1 There are two main process involved with setting up a 7586L to operate over a LAN. They are: setting up the LAN interface via the serial interface and checking basic functionality (see page 1, Using the serial interface to set up the LAN interface) setting up the IP information in the 7586L so that it operates within the IP range of your LAN NOTE If you are confident with the use of LAN interfaces and IP addresses, you may enter a suitable IP address in the 7586L instead of testing the system with the default IP address. Using the serial interface to set up the LAN interface The serial interface is used to communicate directly with the 7586L to confirm default settings. The computer is then set up to communicate with the 7586L over its LAN interface. The operation of the LAN interface and basic system functionality is tested before deploying the 7586L into a LAN system. 2 Checking the network settings of the 7586L The network settings of the 7586L include the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway of the 7586L. To check the network settings: 1 Connect the M&C serial cable (Codan part number ) between the computer and the M&C 1 SERIAL connector on the 7586L. 1 Open a terminal session for the serial connection to the 7586L using the following settings: Data rate 9600 Data bits 8 Parity Stop bits 1 Flow control No None 1 Type connect to 7586, then press Enter. The prompt displays 7586>. 1 Type vnd, then press Enter. The network data is displayed Network Data IP Address Subnet Mask Gateway IP Address Record the IP address and subnet mask. If you want to use your own IP address see page 8, Setting up the IP information in the 7586L to operate within your LAN. 1 Save the settings for this terminal session. 1 Switch off the 7586L. 3 Setting up the IP address and subnet mask in the computer NOTE The options that you see depend upon the version of Microsoft Windows that you have installed (Windows XP is described below). For more information on this topic see the on-line help provided for Windows. To set up an IP address and subnet mask in the PC: 1 In Windows, from the Start menu, select Settings Control Panel Network Connections. 1 Double-click on the network that you want to use from the list of available networks under LAN or High-Speed Internet. 1 In the Local Area Connection Status window, click on Properties. 1 Scroll through the listed components used by this connection, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click on Properties. 1 Select Use the following IP address, then enter an IP address that uses the same subnet as the 7586L. For example, to communicate with the default settings of the 7586L, type Enter an appropriate subnet mask. For example, type Click on OK or Close in each window to save the settings and close each window. Checking the IP information of the computer To check the IP information of the computer: 1 From the Start menu, select Run... 1 Type cmd in the Open field, then click on OK. 1 In the Windows command line session type ipconfig, then press Enter. The response should match the IP address and subnet mask entered previously (see page 3, Setting up the IP address and subnet mask in the computer) Issue 1, November 2009 Page 3 of 8

4 Setting up Internet Explorer for a LAN connection To set up the LAN connection of the browser: 1 Open Internet Explorer, then select Tools Internet Options. 1 Select the Connections tab. 1 Click on LAN settings. 1 Set the LAN settings as shown below. 1 Click on Advanced. 1 Set the proxy settings to communicate with the web server of the 7586L, as shown below. 1 Click on OK in each window to save the settings and close each window. 5 Checking LAN communication between the computer and the 7586L To check LAN communication between the computer and the 7586L: 1 Connect the M&C LAN cable (Codan part number xxx) between the computer and the LAN connector on the 7586L. 1 Switch on the 7586L. 1 From the Start menu, select Run... 1 Type cmd in the Open field, then click on OK. 1 Type ping <IP address of the 7586L>. For example, type ping (this is the default IP address of the 7586L). A response that displays a reply from the IP address indicates a successful link with the 7586L. A response that displays that the request timed out indicates that communication with the 7586L at that IP address has failed. 1 If communication between the computer and the 7586L fails, check the following: The LAN LED on the 7586L illuminates when the connection is good. The LAN LED flashes when there is data activity. The M&C LAN cable must be connected between the computer and the LAN connector on the 7586L. Switch off the 7586L. Switch on the 7586L, then ping its IP address again (see page 2, Checking the network settings of the 7586L). The IP address of the computer must be set correctly on the same subnet as the 7586L (see page 3, Setting up the IP address and subnet mask in the computer). The IP address set in the 7586L is the same as the address that you are pinging (see page 2, Checking the network settings of the 7586L). The M&C LAN cable is functioning correctly. NOTE If your computer was manufactured prior to 2000, the network card may not support auto sensing. These network cards may require a crossover cable, or connection via a mini network switch. 6 Connecting to the web server for the 7586L To connect to the web server: 1 Open your browser. 1 Type <IP address of the 7586L> into the URL line, then press Enter. For example, type (this is the default IP address of the 7586L). The login page is displayed. 1 Type netuser in the Username field. 1 Type codan in the Password field. 1 Click on Submit. The Status page for the 7586L is displayed. NOTE This page is refreshed every 30 seconds. Page 6 of Issue 1, November 2009

7 1 Click on the Main Settings, Auxiliary Settings or Faults button to view the corresponding information for the 7586L. 1 Click on the BUC 1 or BUC 2 button to view the parameters of the corresponding BUC. CAUTION The serial RS232 connection used to set up the LAN interface inhibits any changes to the Set commands via the web pages. You must disconnect the M&C serial cable ( ) if you want to make changes to the setup of the 7586L via the web pages. Starting a Telnet session To start a Telnet session on the LAN interface: 1 From the Start menu, select Run... 1 Type telnet <IP address of the 7586L> 6000 in the Open field, then click on OK. For example, type telnet At the Login: prompt type netuser codan, then press Enter. 1 Type connect to 7586, then press Enter. The prompt displays 7586>. 1 Type hlp, then press Enter. A list of help categories is displayed. You can use these commands to drill down for further help for the Set, Output and View commands for the 7586L. For example, type hsc to see the help for the Set commands. 1 If you want to exit the Telnet session, type quit, then press Enter. CAUTION The serial RS232 connection used to set up the LAN interface inhibits any changes to the Set commands via Telnet. 8 Setting up the IP information in the 7586L to operate within your LAN The function of the LAN interface has been tested using a direct connection between the computer and the 7586L. If you intend to monitor and control the 7586L redundancy system via a LAN, you need to reset the IP address in the 7586L to a suitable address within your IP address range. To set up the IP information in the 7586L to operate within your LAN: 1 Connect the M&C serial cable (Codan part number ) between the computer and the M&C 1 SERIAL connector on the 7586L. 1 Connect the M&C LAN cable (Codan part number xxx) between a network point on your LAN and the LAN connector on the 7586L. 1 Connect the computer to the same LAN via a different network point. 1 Open the terminal session for the serial connection to the 7586L. 1 Type sip<suitable IP address for the 7586L>, then press Enter. For example, type sip Type ssm<suitable subnet mask>, then press Enter. For example, type ssm Type sgw<suitable gateway IP address>, then press Enter. For example, type sgw Switch off the 7586L. 1 Set up the IP address and subnet mask for the computer so that it operates within your IP address range (see page 3, Setting up the IP address and subnet mask in the computer). For example, use Set up the LAN connection to bypass the proxy server, for example 203* (see page 4, Setting up Internet Explorer for a LAN connection). 1 Disconnect the M&C serial cable (Codan part number ). 1 Switch on the 7586L. 1 Check the LAN communication using the new IP information (see page 5, Checking LAN communication between the computer and the 7586L). 1 Connect to the web server in the 7586L using its new IP address (see page 6, Connecting to the web server for the 7586L). 1 Start a Telnet session to the 7586L using its new IP address (see page 7, Starting a Telnet session).
