CONTENTS 1. Internet Access Can Voice channel of DECLoop be used for it? 2. Efficiency of DECLoop in providing access to the Internet. 3. Freedom of Choice to end user - Can a DECLoop user choose out of multiple ISPs? Volume 1, No. 1, Summer 2006 This issue concerns the Internet access part of the DECLoop WLL system. Many users wonder if incase of absence of an ISP working with the Service providers, could they connect a normal modem to the phone line to access the internet, would they get a good speed and do they have an option of choosing the best ISP? Interactions with the Operators and end users brought up certain questions. These 3 articles below provide an introduction to these topics BBS Access Pte. Ltd.
2006-Volume 1 Page 1 Internet Access In this issue we deal with the Internet access and highlight the capabilities of DECLoop WLL and the advantages it offers over fixed wired network and other WLL products. Here are some typical questions and answers to those questions: Question 1: Can the voice channel of DECLoop be used for Internet access? Yes. DECLoop WLL behaves exactly the same as a normal wired telephone line which means you can connect your computer through a normal modem to the RJ11 port of your subscriber unit. The rest is the same as a normal dial-up operation. The connection is shown in the diagram below. Connection through Voice channel DECLoop Subscriber unit Dial-up modem Figure 1 Although we specify speed of 9.6 kbps through the voice channel, in practice most subscribers achieve over 16 kbps using this way of Internet connection. The limitation is due to ADPCM coding of the voice channel ADPCM coding is used by DECLoop WLL to give crystal clear voice quality (as good as a very good cable). There are techniques we can use to momentarily disable ADPCM coding during internet access which in theory should increase the speed to around 30kbps but since DECLoop WLL provides a much more efficient way of connecting to Internet through a dedicated data port, our customers prefer using the data port of the subscriber unit. Some DECT equipment suppliers combine two voice channels to achieve higher speed, however this technique leads to unnecessary blocking of the voice channels. This is exactly the same problem observed on the normal wired networks where dial-up internet users occupy telephone lines for long periods of time. Operators in particular must note that their access networks are designed with average Erlang of me and having subscribers holding to lines for long periods of time will cause an excessive blocking rate. DECLoop WLL can improve the efficiency of their network in a manner that other systems cannot. I will describe this in the next section. So no matter what type of DECLoop terminal you have, you can still get connected to the Internet ENJOY SURFING.
2006-Volume 1 Page 2 Question2: Why is DECLoop WLL more efficient in providing Internet Access? Voice & Internet data are essentially different types of signals. Internet data comes in bursts or packets where as voice is a continuous signal. In other words although you are connected to the Internet for a long time, the length of time you are actually down-loading (receiving) or uploading (sending) data is very short so there is no need for you to be connected to the network (occupying a telephone line) when there is no activity. Figure 2 shows what happens in a normal dialup situation for wired network or wireless networks simply using voice channels for data. Periods of activity Internet Activity Periods of inactivity Channel occupation For wired network Or a WLL using voice channels for data Connected Channel is engaged for the entire period Nobody else can use this channel Figure 2 disconnected As it is seen, with a normal dialup (wired network or a wireless network using voice channels only), a voice channel could be blocked by an Internet user for hours although his/her real internet activity requires minutes. In the case of a wireless system using two voice channels for higher internet speed, both channels would be occupied and could not be used by others. DECLoop WLL has overcome this problem by separating voice and data channel. In this case you use either RS232 terminal or Ethernet (for new versions) terminal of your subscriber unit for your internet access (see Figure 3) as a dedicated terminal for Internet access. This has three immediate advantages: 1. You can still use your telephone or fax while connected to Internet. (simultaneously voice & data) 2. There is no need for a modem. Your subscriber unit behaves the same as an ADSL modem. 3. High Internet speed at sustained rate of 64 kbps (never drops) Connection through data channel RJ11 Telephone / Fax DECLoop Subscriber unit Connection through data channel RS232 or RJ45 Figure 3
2006-Volume 1 Page 3 However, the advantages of DECLoop WLL over other systems is more than this. DECLoop WLL deploys an intelligent internet traffic handling software called Always On Internet (or AOI), which maximizes use of channels. Looking at Figure 4 below, DECLoopWLL monitors Internet activities and when it identifies a prolonged period of Internet inactivity (e.g. you have downloaded a document and are reading it so you are not sending or receiving data), it frees the channels for other users. Here is the clever bit: the person who was connected to the Internet does not notice this and when he/she is ready to send or receive more data, another channel is given to him so quickly that he/she feels the connection has always been on! Wireless systems designed for mobility don t find it easy to offer the same solution due to longer delays in signalling. Periods of activity Internet Activity Channel Usage Efficiency with DECLoop WLL Connected Periods of inactivity Disconnected Channels free for use by other Internet or voice users Figure 4 Question 3: Could subscribers be given choice of ISPs? Yes With DECLoop WLL, it is possible to connect the Internet part of the system to several ISPs. This will allow competition amongst ISPs and would allow subscribers to select their Internet Service Provider. Figure 5 shows how the system can be configured for multiple ISP operation. Each ISP needs its own RAD/NAT set up and can perform its own billing. In this case subscribers can choose to subscribe to any of the 5 ISPs.
2006-Volume 1 Page 4 RAD / NAT ISP 1 ISP 2 ISP 3 ISP 4 ISP 1 Subscriber ISP 5 ISP Infrastructure Ethernet Switch RAS Telco s WLL infrastructure Figure 5 ISP 5 Subscriber Telecom companies selecting DECLoop WLL for Internet access would gain several advantages. These include: Complete control over the traffic management of their network (control of Internet data flow as well as voice). Telco s can design their network based on both voice & data usage of their subscribers. Efficient traffic management of data (see Always on Internet Feature). Additional revenue by getting into the vast Internet market. Through this model ISPs & Telcos can form a win-win business relationship.
