Letter from the Director Dear Spring 2015 Cohort, Welcome to the HWS Leads certificate program! Leadership is a national topic of interest. While the urgency for leadership has hardly waned, interest in the study of leadership as well as the development of leaders has increased exponentially. With new theory, innovative research and compelling program offerings growing nationwide, the Centennial Center for Leadership is very pleased to serve Hobart and William Smith Colleges as well as the neighboring Geneva Community. We are a dynamic office that offers individuals the chance to study leadership as well as practice it. As our foundational program offering, the HWS Leads certificate program continues to grow and welcome a new cohort of talented students each semester. We are so pleased that you have decided to pursue your leadership work with us. You should expect an exciting semester ahead full of challenge as well as support as you begin the first component of the HWS Leads certificate program, our gateway Reader s College course called Leadership Theory I. Over the semester, I encourage you to open yourself to new learning, different perspectives and opportunities where you can take risks. The cohort model within the HWS Leads program is designed to build community while asking participants to practice critical leadership capacities such as collaboration, communication and completing common goals. The following student guide is meant to serve as your roadmap throughout the certificate program. In addition to having a sense of what the CCL does on campus along with our values as a center, the guide outlines the five certificate requirements. Please maintain a copy of this for your reference and as always consult with one of our CCL staff members if you have any questions. We enjoy visitors at 603 South Main Street! I applaud you for taking these first steps towards furthering yourself as a potential leader and look forward to working with you as you progress within the program. Sincerely, Susan M. Pliner, Ed.D. 3
About us: CCL Our Mission: The Centennial Center for Leadership provides a learning-centered environment, which develops global, community and entrepreneurial leaders who are grounded in the Colleges core values of equity and service. The CCL prepares students, alumnae, alumni, and greater community to lead in the 21st Century. Our Philosophy: We believe leadership encompasses leaders, followers and context. We believe that leadership can be learned. We believe leadership is a relational process where an individual or individuals work with others towards a common goal that benefits a local or global community. We believe that leadership is striving for sustainable change with significant implications. We believe in innovation that adds value and intellectual growth. We believe in value-based leadership. We believe that ethical decision-making should be firmly embedded in leadership practice. We believe in social justice, equity and service. We believe that reflection is at the core of an effective leader. We believe that engaging within and across difference leads to culturally-relevant leadership. We believe leadership is inherently rooted in action. And finally, we believe leadership is a lifelong process of leading self, leading others and leadership in action. Goals: 1. Provide the opportunity to study leadership in a liberal arts context through interdisciplinary lenses. 2. Provide applied leadership learning experiences. 3. Support the development of ethical, value-based, and culturally relevant leaders. 4. Support the development of leadership skills. 5. Support the mission of the Colleges. -- CCL Staff, authored in March
Signature Model Leadership is evolving. Contemporary Leaders are required to navigate tumultous environments where change can be categorized as rapid, discontinous and unpredictable. Today s leaders must adapt, innovate and initiate change. At the CCL, we have made a clear choice not subscribe to one model or static definition of leadership. Rather, we embrace the complexities of leadership and teach a variety of theoretical models and practical applications. Although we have expanded into three areas of emphasis, we are anchored by our interdisciplinary approach to leadership development. 5
1. Leadership Development: Through academic enrichment and applied learning, the CCL signature model is Leading Self, Leading Others and Leadership in Action. We believe that an on-going practice of examining beliefs and values, embracing work within and across differences and aligning passion with thoughtful purpose begets authentic, culturallyrelevant leaders who have the capacity to solve significant challenges. 2. Entrepreneurial Leadership: Entrepreneurs are drivers of innovation and leaders are the primary force behind positive change. Entrepreneurial leadership is the conceptual understanding as well as technical tools that foster innovative solutions in sustainable realworld patterns. 3. Global Leadership: Global leaders are change agents engaged in influencing international communities towards shared visions and common goals. Global leadership emphasizes an understanding of the relationships between leaders, followers and the context of their environments, which are characterized by interdependence, ambiguity and steady flux. 4. Community Leadership: Community leaders serve first and are driven by a desire for positive social change in their local environments. Community leadership is based on the values of equity, service and social justice and characterized by work that includes cultivating partners, harnessing collective assets and addressing community-identified needs. 6
