Luke 4:14-44 Jesus Taught and Healed

Have you ever gone back to your hometown and it was not the same. Maybe you went to college and then got a job in the big city

Nazareth was Jesus hometown. A short time before, Jesus had gone to John the Baptist and was baptized. Then he went into the wilderness for 40 days. Then he preached in Capernaum and he was coming home. They remember him in the synagogue, it was his custom to be there.

I. Jesus Ministry Statement Vss

Jesus reads the passage from Isaiah and then sits down That is what the teachers did after they read, they sat down and taught. Jesus gives a very short teaching time Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing Jesus just told them that he was the Messiah, but what kind of Messiah? 1. Preach good news to the poor 2. Proclaim freedom for prisoners 3. Give sight to the blind 4. Release the oppressed 5. To proclaim the year the Lord s favor 6. This was a preaching, teaching, healing, releasing Messiah

Jesus just gave his ministry statement, this is what I will be doing Most people were thinking that the Messiah would be more like King David, a conquering Messiah. That was not Jesus I don t know what the people were thinking But they seemed to like Jesus at this point They spoke well of him, remembering that he was Joseph s son

But Jesus had a few more things to say Physician heal yourself This was a saying, it had the idea of take care of those who are closest to you, your family and friends. Do here what you did in Capernaum They had heard that Jesus had done miracles in that town And the hometown people of Jesus wanted to see some miracles But really, at the center of this was unbelief or a cynical attitude But Jesus was not a performer He wasn t some magician that put on a show for people

Jesus said something else that really made them mad Elijah was the greatest prophet of the Old Testament Elisha was Elijah s disciple Both of these prophets ministered during a time when the Israelites were a bad bunch of people. They worshipped idols and turned their backs on God. And God sent these 2 prophets to Gentiles Jesus was saying, that he wasn t going to minister in his hometown No, he would go where people would listen to him

They became a mob and hated him so badly that they wanted to kill Jesus. They pushed him out of town to a place where there was a cliff. They wanted to kill him because he compared them to sinners. But Jesus walked right through the crowd

II. Jesus Power over the Spiritual World Vss

Capernaum was a small town on the sea of Galilee It was considered Jesus center of ministry 11 of Jesus disciples were from the area Judas the betrayer was not from there Jesus was teaching in the synagogue and the people were amazed at his teaching, but then a disturbance came to the synagogue It was during Jesus teaching that the man screamed at Jesus

Jesus coming to the earth was confronting the enemy-satan Have you come to destroy us? Meaning all the demons Jesus came to the earth as the Savior of mankind, saving people from going to hell and offering people a place in God s family. That was defeating and destroying Satan and his demons Satan had a kingdom of people on his side, those who didn t follow Jesus. Satan would be losing people to God s kingdom The demon knew who Jesus was-the holy one of God But Jesus was not having a conversation with the enemy Jesus would free this man who was in bondage to a demon And with a few words, the authority of Jesus freed this man

III. Jesus Healed the Sick Vss

Peter-Simon probably invited Jesus to his home for a meal Simon s mother in law was sick with a high fever She was in bed all day and maybe for a long time Jesus rebuked the fever, fever leave her! And she was healed instantly. One good deed deserves another, word of the healing spread through town and people started to bring sick people to Simon s home. And it sounds like it wasn t just a few people, but many people. People were lined up to be healed Jesus went to each person, put his hands on them and healed them

The next morning, Jesus goes out early to a quiet place He goes out to pray and talk to God the Father He needed a quiet time after all that ministry the day before He also needed a time to refocus, what do I need to do? The people find him and they want him to stay, they had a great healer and teacher. But Jesus knows that he must preach the good news to others That message of salvation that all can have a relationship with God through the Son.

