Initially, the work involved detail drafting, compiling parts lists, issuing drawings and liaising with the manufacturing department. The role also involved some practical work carrying out tests and demonstrations in the company s test facility. At the time the company was changing from BS1500 to BS5500 as the basis of its pressure vessel designs. During this period I was given responsibility for redrawing the company s standard range of vessels so that they complied with the new code. This involved gaining an understanding of the requirements of BS5500, selecting appropriate materials, compiling new pressure vessel calculations, liaising with the third party inspection organisation, submitting designs and calculations for approval, collating material test certificates, working with the welding engineer to obtain weld procedure approvals and welder qualifications. Following this I also periodically worked on obtaining approval for pressure vessels to other

2 standards including ASME, TUV, AS1210, MITI as well as ABS and Lloyd s Register for vessel intended for shipboard use. During this period I completed the Short Course in Pneumatic Conveying at what was then Thames Polytechnic and later became the Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology. In 1982 I became more involved in the development of new products and in this role I reported to the technical director. The first project of this type that I worked on was to develop a system for injecting granular coal into the tuyeres of a blast furnace. I was responsible for the preparation of general arrangement and detail drawings, the compilation of parts lists, sizing the pressure vessels and screw feeder, designing the electro-pneumatic controls and the specification of instruments. On completion of the prototype I supervised inhouse testing and demonstrated the equipment to British Steel. During the testing pressure drop and flow data were collected to enable the injection pipeline line to be sized. During the installation of the equipment on Queen Mary blast furnace, Scunthorpe I liaised with the project engineer at British Steel. During commissioning and the subsequent trials I was involved day-to-day in setting the system up, resolving any problems and collecting data. During the remainder of my period in this role I carried out a number of similar projects. August 1986 to October 1988 Position: Process Engineer As the company's projects became more complex the process design content increased and this new role was created to which I was appointed. The company had recently been acquired by Simon Engineering and we were working closely with Simon-Carves on a number of projects. With the support of the process department of Simon-Carves I established standards and procedures for preparing P&ID and process flow diagrams, functional design specifications and other process design documents. In this role I worked on a number of projects. Typical of these was a coal preparation and injection plant at British Steel's Ravenscraig Works. I reported to the project manager and provided technical management of the project. This involved preparing system sizing calculations; compiling P&IDs and FDS; presenting and discussing the proposed scheme with the client; liaison with the electrical controls engineers; membership of the plant HAZOP team; overseeing the mechanical design of several new items of equipment; managing the on-site trials of a new design of injection lance; taking a lead role in the plant commissioning and proving trials. October 1988 to March 1998 Position: Process Design Manager As the process design workload increased a small process team was created that I was appointed to manage. This involved recruitment, supervising others, planning and assigning the workload, meeting deadlines and working within budgets. During this ten-year period the team grew from me and one other, to 7 strong. Many of the projects were overseas and ensuring compliance with local standards and codes of practice became an important aspect of my work.

3 During this period I worked on a number of coal handling projects and developed a particular expertise in the safe handling and storage of finely ground coal. I presented several papers on this topic and was a member of British Steel's standing committee on coal injection. At that time the company was pursuing the BS5750 quality standard and I had responsibility for defining the operating procedures and work instruction for my area. In 1990 I completed the Simon Engineering senior management development program. This consisted of 12 modules of 3/5 days delivered over an 18 month period covering presentation skills, financial management, operational management, strategic planning, marketing, negotiating, and problem solving. March 1998 to March 2000 Position: Technical Manager During this period I continued to manage the process engineering team, but was also given a broader technical responsibility on a number of major projects. Typical of these was a project to supply a system for the injection of lignite coal and limestone into a pressurised fluidised bed combustor and the associated systems for ash removal. The combustor was built by ABB Carbon at Cottbus in Germany. I reported to the director of engineering and was responsible for the technical management of the project. In particular, system sizing and development of the overall scheme; process design; overseeing in-house testing to obtain design data; technical discussions and correspondence with ABB during the course of the project; liaison with TUV to ensure compliance with German TRD power industry standards. The novel nature of the equipment also required it was subject to special testing by the IBExU test authority. Towards the end of this period I was appointed to a middle management team that was set up to improve communication and co-ordination within the business. March 2000 to Present: Position: Technical Director In the role of technical director I lead a team of 12 engineers and have day-to-day responsibility for engineering the company's projects. Recent projects have included: Copper concentrate injection into CT type bath smelters at Codelco's, El Teniente and Chuquicamata smelters, Chile; Pulverised coal and oxygen injection into blast furnace tuyeres at JSW 3 and 4, Tarranagalu, India and Dragon Steel, Taiwan; Raw materials feed systems to the Posco/SVAI Finex iron making process at Pohang, Korea. The engineering work on these projects carried out by the team that I manage typically includes: - Compiling process flow and P&ID drawings. - Calculations for system sizing, utility requirements and loadings. - Preparation of general arrangement and layout drawings. - Involvement in the ongoing technical correspondence with the client during the course of a project. - Representing the company on technical matters at meetings.

4 - Detailed design of pressure vessels, specialist materials handling valves, feeders, piping systems, pneumatic controls, hoppers and silos, platforms and support structures. - Developing equipment for new applications. - Compiling Bills of Materials. - Preparation of equipment specifications and involvement in technical discussions with suppliers. - Compiling functional design specifications and logic diagrams to enable the electric controls to be designed. - Involvement in HAZOP and plant safety reviews. - Compiling plant operating and maintenance manuals. - Involvement during commissioning with on-site problem solving, acceptance testing and training. I am also responsible for: - Setting the budget for the engineering team. - Anticipating and planning for the future workload. - Recruitment, induction, training and ongoing development of engineers. - Conducting twice yearly personal development reviews and identifying future training needs. - Conducting regular team briefings. - Monitoring engineering and equipment costs on projects on an ongoing basis. More strategically I am a member of the senior management team and participate in monthly management meetings. I report on engineering matters at board level and work with my fellow directors to develop and implement the ongoing business plan. Initially, when I took up my current position following a restructuring of the company in March 2000 the main priorities were establishing a broader customer base; developing appropriate technologies for niche applications; setting up cost effective supply chains; and, re-establishing the company's ISO 9000 status. More recently, this aspect of my work has included the more strategic aspects of recruitment, training and development of people; product standardisation, value engineering, automating routine engineering tasks; updating and broadening the company's engineering standards; and, providing effective management of what has become a global engineering team. I am currently responsible for the introduction of 3D CAD and the associated document management system into the company. This has involved identifying how 3D CAD will be used within the company and the benefits that it will bring; evaluating and selecting the software package to be used; preparing the budget and raising the CAPEX documentation required for the project to gain authorisation; application for a regional development grant; setting out the method of implementation so that it will not adversely effect workflows. A significant part of my time is also spent on sales related activity. This includes making presentations to customers; assisting the proposals team in selecting the most appropriate technical solution for a particular application; providing technical support to sales; and, presenting technical papers at conferences.

5 Outside the specific business objectives I have also been involved for several years in an initiative in locals schools intended to encourage an interest in engineering.this takes the form of an annual technical challenge to primary school children and involves visiting schools, explaining the challenge, encouraging their efforts and judging the results.
