They took an array of wood craft materials with them to make dens and have some fun out in the fresh air. As soon as the children arrived in the clearing they set to work building a special den using branches, twigs, camouflage netting and string. Once the den was in place they gathered under the shelter to play pretend camp fires and cooking, by gathering together leaves, small twigs, cones and seeds to create a wonderful feast. 2 We can make a tripod for a cauldron Let s cook! Let s fish Once the den was built the children could get involved in some other woodland activities. They found three long branches and tied them together to make a tripod stand. Cutting the string carefully using the scissors they secured the branches together at the top with the string. Then they hung a pot over the pretend fire to start cooking Hedgehog and Leaf soup..it was delicious. The children loved the river but were careful when playing by the river bank, pretending to fish with long branches and twigs. Some of the children made special twig boats and raced then down the stream to see which boat floated the fastest- everyone cheered as they sailed out of sight. Using paper and crayons other children made some special bark and stone rubbings to take back to nursery. To everyone's surprise two of the children found a small forest frog finding by the den. Barbara carefully picked it up so all the boys and girls could see if before placing it carefully by the river bank to find it s way home. Finally, the children gathered around the BBQ for a well earned hotdog and a drink. What a great day! This hotdog is delicious!

3 During Police Week this month the Butterflies were treated to a special visit from PC Sarah. She came to talk to the children about the police and explained how they took care of all the people in Cumbria. She showed the children her uniform and explained how her special yellow jacket keeps her safe. She talked in to her radio to check that there were no burglars about and then she arrested Laura and put her in handcuffs because she had been naughty! PC Sarah said the Our Laughing Policemen boys and girls had been so good she wondered if they would like to go outside and see the police van parked by the nursery front door. Everyone shouted Yes Please! in a very loud voice and rushed to put their coats on. PC Sarah showed them what it was like inside a police van and also let them climb in the back to see where the burglars if they have been naughty. After the visit the children made their own Burglar Bill masks and police helmets then played Cops and Robbers. Butterflies Police Investigation It s a Fair Cop! Strawberry How Garden Party Friday 17th July pm Everyone is welcome. There will be lots of exciting activities set up around the nursery and parents are invited to accompany their child as they take part. There will be a bouncy castle, face painting and prizes. Refreshment will include; tea, coffee, juice and scones with cream and jam. Cake donations would be warmly welcomed.

4 Look, this moves This is great fun Another Special Bag Day in the Caterpillar Room Due to popular demand the Caterpillar children had another opportunity to have lots of fun with bags. It is amazing how much fun they can get from a suitcase, a sparkly clutch bag and a shopping bag but they do. The boys and girls are very versatile, finding many different ways to make use of the bags. 1.They hold them and carry them around 2.They hold the handle and pull them along on their wheels 3.They explore the catches and the fasteners inside to see how they work and how to open and close them. But best of all they get really excited just sitting in the bags and suitcases, especially if your friend can join you! Who thought bags were just used for putting things in.. Now how does this work? News Update: There are more adventures to come for the Giant Butterflies. Throughout the summer a number of trips have been arranged for the children aged 3-4 years. Tuesday 16th/Wednesday 17th June Low Stanger Farm Tuesday 7th July The Lake District Wildlife Park Monday 27th July Crummock Forest Walk Monday 10th August Maryport Aquarium and Mawbray A letter giving further details about each trip will be send to parents prior to each visit together with the permission slip. Here comes the summer.

5 The children in the Butterfly Room have been learning all about France - they learnt some French words and some French songs. The children painted their own French flags, which we hung up in nursery. They made their very own wine using their feet to squash the grapes to get all the juices out. The children helped to make their own French baguettes, they weighed, mixed, poured and scooped the ingredients and when they were cooked they enjoyed them for snack with some French cheese. We also held our own Tour De France bike competition in the playground, the children picked their mode of transport and had to go over the ramp, round the corners and in between tyres to get to the finish line. We then held an awards ceremony and had a big party to celebrate. Throughout May the children in the Caterpillar Room have been very musical. They started by singing and learning nursery rhymes with Makaton signs then they moved on to create their own music. We hope parents like the musical videos posted on the nursery Face Book page. The boys and girls had a wonderful time investigating the real instruments and they found that the instruments had their own individual sounds that they could change by blowing, plucking and banging. They got to see how to take care of the instruments when Emily demonstrated how to clean and put away the clarinet in to a special case.