List of CCL Programs Leadership Institute Leadership Institute (LI) is a two-and-a-half day professional conference experience that builds leadership potential and allows students to explore leadership on multiple levels: the self, with others and through action. LI provides students their choice of over 30 different concurrent sessions as well as reflective home group meetings that build community and assist students with the development of an individual action plan. LI is held a few days prior to the spring semester and coincides with MLK Jr. Day. In addition to HWS students and local Geneva High student, attendees include students from neighboring colleges and universities. The Pitch A student entrepreneurial contest that supports the broad spectrum of entrepreneurship, The Pitch is designed to provide a rigorous applied learning experience in entrepreneurial leadership. Students are asked to describe an idea for a product, service or organization. Semi-finalists are matched with an entrepreneurial mentor. Finalists are invited to give a pitch before a panel of entrepreneurial judges. The winner is awarded up to $10,000 to bring their idea to reality. Leadership Cafés Designed to be unrehearsed and uncensored, the Leadership Café features a different leader who is asked to chronicle the personal challenges, professional dilemmas and various life experiences that have shaped their leadership path and perspective. Dedicated to the continuous development of leadership opportunities for students, one student leader is selected to interview the featured Café leader around a compelling topic. Conversations are casual but compelling. Leader-in-Residence Each year, a leader is invited to campus to share their perspective, expertise and experiences with the campus and surrounding community. Generally a multi-day visit, past Leaders-in-Residence have come from a variety of fields and focus on a compelling leadership topic that has linkage to the CCL s yearlong theme. Leaders facilitate workshops, provide lectures and generate dynamic classroom discussions during their stay. Student Advisory Board As the CCL continues to grow, student voice is critical to our planning, mission and efforts to impact campus and the surrounding community. The Student Advisory Board (SAB) provides input for strategic planning, selects applicants for the HWS Leads program and helps craft studentcentered programming. SAB members represent all Hobart and William Smith class years and belong to a wide variety of clubs, organizations and campus groups. Fellowships Each year, the Centennial Center for Leadership offers financial support to innovative student leaders in the form of fellowships. With awards for the Cohen Fellowship for up to $1500, the CCL invites proposals from current HWS students who can craft thoughtful projects that allow them to develop their leadership identity and engage in practical experiences with significant implications. Given the nature of funds, project proposals should be substantial, focused, thoughtfully developed and illustrate an intention for leading lives of consequence. 7
HWS Leads Certificate Program The HWS Leads Leadership Certificate Program is designed to purposefully guide students in the study of leadership as well as offers the opportunity to develop as a leader through academic enrichment and applied learning. Throughout the program, students will reflect upon themselves as leaders (Leading Self), the complexities of leading a group of diverse others (Leading Others) and the effects of situational, organizational and cultural contexts (Leadership in Action). This program provides the foundation for students to embark upon, or continue, their journey of developing into ethical, inclusive and value-based leaders. HWS Leads Certificate Requirements: 1. HWS Leads: Leadership Theory I Reader s College (formerly HWS Leads: Minds Wide Open) is the gateway course into the certificate program. By providing an overview of contemporary leadership theories, this course deepens students understanding of leadership and balances academic enrichment with engaged learning. Students enter in a cohort by way of the Leadership Theory I course and complete a cohort project together. Students also start an individual portfolio that chronicles their growth, perspectives, values, experiences and personal leadership understanding. Students will add to their portfolio throughout each of the certificate requirements and be expected to submit a copy of their completed portfolio. 2. HWS Leads: Public Speaking Reader s College introduces students to the basics of public speaking and presentation techniques, an essential leadership skill. Topics covered include: critiquing a speech, analyzing an audience, exploring a topic, arranging a speech, the use of language and the performance of speech through the voice and body. This course provides a practical opportunity for students to become a better public speaker while framing techniques for ethical, inclusive, value-driven leaders who are poised to articulate their views. 3. HWS Leads: Leadership Theory II Reader s College is an advanced leadership theory course that focuses on the conceptual understanding and technical skills necessary for global leadership, community leadership and entrepreneurial leadership. This course demonstrates the capacity to which these concepts overlap and apply to the work of contemporary leaders who must navigate the public, private and non-profit sectors. This course will provide an in-depth examination of various leadership theories and prepare students to apply innovative problem-solving concepts and techniques in both local and global contexts. 4. Leadership Practicum is designed to be the certificate s most applied experience. Students can construct a general practicum or a practicum that 8
