, Naval Undersea Warfare Center s next generation torpedo hardware-in-the-loop test bed, the Srface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program, and the U.S. Coast Gard Deep Water Program. Single Kernel Environment RedHawk is a complete Linx distribtion designed to flly spport time-critical applications. RedHawk provides a tre single-kernel programming environment that directly controls all system operation. Complex time-critical applications often reqire that high-speed file I/O, networking and graphics be performed deterministically together with real-time task schedling. Freqency-Based Schedler RedHawk s Freqency-Based Schedler (FBS) is a high-resoltion task schedler that enables the ser to rn processes in cyclical exection patterns. FBS controls the periodic exection of mltiple, coordinated processes tilizing major and minor cycles with overrn detection. 4 Real-Time Clock and Interrpt Modle Spport On Concrrent ihawk real-time mltiprocessors, RedHawk spports the Real-Time Clock & Interrpt Modle (RCIM), a mltifnction card designed for time-critical applications that reqire rapid response to external events. Eight programmable timers and twelve inpt and otpt external interrpt lines are available. Any interrpt sorce can be distribted to other ihawks for synchronizing mlti-system applications. The RCIM incldes a high-resoltion synchronized clock to provide a common time base across mltiple systems. On-the-wire time stamps allow RedHawk to provide for high-resoltion NTP synchronization. RCIM options inclde a GPS modle for synchronizing with GPS standard time and high-stability crystal oscillators to provide for accrate timekeeping withot an external time sorce. I/O Enhancements RedHawk spports Linx ser-level (UIO) device drivers. RedHawk s UIO facility provides a kernel driver stb that can be sed with ser code to develop a ser-space driver for almost any type of hardware. RedHawk also incldes the latest available NVIDIA graphics and GPU drivers specially optimized for real-time performance by Concrrent. The enhanced drivers allow applications to achieve maximm determinism dring image rendering and GPU comptation. RedHawk Architect RedHawk Architect is a powerfl tool with an easy-to-se GUI that lets a developer choose the Linx and application modles to be inclded in RedHawk target images. Designed especially for embedded applications, sers can select as few or as many packages as desired from many different package grops. Architect allows the file system to be cstomized and minimized for diskless operation sing flash as small as 2 GB. Architect s clster manager software allows sers to install and configre systems as highly-integrated, high-performance compting clsters. Architect incldes mechanisms for network PXE installing and also for network PXE diskless booting of mltiple nodes with the same version of RedHawk. Architect creates and processes a configration file defined by the ser to perform actal RPM package installation. The tool prompts the ser to insert the reqired RedHawk, NightStar, and Linx ser land media depending pon the featres selected. RedHawk Architect will allow cstomization of the RedHawk kernel itself and provides a flashing tool for brning RedHawk and the ser s application image onto a CPU board s non-volatile memory, DVD or USB flash. Architect can also bild virtal target images for se with QEMU/KVM. This allows embedded images to be tested withot a physical target system. Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) Optimization The standard Linx NUMA implementation does not offer a mechanism to ensre that pages of a real-time process are local to a given NUMA node and ensre that no other process pages are sing that same node. RedHawk s NUMA optimization featres dramatically improve the determinism of real-time process memory access on NUMA architectres. RedHawk can atomatically dplicate libraries and other modles as needed and hold them simltaneosly in mltiple nodes to maximize performance.
