3 CHINGAY 2016 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMME COVER STORY LSBF Singapore was proud to be part of 2016 Chingay Community Engagement Programme (CEP) on 19 th February Students and staff drew beautiful illustrations and penned words of support on specially designed bulb-shaped sky lanterns to reflect on the core values and legacy of Singapore s founding Prime Minister, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. More than 8,000 lanterns illuminated the sky during the Chingay programme, which attracted about 160,000 spectators. The sky lanterns symbolise the community efforts, and the Singapore spirit of we are one as a united Singapore working together as one people towards a better and brighter SG100 in

4 Student Council EDITOR S NOTE LSBF Singapore established its very own Student Council in January The Student Council commenced with only twelve members, and within a short period, saw an increase of six new members. The Council is an amalgamation of students of different nationalities, all working toward the welfare of the student body. The member came from the various school with LSBF. The Student Council is an important body in the school as it encourages and supports student participation and involvement. Apart from organizing events in the school, council members are tasked to take on leadership roles and learn skills to deal with peers through interaction and effective communication. They also learn how to perform to their maximum capability by taking on multiple responsibilities. Five different clubs have come together and worked in unison to form the council. These are the Communication & Publicity Club, the Sports Club, the Go Green Club, the Alumni Club and the Photography Club. 5 CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION EVENTS The Chinese New Year celebration was held in grand style at Springleaf Tower on 26 th January The event was celebrated with students unveiling their talents to uplift the spirit of the Chinese New Year. The harmonious celebrations included songs, dances and games. Students from various countries like China, Korea and Singapore shared their experiences on how Chinese New Year was celebrated in their respective countries. This gave all the other students an insight into different cultures and traditions. The students also marked the event with an interesting performance by a group of students singing a famous Chinese song. This was accompanied by an interesting Ribbon Dance performance and by a student from the Chinese Bilingual School showcasing her keyboardplaying talent. There was also a nice buffet spread. All in all, it was a joyous celebration. 4

6 LOVE IS IN THE AIR LSBF Singapore celebrated Valentine s Day in an ecological style this year. The Go Green and Photography clubs collaborated to put up a Valentine theme suited to the special occasion. A Valentine photo booth was created using reused and recycled items to create an eco-love ambience. The Photography Club took the opportunity to organize a Best Valentine Photo contest. This involved students and staff posing at the photo booth, and using the props provided, submitting their best photos as entries for the photo contest. There were attractive prizes to be won. A special dedication board was put up for students to pen and express romantic thoughts and messages for Valentine s Day. 5

7 INSIDE TRACK Study Group Too bored to study alone? Members of the Student Council gather at Springleaf Tower for a study session every Wednesday. The study session is open to all students! Join Us! For more information, contact Ms Zuleha at COUNCIL & CLUBS RECRUITMENT DRIVE The LSBF Student Council regularly scouts for new blood from new batch of students who join LSBF. As part of this approach, members of the Student Committee together with the Council President set aside a day during which they conduct interviews with interested students. Questions such as their strengths and weakness, culture adaption, time management, etc are usually asked of the interested students. 8 CAREER CARE & GUIDANCE STAY POSITIVE It is important to keep one s spirits up while searching for a job. Maintaining a positive and motivated outlook can have an impact on the job pursuit. What can one do to stay positive? Remember to feel good about yourself No one has control over your emotions except you. Empower your thoughts with positive affirmation and let it radiate through your being. Believe in your abilities Everyone has their own strengths and abilities. Think of all your achievements and your abilities, and believe that you will be able to leverage on them to the fullest. Do not take rejections personally Your attitude depends on how you perceive things around you. You can see the job search as a personal attack to your abilities or you can see it as an opportunity to grow and learn more about yourself. Stop worrying about the future Worrying is a habit. However, it is a habit you can change. Focus on your hopes and dreams rather than on your fear. This will keep you going. Keep growing Continue to keep growing your skills and knowledge while looking for a job. Attitude is contagious Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. Walk away from nay sayers or emotional vampires. Do not let them drain you of your positive energy. Keep a smile on your face Life is beautiful and you are still alive and kicking. Every day is a new chapter and you should be happy that you are able to fight any challenge that comes your way. 7

