1 Product Guide 2014 Natural nutrition for a long healthy life Developed by Veterinary Surgeon BVMS MRCVS

2 Little Dexter, the latest addition to the Burns family John Burns BVMS MRCVS While I was working as a veterinary surgeon, I often found the drugs prescribed to treat common pet health conditions only suppressed the symptoms and gave short-term relief. I was convinced that there must be a more natural, long-term solution. My research into this eventually led me to the conclusion that many of the pet health conditions I was seeing were brought about as a result of lifestyle especially diet. (You can read more about my experiences of managing health problems with diet in my Veterinary Health & Nutrition Handbook). Having established the link between health and diet, I began advising pet owners to feed their pets a diet of simple home cooked food. This gave remarkable results, with owners seeing dramatic improvements in their pet s health. Although most owners were delighted with the results, many found home cooking to be time consuming and inconvenient. This motivated me to develop my first dry pet food, Burns Original Chicken & Brown Rice, a complete, ready-made diet but with all the benefits of a home cooked diet. That was back in Since then, our product range has grown to include a number of different high quality recipes and ranges for cats, rabbits and small animals. 6 Body Condition in dogs one in three household pets is now overweight PFMA (Pet Food Manufacturers Association) - Underweight Bones (ribs, spine & hips) protruding and can be easily seen in a short coated dog. No body fat visible and waist very obvious. Dog almost looks sucked in after the ribs. In very thin dogs, loss of muscle mass may be evident. Ideal Bones (ribs, spine & hips) should be easily felt. In a short coated dog, the last couple of ribs may be visible when twisting and turning during normal play and exercise. A waist should be visible from above and the side (the body should tuck in after the rib cage). Overweight Dogs are classed as overweight if they weigh 10-20% more than their ideal body weight*. Difficult to feel the ribs due to fat covering. Fat deposits visible over the body including the belly and base of the tail. The waist is starting to disappear minimal abdominal tuck after the ribs when looking from above. Back looks broader. Obese Dogs are classed as obese if they weigh 20% more than their ideal body weight*. Ribs cannot be felt due to heavy covering of fat. Fat deposits visible over the spine and base of the tail. Fat rolls visible around the neck and chest and the belly may be drooping. Waistline has been lost so when you look from above there is no abdominal tuck after the ribs. 7 FEEDING OVERFEEDING There can be many consequences of overfeeding and excessive weight is just one of them. Lots of owners are unaware that there are other signs of overfeeding (even if the dog is lean). Hyperactivity, itchy skin, moulting, digestive upset, tooth tartar, bad breath and full anal glands can all indicate that a dog is eating more than it needs. When overfed, less active dogs tend to put on weight and become obese but even active dogs can suffer from being overfed and tend to discharge the excess as metabolic waste (e.g. tear staining, full anal glands or flaky, itchy skin). Obesity is associated with a shortened life span, disease of the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, rheumatism and arthritis along with a whole host of other diseases. For a diet that is especially good for weight management try our Weight Control+ (See Page 22) Introducing your dog to a new diet Unless otherwise recommended, introduce your dog to a new diet gradually over 14 days. Mix a proportion of the new food with the former diet, gradually altering the proportions until only Burns is being fed. Day 1-4 Day % Day % 75% Burns Diets Day % 50% 100% 25% Current Food CAREFULLY MEASURED Overfeeding can undo the benefits of feeding a high quality food. For the best results, refer to the feeding guide which can be found on all of our bags and on page 8 of this product guide. For your FREE measuring cup call :

35 FEEDING CATS OVERFEEDING International Cat Care (ICC) estimates that as many as 25-30% of cats in the UK are obese. Excess weight can lead to health problems including diabetes, urinary tract conditions and increased joint pain and stiffness. However, there are other consequences of feeding too much. Signs such as excessive moulting (and therefore over-grooming and hair-balls), flaky or itchy skin, digestive upset (loose or strong smelling stools) and a strong smelling urine can indicate your cat is eating too much. MEALTIMES DON T HAVE TO BE BORING Make your cat s mealtimes more interesting by combining feeding time with exercise. Try scattering the dry food in the garden so your cat has to hunt for his lunch, or up some stairs. You could even use a feeding ball to make them work for it. By varying the way you feed your cat, you can help reduce boredom and make mealtimes fun. WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE... If your cat has previously had urinary problems such as cystitis, their water intake should be increased. Burns cat food soaks easily in warm water and can be mashed down with a fork after minutes of soaking. Some cats, especially the elderly may prefer the food this way as well. Warm water is preferable because cats like their food at body temperature. Boiling water is not advised. Introducing your cat to a new diet Unless otherwise recommended, introduce your cat to a new diet gradually over 14 days. Mix a proportion of the new food with the former diet, gradually altering the proportion until only the new diet is being fed.
