1 Location Tax Year Greathouses (names in column headers are identified below table; numbers in boxes refer to tax list references below chart) John Artz John Sr Heidelberg Twp, Berks County, PA * Shenandoah County, VA ,4, ,4 4 4 John Wm. Sam John Jr David Harm Will Chas Dan Fayette County, VA (later KY) Fayette County, KY Jessamine County, KY Henderson County, KY * In the 1767 Heidelberg Twp, Berks County, PA, Vivian Taylor considers this entry to be probable but not proven for John Sr. Greathouse Names in Table Columns: John Artz John Artz married Elizabeth Greathouse, daughter of Henry and Ann Greathouse John Sr - John Greathouse Sr (abt 1746 to 1816), married Elizabeth John John Greathouse (abt 1737 to 1840), married Catharina Elissen Haack - Note: "Vivian Taylor believes that John the husband of Catharina was born about 1756 in PA and died in 1834 in Wabash Co., IL; that he was the son of John (abt ), the youngest son of Henry and Ann; and that John (abt
2 1834) was called "Junior" or "the Younger" when he was in the same county (especially Shenandoah and Fayette) with John "Senior" (abt ). This reference to John as Jr did not mean that he was the son of John Sr, but merely that he was younger than John Sr." Wm.- William Greathouse (abt 1760 to 1819), married Mary Ann Livingston Sam Samuel Greathouse This may be the Samuel who first appeared in Baltimore records and was a brother to David (husband of Pensilla) and Elizabeth (who married William Hays in Warren County). David, Samuel, and Elizabeth were probably the children of Eva Ann Greathouse [apparently a widow], who married James Majors, Sr., in Baltimore. [Eva's first husband is unknown at this time; he may have been a son of Christian.] John Jr John Greathouse Jr (1777 to 1840), son of John Greathouse Sr and Elizabeth David David Greathouse (abt 1782 to 1827), son of John Greathouse Sr. and Elizabeth, married Sarah Callender Harm Harmon Greathouse (abt 1784 to 1831), son of John Greathouse Sr and Elizabeth, married Elizabeth Masoner Will William Greathouse (abt 1786 to 1845), son of John Greathouse Sr and Elizabeth, married Nancy Gibson Chas Charles Adams, married Polly Greathouse (abt 1792 to 1820), daughter of John Greathouse Sr and Elizabeth. Dan Daniel Greathouse (abt 1773 to 1820), son of John Greathouse Sr and Elizabeth Tax Lists and References Contributed by Louise Johnson and Vivian Taylor 1. Tax List of Berks County, Pennsylvania, (Reprinted from the Pennsylvania Archives, Third Series, Vol. XVIII.) Transcribed by F. Edward Wright. Bowie, Maryland: Willow Bend Books, Page 33, Heidelberg Township: John Artz, with 100 acres, 4 horses, 6 cattle, 6 sheep, and tax of 21 [shillings]. Page 37, Heidelberg Township, Single Man [21 or over]: John Grotheiser; tax of 15 shillings. [PA Archives, page 53.] Comments by Vivian M. Taylor: John Artz married Elizabeth Greathouse [daughter of Henry and Ann Greathouse] on January 5, 1748, in Christ Church at Philadelphia. [Pennsylvania Marriages Prior to 1810, Vol. 1, page 104.] The Artz family is well documented for several generations by Daniel W. Bly in From the Rhine to the Shenandoah, Volume Two (Baltimore, Maryland: Gateway Press, Inc., 1996). The biography of Johannes (John) Artz is given on pages 10 and 11. John and Elizabeth Artz sold their land in Heidelberg Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, on May 17, 1771 [Berks County Deed Book 6, pages and ]. "By the early 1770s John Artz and his family had moved to Virginia and were settled near the Shenandoah River east of Woodstock. The first record of John "Ortz" in Shenandoah County is a suit against him to collect a debt owed Jacob Miller in November 1772 (Shen. Co. Order Book #1, p. 91)." Since neither John Grotheiser/Greathouse nor John and Elizabeth Artz are listed in Berks County after 1771 but all three appear in Shenandoah County records after that, it is reasonable to assume that they migrated to Shenandoah County, Virginia, about Personal Property Tax List of 1782, Shenandoah County, Virginia.
