1 RE UNIT OF WORK - FOUNDATION STAGE/TERM 1 WE ARE SPECIAL AREAS OF LEARNING SUGGESTED CONTENT AND ACTIVITY IDEAS RESOURCES/ACTIVITIES Begin to know about their own cultures and beliefs and those of other Beginnings in school Link this with starting school and all the new things which children have come across. Christians believe that Jesus was special and have written down what he did in the Bible. Introduce the idea of Jesus family. Look back to Christmas. Explain that birthdays are a time to remember our birth as a baby each year. Tell the story of the Last Supper Jesus wanted to have a special meal with his friends / told them to remember him. They shared food together. Share some special food, eg chocolate biscuits/ fruit explain that special food (bread and wine) was shared by Jesus. When Christian go to church they have bread and wine to remember the meal Jesus shared with his friends. The library, the park, the leisure centre, the theatre, a museum. Talk about the purpose of each place the kinds of things you d find there and why. Special Places of religion: The Temple/ Synagogue When Jesus was 12 he was taken to Jerusalem by his parents. They visited the Temple, the most important place of worship for Jewish at the time. Jesus called it My Father s House Read story in the Bible about Jesus in the temple. Introduce idea that Jewish today go the synagogue their special place to find out about God and worship. Use books to show what a synagogue is like on the outside and inside. Special Places: The Church Talk about Church being a special place for Christian. Have any children visited a church before / do any children go to church? Use books and posters to show children what a church is like on the outside and inside. Begin to think about some of the symbols that seen in church and why? Eg. the font for christenings, the cross reminds Christians to think about Jesus, the lectern and the Bible. Think about the sun and stars and other sources of light. When do pupils light candles at home? What sort of occasions are these? You may light a candle for a thinking time at school or explore light through dance. They are lit for the Hindu festival of Divali to light the way for the goddess Lakshmi to come and bless the home. The story of Rama and Sita is the basis of the Divali celebrations. Make Diva Lamps from clay. Shabbat Candles/Hanukkah Candles are lit as Shabbat begins. The candlesticks may be precious, eg silver and a gift. A blessing (special prayer) is said as the candles are lit. The Hanukah is a reminder of a time when there was only oil for one more day for the temple light, but by a miracle the oil lasted for eight days Baptism Candle When a baby is baptised in church a candle is given.
