1 Young Adulthood Change, Loss, & Grief: A More Mindful Approach for Helping Adolescents and Young Adults Jolynn K. Gardner, Ph.D., CHES National Wellness Conference, July 2012 A time of significant change and transition Age of Majority High School to College Dependence to Independence Change in Living Conditions Search for Purpose and Meaning (Smith & Renk, 2007; Ross et al., 1999) Young Adulthood Uneasy Transitions Each of these changes can bring excitement, happiness, hope, and significant stress. Most young adults cope effectively. Not all young adults cope in a healthy manner. Increasing concerns on college campuses: Mental health issues (Hunt & Eisenberg, 2010; Eisenberg et al., 2009) Reports of self-injury (Gollust, et al., 2008) Post-traumatic stress Complicated grief syndrome (Schnider, et al, 2007) Academic challenges (Smith & Renk, 2007) We often counsel young people to better manage their stress. This may be insufficient. A Shift in Perspective All change involves some aspect of loss. Loss usually evokes grief. Acknowledge inevitability of change, loss, and grief. Move from stress management to coping with loss. Teach students to cope effectively and live with change, ambiguity, and even grief. 2 Stages of Grief Lindemann s findings: Somatic / physical distress Preoccupation with loss Feelings of guilt Hostile reactions Loss of patterns of conduct Conclusion: Grief is a state of abnormality Incorrect application of Kubler-Ross research on stages of dying. Denial Isolation / Anger Bargaining Depression Acceptance Popularly held conceptions, but never verified in research or fully supported by Kubler-Ross. Grief is OK, but only for a while. Something to get over or work through. Stage-based expectations. Time frames to be followed. A strong will can help us move on. Grief should be rational, linear, solvable. Any variation from stages or timelines is a concern. Questions to consider: Is this view rational and practical? Is this view helpful or harmful? Does this view foster hope or anxiety? Most grief is a healthy, normal, and appropriate reaction to loss. -- Charles Corr, 2012 Application to Adolescents and Young Adults Moving from a stress management approach to a more mindful approach that emphasizes coping with change, loss, and grief will better equip young adults to navigate the myriad of transitions they typically experience. 2

3 A New Approach The Case for Mindfulness Rationale: We can best help young adults by acknowledging the inevitability of change, loss, and grief and then teaching them to live with these experiences in a purposeful and healthy manner. Research has shown that mindful approaches have been effective in helping college students: Increase feelings of forgiveness (Oman, et al., 2008) Manage negative emotions (Neely, et al., 2009) An even more comprehensive approach could yield further benefits. A Reframing of Grief -- Boss, 2006 Life isn t always fair; change and loss can t necessarily be avoided. With attachments in life, grief associated with loss is inevitable, but devastation is not. Learning to live with change and loss can help enhance the meaning of people s lives. Grief should not be avoided or denied; it can help people grow. A Reframing of Grief Remembrance, rather than closure, is the key; closure is not always possible. It is better to live with grief, rather than try to escape it. Grief cannot always be solved. One doesn t have to get over it. It is possible to both keep a loss present and move forward. Every experience of grief is unique and meaningful. A New Approach to Grief A New Approach to Grief Coping, not solving, is the key. Recognize that each person is capable of adapting. Resiliency can be learned and cultivated. Emotional attachments should be maintained by remembering, honoring, and incorporating. Expect & anticipate ambivalence and emotional oscillation. If necessary, reconstruct identity accept the changes. Discover hope. Move to a more positive view. Learn to live with grief & loss; give up on closure. Embrace life as it is. 4 Application to Adolescents and Young Adults Young adulthood is a time of change. All change involves some loss; all loss involves some grief. Acknowledging this grief, and helping students recognize it, cope with it, and adjust to change could be immensely beneficial - especially for mental health. A More Mindful Approach: Coping with Change & Loss Change is inevitable. Some change is unwelcome and even unfair. At times, change can invoke great feelings of loss and grief. This grief should be recognized, acknowledged, and validated. Even good change can be difficult. Dealing with Change & Loss Incorporate it and the feelings which accompany it into our lives. Learning to live with change & loss can help enhance the meaning of one s life. While change cannot be avoided, neither can the accompanying feelings of loss; acknowledge them. Let change and loss help one grow. Remembrance, rather than closure, is the key. Acknowledge that all change is hard, but we are capable of adapting. Choose to focus on the best aspects of change. Celebrate (rather than mourn) the past and help it direct the future. Live in the present, while incorporating inspiration from the past and hope for the future. Discovering Hope There is no right way to cope with change and loss; each case is unique. Virtually all young adults are capable of cultivating resiliency but some may need more guidance than others. Encourage young adults to accept help and advice from others. Grief associated with change is not linear; emotional oscillation should be anticipated and welcomed. If necessary, reconstruct identity add to it, but do not subtract. Recognize and accept that change has provided opportunities for enhancement. Gradually shift the focus from loss and grief to remembrance, acceptance, and positive anticipation. Incorporate where you ve come from into where you re going and embrace life. Discover hope. 4

5 Discovering Hope Final Thoughts The emphasis of this approach is to enable young adults to embrace life as it is - focusing on what has changed, what can change, and what needs to be remembered and honored throughout the journey. It is only when young adults incorporate the lessons they ve learned from change, loss, and grief that they are able to move forward to meaningful and purposeful lives. Society often does not support them in these endeavors; thus, the responsibility of providing support falls to those of us who understand. References References 1. Bonanno, George (2009).
