1 SESSION 13 (2 days) Cornell Note Taking Study Techniques What Do I Wish to Accomplish in this Session? Teach Cornell Note Taking skill Share study strategies to help students be more effective when doing homework and/or preparing for tests Continue Vocabulary Development What Materials Are Needed? Attention Grabber Cartoons: Day One Day Two Paper for students for both days Copies of Cornell Note Taking System (INSERT 13 A) and Common Note Taking Symbols & Abbreviations (INSERT 13 B) for students Forever Files YouTube videos on Cornell Note Taking (suggest both are shown just over 10 minutes view time): Great website that helps you print off paper already pre designed for use with Cornell Note Taking Copy of Making the Most of My Study Time (INSERT 13 C) for teacher to use during class discussion Vocabulary List

2 Discussion and Details Cornell Note Taking/Day One Open class discussion about Attention Grabber Cartoon, Day One, and how there is no avoiding going to school Explain the importance of Cornell Note Taking and how it will benefit students now and in all future classes all the way through college. Hand out blank sheet of paper, as well as copies of both the Cornell Note Taking System (INSERT 13 A) and Common Note Taking Symbols & Abbreviations sheets (INSERT 13 B). Watch first short YouTube video have students just simply listen: Discuss the Common Note Taking Symbols & Abbreviations sheet (INSERT 13 B). Have students jot down some of their own in the blank spaces provided. Remind them that there are universal symbols/abbreviations, but also those personal to them. It is important that they only use symbols they know the students will run into trouble if they refer back to their notes and don t know what the symbols mean! Now show the more detailed YouTube video (a little over nine minutes), stopping after important parts so students can draw on their sheet and mock what she is doing: Once done with the YouTube video, answer questions students may have about this strategy. The best learning tool is to try it themselves in one of their core courses. Challenge students to try this note taking strategy the next few days in their core courses. Offer a reward incentive if they bring the notes to class the next day and show you what they have accomplished. Share this great website you can print off paper already pre designed for use with Cornell Note Taking Continue with Vocabulary Development: CUE

3 Discussion and Details Study Strategies/Day Two Open class discussion about the Attention Grabber Cartoon, Day Two, and how today s lesson is about study strategies and retention of information. Revisit the importance of Cornell Note Taking give the students a blank sheet and then challenge them to set it up for Cornell Note Taking. Today the topic is Making the Most of My Study Time. (Remind them to fill in the top with their name, date, class and topic.) As you discuss the different study strategies, have students take notes in the notes column. Remind them to use abbreviations and symbols when they can. Read/Discuss Making the Most of My Study Time (INSERT 13 C) while students take notes about the suggestions. Use the discussion bullet points to guide you through a group discussion. If possible, as you go along, have the whiteboard on and show an example of things they can be jotting down. EX. Put the word WHERE in the Cue Column and then, in the right column, jot down where you study the best. As you go along, survey the students to see if they are using symbols and abbreviations common for them. Open up discussion by asking students what their personal strategies are they may have unique ideas that will help fellow students. Now have students write a quick summary of their notes taken. Conclude with the NO REGRETS TIME idea. Inspire students to take on the challenge of conquering procrastination once and for all! Continue with Vocabulary Development: REDUCE, REGRET SPECIAL NOTE: ONCE THIS SESSON IS COMPLETED, IT S A GREAT TIME FOR A COMPUTER LAB or TECH DAY! Have students bring study material/notes/charts, etc. to class and spend the hour on Qwizzy s World or Cram Stoppers creating quiz questions from their material. This will teach them the practical side of studying as they enter the site, they are once again reviewing the material and can then take their quiz as many times as needed to prepare for upcoming pop quizzes or tests.

4 Class Name: Study Skills Topic: CORNELL NOTE TAKING SYSTEM NAME: John Doe DATE: 2/4/2013 (INSERT 13 A) CUE COLUMN (Main Ideas, Vocabulary Words, Important People or Dates, Key Points, Questions) NOTE TAKING AREA RECORD: Record meaningful facts, define words, draw pictures of important events. REDUCE: As soon as the class lecture or your reading is done, formulate questions based on the notes you have recorded. List vocabulary words you have defined and write the Main Ideas next to concepts and facts you have listed. RECITE: Cover the note taking column with your hand or a sheet of paper. Then, looking at the Cue words/questions in the Cue Column, say aloud the answers you are studying! REFLECT: Now reflect on the material by asking yourself questions like: What is the significance of these facts? How can apply them? How do they relate to me or fit in with things I already know? REVIEW: Spend time reviewing all your previous notes to prepare for upcoming pop quizzes and tests. These notes are also great to use in combination with Qwizzy s World or Cram Stoppers. Prepare quiz questions from your material and experience the POWER of being PREPARED! SUMMARIZE: For each page, sum up the notes you ve taken in a few sentences. To do this, it may help to pretend that you ve been asked to describe this page of information to a friend give them the GIST of what you ve learned.

