Find the lowest common denominator Write each denominator as a product of prime numbers. Let s work the problem from the left to the right items in rows. C ROWS O L U M N S Show / 6 using a SET MODEL Starting in the upper left column. Begin with / 6. Circle of the 6 columns. Starting in the upper left column. Begin with. Circle of the rows. Count the number of dots captured within BOTH of the circles. This is your numerator. Count the number of dots within the entire grid of circles. This is your denominator.. Draw a rectangle with the shorter side towards the top of the page. Multiply using an AREA DIAGRAM. Label the longer side of the rectangle on its left side with the fraction having the larger denominator.. Label the shorter side of the rectangle at the top with the fraction having the smaller denominator.

Working with the fraction on the left side, divide the rectangle horizontally into the number of rows equal to the denominator. 6. Choose a color and circle the numerator of the fraction on the left side of the rectangle. Beginning in the upper left hand corner of the rectangle, shade the same number of rows as is the value of the numerator you circled.. Working with the fraction on the top, divide the rectangle vertically into the number of columns equal to the denominator. 8. Choose a color and circle the numerator of the fraction on the top side of the rectangle. Beginning in the upper left hand corner of the rectangle, shade the same number of columns as is the value of the numerator you circled. 9. Count the total number of cells into which the rectangle has been divided. 0. Multiply the denominators of the fractions together.. Are these two values the same? yes This is your denominator.