specializes in global, community, or entrepreneurial leadership. Prior to enrolling in the practicum, students will meet with a CCL staff member and provide a description of their project as well as their practicum goals for the semester. Practicum students will be expected to gather twice throughout the semester to discuss challenges, breakthroughs and experience and at the end of the semester present their action plan. Students are encouraged to take on projects with significant responsibility, unique opportunity and practical learning experiences. 5. Leadership Portfolio spans work derived from all three Reader s College courses and the practicum. A mainstay of the certificate program is self-reflection. Students are asked to document their growth and experience as well as complete assignments designed to assess learning outcomes. Portfolios must be submitted prior to completion of the certificate. HWS Leads Learning Outcomes Each semester the CCL engages is important assessment using a series of learning outcomes, which are designed to gauge student learning and development over the course of the certificate program. The following are currently the learning outcomes used for the HWS Leads certificate program: A. Knowledge of theoretical and foundational concepts of leadership B. Develop a set of core values & belief systems C. Develop one s own definition of leadership D. Develop a practice self-reflection E. Develop skills for innovative problem-solving F. Develop skills for ethical decision-making G. Develop cultural and intercultural competencies H. Develop techniques for communicating effectively I. Develop capacity to critically analyze leaders and leadership J. Develop and execute implementation models K. Develop capacity to apply theoretical concepts L. Gain knowledge of a conceptual framework for community, global and entrepreneurial leadership M. Gain practical techniques for entrepreneurial, global and community leadership N. Develop the ability to critically analyze global and community issues 9
Practicum Requirements The leadership practicum is designed to be the certificate s most applied experience. Students can construct a general practicum or a practicum that specializes in global, community, or entrepreneurial leadership. Students are asked to develop a project in a local or global community. Students must submit a proposal including the requirements below. Proposal Requirements: - Problem statement [Explain the problem you are trying to address.] - Project description [Describe your project] - Implementation [Include a description of your implementation process and timeline] - Goals [Define the goals of your project] - Leadership role [Include a description of your role] - Evaluation [Develop a process for evaluating your project and yourself as a leader] Since the practicum represents the culmination of the certificate program, students are strongly encouraged to include some of the leadership theories and styles learned in Leadership Theory I and II. Practicum students will be expected to gather once throughout the semester to learn about the e-portfolio process and discuss challenges, breakthroughs and experiences. At the end of the semester, students will be expected to present their projects at the certificate ceremony. Students are encouraged to develop projects with significant responsibility, unique opportunity and practical learning experiences. Practicum Specializations Students can complete a general practicum or they can elect to complete a practicum that specializes in one of CCL s targeted leadership areas: global, community or entrepreneurial leadership. During Leadership Theory II, students will be exposed to the conceptual components as well as the core technical skills that are required of global, community or entrepreneurial leaders. It is strongly recommended that students take the Leadership Theory II Reader s College prior their practicum if they wish to specialize in an area. For a specialization, students are asked to complete all regular practicum requirements along with an additional digital storytelling assignment. Digital storytelling asks students to document a learning experience using visuals only. Using photos, graphic images, video or other visual mediums, students must story their practicum experience, their leadership role and describe their understanding of as well as one critical issue relevant to the work of global, entrepreneurial or community leadership as though explaining to an audience who is unfamiliar with the concept. 10
Portfolio Overview/Instructions Leadership Portfolio spans work derived from all three Reader s College courses and the practicum. A mainstay of the certificate program is self-reflection. The portfolio is a place for students to compile their certificate work, reflect on their process and articulate important learning milestones. A completed portfolio is simply an organized storyboard, uniquely designed by each student, showcasing their most prominent reflections, experiences and understandings around leadership. Portfolios are designed to be a professional presentation of a student s leadership work during the certificate program as well as throughout their time at HWS. In order to complete the certificate program, students must submit their portfolio to CCL staff for review. Students will also be instructed on how to utilize their portfolio for graduate school applications, job interviews or a variety of other professional opportunities. In addition to capturing students leadership work, the portfolio will function as a catalyst for students to transition towards their professional image as well as their personal brand. Your portfolio will take form of a webpage that will highlight your achievements as well as deepen a viewer s understanding of your leadership potential. Although you can (should!) expand your portflio to include a variety of tabs you must provide several specific tabs in order to complete your practicum. You might use text but also include plenty of images. Creativity is encouraged but also keep in mind your design choices should match the professionalism of your portfolio. Please see the instructions and guidelines below. Guidelines: Setting up your Porfolio The CCL reccomends that you use the website builder Wix to construct your portfolio.
