Course Goals: This course examines the interaction between information and methods of communication technology. It explores the impact that technology has on individuals and organizations and the effects of current technology infrastructure plus use, duplication, and transmission of information in our world. The course links technology with communication to provide consumers with access to a wealth of data

Students will exhibit proficiency with software applications and demonstrate knowledge of computer technology and components to aide in their understanding of data and information. This course is designed to assist in the transition to college-level work and academic expectations, orient new students to the services and culture of the University, and engage them in SIUE s intellectual community of students and faculty. In this course, you will: Expand your awareness of computing fundamentals (hardware, software, the Internet, information security, digital media, e-commerce, artificial intelligence) and computer-related social issues (intellectual property rights, digital life, freedom of speech, privacy, ethics, and globalization). Demonstrate proficiency with software applications. Prepare to achieve your academic goals. Practice effective study skills and habits. Tests will be administered through Blackboard on the dates listed on your course schedule. You may take the exam only once and there will be 50 minute time limit on the test. When you complete a test, it is YOUR responsibility to make sure that the grade is posted in Blackboard. If it is not there, contact me immediately! 3

4 Course Activities (continued): Self-Quizzes: These are features of the online text. Completing these quizzes can help you determine if you understand the topics. You may see some of the questions again on the concepts & issues tests! Computer Concepts Quizzes: Questions will be taken from assigned readings, topic slides (which may cover material not in the text), and Discussion Board postings. Questions will tend to be multiple choice, true/false, or matching. While the points possible for each quiz may vary, the total possible points will equal 100 for the semester. Assignments: You are required to complete ten (10) assignments taken from exercises we will discuss throughout the course. This is an opportunity for you to practice your computer skills and demonstrate your synthesis of knowledge gained! Detailed instructions, formatting requirements, and grading rubrics are provided in Blackboard. Skills Training: You will log into SAM 2010 simulation environment for skills training, which can be completed as many times as you want. There are no points earned for completing skills training; however, the training shows you how to complete tasks on the skills exams. Skills Assessment: You will log into the SAM 2010 simulation environment for skills exams in four areas: Microsoft Windows 7, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. All skills exams are due by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, December 2. You must schedule your time to complete these activities! To successfully complete a skills exam, you must score at least 70%. Points will be assigned based on your highest score (e.g., less than 70% = 0 points, 75% = 7.5 points, 90% = 9 points). There are two ways to level-up : Complete all 11 skills exams for extra points. You will have 5 attempts to improve your score on each skills exam. If you have trouble with completing tasks in an exam, you should review the related skills training (above). Discussion Questions: Discussions will relate to topics presented in your e-book (Emerge with Computers). You will use the Discussion Board in Blackboard, and I will provide links in your weekly folders for each of five (5) rounds of discussions. For each discussion topic, you must choose one question, from multiple options, to present additional information or your relevant experience to help everyone in the course better understand the topic. Do not forget to properly cite your sources! In 4

Grade Disputes: If you believe there is a discrepancy with any score, you must notify me within one week of grade assignment so we can resolve the issue.