9 CAREER CARE & GUIDANCE Career planning is the basis of a successful professional career. Once you pass the fun-filled high school phase and reach college phase, preparations and career planning should ideally start. Having a plan is important. It encompasses setting internal personal goals, identifying appropriate steps to achieve these goals and a visualization of possible outcomes on achieving the goals. A plan will keep you motivated and will make you strive to work toward the vision and to achieve those goals. Here are some tips: Set your foundation for future opportunity and explore ways for you to get there. Adjust your plan accordingly. Not everything we do in life is smooth at all times, and we should expect challenges and twists and turns along our pathway. These, if taken positively, will provide opportunities to learn and to gain valuable experience that will help us to shape future goals. Research potential careers and ascertain which will best fit you, taking into account factors such as type of work, working timings, level of pay, career advancement, working condition, etc. Do keep these tips in mind when considering any decisions on your career. 8

10 CAREER CARE & GUIDANCE UNDERSTANDING TAXES IN ASIA On 29 th February 2016, LSBF Singapore hosted a career workshop on indirect taxes in partnership with award-winning global tax services firm Ryan Tax Services. The directors of Ryan Tax Services, Mr Wei Han Tan and Ms Mabel Ong, explained the recent tax developments and the challenges that practitioners face in the industry. Many students said they were impressed with their insights. Well done to all, and thank you to the Student Services team for organising this event. 9

11 CLUBS UPDATES Sports Club SPORTS CLUB ORGANISE THEIR FIRST CRICKET MATCH The Sports Club organized their first cricket match on 12 th April 2016 and held it at the Singapore India Association grounds. The cricket match attracted participation from Indian and Sri Lankan students. The breath-taking match lasted for 4 hours and ended in a draw. There was also an award for player of the series. The students were truly glad and thrilled that the school had organized such an event. The Sports Club will be planning more such exciting events that will help to strengthen the bond and camaraderie amongst students. 10

12 Photography Club CLUBS UPDATES SELFIE WITH MONKEY It is the year of the monkey according to the Chinese lunar calendar. The Photography Club decided to launch a contest based on the concept of the monkey. The contest was open for two weeks during the Chinese festive season. Students were asked to take a selfie in which a live monkey has to be seen. This would bring about a festive essence to the contest and a festive atmosphere at the Photography Club. Winners of the competition received gift vouchers to celebrate the festive season. (WINNER: IXTIYOROV KOMRON, Diploma in International Hospitality Management) 11

13 CLUBS UPDATES Go Green Club Did you know that LSBF was awarded one of the most prestigious awards of a lifetime? Yes, indeed! LSBF won an award for going green. In August 2015, members of the Go Green Club attended a School Green Awards workshop organized by the Singapore Environmental Council. They were briefed on the Singapore s approach to national environmental education, Singapore s clean and green movements and water conservation in Singapore. In love with Mother Nature? Want to go green? While Mother Nature has given us a lot, ever wonder what we have given in return? It is our duty to secure the planet for our future generations to live in. 14 Alumni Club CLUBS UPDATES OLD IS GOLD! The Alumni Club is a newly formed club led by Daly, a student council member. Daly is armed with the experience of heading various committees. He has graduated with a Higher Diploma in International Business (Chinese), and is ready to lead the Alumni Club with his fellow colleagues who have graduated from the Preparatory Course for ACCA Education & Diploma in Business Studies. The saying If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then you are a leader describes Daly in a nutshell. The Alumni Club will be meeting quarterly and will organize events for graduates in the coming months. 13

This is a dynamic and fun club that consists of students from different parts of the world. A very good diversity can be seen in this club. The social media platform is completely maintained by this club. The marketing tool of all clubs is social media. Everyday, members of the club crack their heads to put up a post on Facebook and Instagram for each of the clubs.
