1 The Chinese University of Hong Kong Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages 3rdTerm Course code & title: SPANISH LANGUAGE: INTERMEDIATE SPAN3050 A,B,C Language of instruction: Spanish /English Units: 6 Course description: This is the third and the fourth of a 6 term language course and it aims at providing training in spoken and written Spanish, oral practice through class interaction and essential grammatical structures. It goes one step deeper into the introduction of the Spanish speaking countries society and culture. Prerequisite: SPAN 1001 or equivalent competence. Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, students should: 1. have reviewed the previously studied grammar points and expanded the Spanish morphology and syntax and reviewed and fixed already learnt basic grammar patterns. 2. have mastered the Spanish sounds and confidently pronounce them 3. have acquired a core active vocabulary of Spanish of over 700 words 4. be able to interactively communicate in a wide number of social situations with the appropriate awareness of the pragmatic rules involved be able to write compositions in Spanish using past, present and future tense in different registers and styles Course Content: The course will cover 6 lessons (Nos vemos 1 3 chapters / Nos vemos 2 3 chapters ) Chapter Speech acts Grammar and vocabulary (NOS VEMOS 1) (I am walking) Talking about travels. Talking about clothes. Talking about weather Planning Asking others about their plans. Verbs: Reflexive verbs / Continuous Interrogative pronouns : Adjective: Gender, number and agreement. Comparations (NOS VEMOS 1) (I have some plans) Talking about free time Making plans Talking about restaurants. Describing causes SABER / PODER Preposition + pronouns. You are required to attend at least 75% of the class. Treat 75% attendance as the minimum, not the maximum. The success of your own learning will highly depend on your attendance. Should you miss more than 25% of the class, you will automatically fail the course. If you are unable to attend, get informed about what content and homework you missed and make it up yourself. ii

Students are very welcome to provide comments and feedback on the course any time to their course teacher or the course level coordinator through or in personal conversation. In addition, students feedbacks will be collected in the middle of the term through an open end questionnaire and the teacher will discuss the feedbacks in class and make improvements if necessary. The course will also follow the university s course evaluation exercise at the end of the term, and students feedbacks will be used for future course planning and teaching.