5 COMMON NOTE TAKING SYMBOLS & ABBREVIATIONS! (INSERT 13 B) Just like when you text someone on your phone, using symbols and abbreviations can help you to write down information more quickly when taking notes. These are some common ones used, but you too can develop your own, especially if there are certain words or concepts that often come up in class. 6 (INSERT 13 C, 3 pages) Making the Most of My Study Time Here s Where I Study Dedicate a place to study maybe in a favorite chair, good space, good table or desk, nice lighting and environment. Discussion: Why is this important? Will it change each day? Avoid texting, it can take time away from studying. You might possibly utilize your cellphone to study with friends via Face Time/Speaker Phone, use the calculator, or look up information in the internet. Discussion: Why would you want your phone by you? What could be the downside to studying like this? Share with family members/friends that you will be studying and don t want to be interrupted. Discussion: Why will this be helpful? Some students like to study with music in the background just be sure it is not a distraction. Discussion: How can it be helpful why a distraction for some? Get Organized Analyze the material you need to study...making a checklist of everything that needs to be accomplished. Do you need to re read material? Do you need to write a paper? Do you need to create a quiz from your notes? Do you have three subjects to cover or just one? Discussion: How do you get organized? How do you analyze what you have to accomplish? Create an easy way for you to store items you may need when studying. For example, you may put items in a basket like a bottle of water, a snack, pens, pencils, stapler, tape, ruler, three hole punch, calculator, and extra paper. Then the basket can simply move to wherever you are studying. Study Schedule Set a reasonable time for studying, being sure to take breaks depending on the intensity of the material. Set time limits for each of your checklist items. Also keep your energy level in mind when you can best pay attention! Discussion: Will this change? What other factors may influence when you study?

7 Incentives Be kind to yourself and create an incentive for meeting your study goal for that day. Maybe it s having a food treat, or playing with friends, maybe watching TV, etc. Discussion: What are personal incentives you might use? What might you use for bigger projects, like essay papers or long book reports. Continue to Maximize your Energy Level You are the only one who knows your level of energy. Do you tire of studying after 15 minutes and need to stretch? Is it break time after 30 minutes 60 minutes? What is your style? Discussion: What do you find helps you to stay focused and on task? Do you know if you are better studying at night or in the morning? Use mnemonic devices and acronyms to remember information A mnemonic is something intended to assist the memory. You may associate a term you need to remember with a common item you are familiar with. Maybe you use a rhyme, a song, or a joke to help you recall. An acronym is a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase. Using this technique is great when trying to remember lists of things or names you need to memorize EX. The Great Lakes Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior HOMES! Be Here Now! This is probably the most effective strategy when you start drifting, say to yourself: Be Here NOW! Getting your studying accomplished is your task stay on it! Discussion: What other things can you tell yourself to help to remain focused? Is this a strategy you can see yourself using? Visualize Be the best you can be VISUALIZE when you were at your BEST! Where were you? Who were you with? What were you doing? Put yourself back in that place and succeed recapture that moment when you felt your best and now study with that mentality! Discussion: Do you recall the last time you felt you were at your very best? Now re capture that moment and snap shot it mentally for future use!

8 Store It! What do you do with your paperwork, notes, pictures, or school work when you are done with it, but want to keep it? How about storing it in one safe place for future reference? Idea: Take a storage box, maybe an art box or creative arts box, then paint it or color it creatively with your name, school attending, and years of class ( 12 13). You can even paint a picture if there is room. Now store everything that comes home in that box. In years to come, you can reflect on not only the work in the box, but the artwork on the top! It s fun to compare your years and see how your artwork progresses! Share it Research suggests that reading materials out loud significantly improves your memory of the material. It has also been discovered that students who teach concepts to one another enhances their understanding and recall. So share your study information with a friend, parent, or study partner. No Regrets Time! Once a week (or more often if needed), take an hour or two to confront your procrastinated study item(s). Is it a project that you have failed to start? Maybe a book you need to finish? Maybe your room needs a quick cleaning so you can find the paper you re missing for Science class? During No Regrets Time, no one, including yourself, can get mad about what you haven t done. During this time, work toward starting and hopefully finishing your procrastinated items be sure you reward yourself with something special when completed! Get your family involved in this too just in case they too have things they have procrastinated about if possible, help each other out and accomplish your goals together!

9 VOCABULARY WORDS SESSION 13 cue a hint; prompt; guiding suggestion Sentence: The teacher gave the studenst a cue, which helped them remember the defintion of the vocabulary word. reduce to bring down to a smaller extent, size, amount, etc Sentence: We were asked to reduce our notes to only a two line summary. regret a feeling of sorrow or remorse for an act, fault, disappointment Sentence: We were told not to regret being late for class, since our tardiness was due to the fire drill.