Luke 4:14-44 Jesus Taught and Healed Have you ever gone back to your hometown and it was not the same Maybe you went to college and then got a job in the big city You are on vacation and you want it to be the same, but things change And people change especially Nazareth was Jesus hometown. A short time before, Jesus had gone to John the Baptist and was baptized. Then he went into the wilderness for 40 days. Then he preached in Capernaum and he was coming home. They remember him in the synagogue, it was his custom to be there I. Jesus Ministry Statement Vss Jesus reads the passage from Isaiah and then sits down That is what the teachers did after they read, they sat down and taught Jesus gives a very short teaching time Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing Jesus just told them that he was the Messiah, but what kind of Messiah? Preach good news to the poor Proclaim freedom for prisoners Give sight to the blind Release the oppressed To proclaim the year the Lord s favor This was a preaching, teaching, healing, releasing Messiah Jesus never released anyone from prison But spiritually Jesus did this for people People who were in bondage to sin or people who were in bondage to an evil spirit. Jesus was releasing people wherever he went. Jesus just gave his ministry statement, this is what I will be doing Most people were thinking that the Messiah would be more like King David, a conquering Messiah. That was not Jesus I don t know what the people were thinking But they seemed to like Jesus at this point They spoke well of him, remembering that he was Joseph s son And if the day had ended there, it would have been a great day Jesus would have had a good meal after the meeting with the mayor of Nazareth, people would have stopped by and said hi People would have been talking, he will make a great teacher People will remember Nazareth because of Jesus Some background to Satan and Demons. Satan was an angel in heaven He was a high ranking angel, but he wanted to be #1 in heaven But Jesus had a few more things to say Physician heal yourself This was a saying, it had the idea of take care of those who are closest to you, your family and friends Do here what you did in Capernaum They had heard that Jesus had done miracles in that town And the hometown people of Jesus wanted to see some miracles But really, at the center of this was unbelief or a cynical attitude But Jesus was not a performer He wasn t some magician that puts on a show for people Jesus wasn t going to do all his miracles in Nazareth to please them His miracles had purpose and they helped people Jesus said something else that really made them mad Elijah was the greatest prophet of the Old Testament Elisha was Elijah s disciple Both of these prophets ministered during a time when the Israelites were a bad bunch of people. They worshipped idols and turned their backs on God. And God sent these 2 prophets to Gentiles Jesus was saying, that he wasn t going to minister in his hometown No, he would go where people would listen to him The group of people that had minutes before spoke well of Jesus were furious, they ALL hated Jesus for comparing them to that sinful generation And saying that God favored Gentiles over Jews They became a mob and hated him so badly that they wanted to kill Jesus They pushed him out of town to a place where there was a cliff They wanted to kill him because he compared them to sinners But Jesus walked right through the crowd The mob of people could have easily pushed Jesus over the cliff But Jesus used his power as God to walk through the crowd And as we read the gospels, Jesus never went back to Nazareth II. Jesus Power over the Spiritual World Vss Capernaum was a small town on the sea of Galilee It was considered Jesus center of ministry 11 of Jesus disciples were from the area Judas the betrayer was not from there Jesus was teaching in the synagogue and the people were amazed at his teaching, but then a disturbance came to the synagogue Jesus had just faced Satan, the head of demons and had victory Here was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit Jesus rebuked the fever, fever leave her! And she was healed instantly It s not that she had to rest in bed for the rest of the day

Satan rebelled against God and persuaded ⅓ of the angels in heaven to go with him. These were the demons that Jesus was fighting It was during Jesus teaching that the man screamed at Jesus Have you ever had a moment when time stopped and there was a public confrontation and everyone s eyes are on the 2 people arguing I was a visiting speaker in a church in Chicago and I was preaching about how people all over the world can have a relationship with God through Jesus. A young woman stood up during my teaching and said why do you want to change people s religion, you should leave them the way they are. I had never had anyone do that while I was teaching I tried to explain to her that people would have a better life in Christ But she would not listen and as I recall, she left the church Jesus coming to the earth was confronting the enemy-satan Have you come to destroy us? Meaning all the demons Jesus came to the earth as the Savior of mankind, saving people from going to hell and offering people a place in God s family. That was defeating and destroying Satan and his demons Satan had a kingdom of people on his side, those who didn t follow Jesus Satan would be losing people to God s kingdom And at the end of time, Jesus will come back to the earth and defeat and destroy Satan and his demons, throwing them into a lake of fire The demon knew who Jesus was-the holy one of God But Jesus was not having a conversation with the enemy Jesus would free this man who was in bondage to a demon And with a few words, the authority of Jesus freed this man The people are amazed, they liked his teaching and now they saw that Jesus was no ordinary man. Here was a man with spiritual power And this news spread everywhere. III. Jesus Healed the Sick Vss Synagogue happened on Saturday for Jewish people Peter-Simon probably invited Jesus to his home for a meal Simon s mother in law was sick with a high fever She was in bed all day and maybe for a long time They didn t have the medicine or hospitals that we have today People got sick and died, it was a part of life Jesus was asked to help her, he cast out a demon, maybe he can heal She got up and started working, she was 100% better right away One good deed deserves another, word of the healing spread through town and people started to bring sick people to Simon s home And it sounds like it wasn t just a few people, but many people People were lined up to be healed Jesus went to each person, put his hands on them and healed them This was compassion on a large scale Some who came were demon possessed They always said something about Jesus being the Son of God And Jesus told them to remain quiet and cast them out He didn t want people to be learning who he was from a demon The next morning, Jesus goes out early to a quiet place He goes out to pray and talk to God the Father He needed a quiet time after all that ministry the day before He also needed a time to refocus, what do I need to do? The people find him and they want him to stay, they had a great healer and teacher. But Jesus knows that he must preach the good news to others That message of salvation that all can have a relationship with God through the Son. The message isn t just for one town, it s for everyone
