Leader BIBLE STUDY Use Week of: During His ministry, Jesus demonstrated His power and authority through miracles. Among Jesus healing miracles, Jesus drove out demons, or unclean spirits. Demons are evil angels created, spiritual beings who sinned against God. The Bible identifies Satan as the head of the demons. (See Job 1:6.) 2 Demons are enemies of God. They oppose God s work and try to turn people away from God and the gospel. When Jesus was preaching at the synagogue in Capernaum, an unclean spirit began to shout through a man. Jesus commanded the spirit to be quiet, and He drove the demon away. Jesus power over demons marked the launch of God s kingdom. When Jesus cast a demon out of a man who was blind and mute, He said, If I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you (Matt. 12:28). Still today, demons try all sorts of strategies to keep believers from being effective witnesses for Christ, including doubt, temptation, pride, guilt, and fear. But we do not need to fear demons because Jesus gives believers authority over them. In the New Testament, Jesus gave His disciples authority over demons, and the demons submitted to them when they commanded them in Christ s name. (See Luke 9:1; 10:17,19; Acts 8:7; 16:18.) Jesus said that Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44), and he is the accuser (Rev. 12:10). Satan s goal is to turn people away from God. When Satan accuses us as guilty before the Judge, he is right; our sin makes us guilty. But he leaves out the gospel: Jesus died for our sin. He took the punishment we deserve. When Jesus died on the cross, He defeated Satan. (See Heb. 2:14-15.) One day Satan will be cast out forever. (Rev. 20:10) 68 Preschool Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 26 Session LifeWay 1

The BIBLE STORY Jesus Drove Out Evil Spirits Mark 1:21-28; Luke 4:31-37 Jesus was grown up when He began teaching and helping people. When people met Jesus for the first time, they said, Who is this man? Some people thought Jesus was a prophet a messenger from God like the prophets God sent long ago. Yes, God sent Jesus to earth, but Jesus was more than a prophet. He was the Messiah God had promised! One day, Jesus and His friends went to a city called Capernaum (kuh PUHR nay uhm). Capernaum was a city near the sea. That particular day was a special day the Sabbath day. Every week on the Sabbath, God s people rested. They stopped working and they worshiped God. They went to the synagogue to pray and learn about God s laws. Jesus went into the synagogue, and He began to teach the people about God. The people there listened to Jesus, and they were amazed! Other men had taught in the synagogue before, but Jesus was not like the other men. He taught like someone who was in charge, like He really knew what He was talking about. All of a sudden, a man in the synagogue started shouting. Something was wrong with the man. The man had an evil spirit inside him, and the spirit was an enemy of God. What do You want with us, Jesus? The words came out of the man s mouth, but it was the spirit inside him that was talking. Did You come here to destroy us? I know who You are; You are the Holy One of God! The spirit was right. Jesus is holy, and God sent Him to earth. But Jesus told the spirit to stop. Be quiet, and come out of him! Jesus said. The man with the spirit fell to the ground and started to shake. Then he shouted, and the spirit left him. The man was not hurt. The other people in the synagogue watched, and they asked questions like What s going on? They had never seen someone like Jesus before. When Jesus told the spirit what to do, the spirit obeyed Him. Everyone started to talk about Jesus. They told their friends and neighbors what Jesus had said and what He had done. Soon many 70 Preschool Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 26 Session LifeWay 3

people who lived in that land heard about Jesus. Christ Connection: Jesus made the evil spirit go away because He is more powerful than evil. One day, Jesus will come back and make all bad things go away forever. Jesus Performed Miracles LifeWay 4

This Is Amazing Grace song offering basket Allergy Alert favorite toys LOW PREP What Is More Powerful? activity page, 1 per kid pencils or crayons play dough play dough tools Welcome and Session Starter (15 20 minutes) Play the unit theme song in the background as you greet preschoolers and follow your church s security procedures. Set an offering basket near the door to collect at an appropriate time. Post an allergy alert, if necessary. Set out a few favorite toys, such as puzzles and blocks. Activity Page: What Is More Powerful? Encourage preschoolers to examine the four rows of items on the activity page. Many items or animals in each row might be powerful, but one item in each row is more powerful than the others. Help them circle the most powerful item in each row. Talk about power as kids work. Say Jesus is God s Son. Jesus is more powerful than anything or anybody! Today we are going to learn about one of the ways Jesus showed His power. Make powerful things with play dough Provide different colors of play dough for the children to choose from. As a group, think of several things that are powerful, such as a volcano or an airplane. Encourage each of the children to make something they think is powerful. Say In today s Bible story, we are going to learn how 72 Preschool Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 26 Session LifeWay 5

powerful Jesus is. Jesus is more powerful than all of the things we made with our play dough. Jesus is in charge of everything! construction paper scissors interlocking bricks or wooden blocks (optional) countdown video (optional) Transition cue: Ring the bell, show the countdown video, flip the lights, or clap a simple rhythm for children to copy to gain attention. Sort objects by size Before the children arrive, cut out different sizes of squares from construction paper. Mix up the squares and place them on the floor or on a table. Tell the children to place the squares in order from smallest to largest. If you have interlocking bricks or wooden blocks, ask the children to line those objects in order from smallest to largest as well. Make sure to use comparison words such as small, smaller, smallest or big, bigger, biggest to help kids make the connection as they work. Say Jesus is bigger and more powerful than everything! He is bigger and more powerful than every bad thing. Jesus is more powerful than all evil. Transition to Bible study Invite the children to move to large group by pretending to be powerful animals. Encourage everyone to pretend to be elephants, gorillas, lions, or any other powerful animals the children think of. Explain what it means to be in charge. Talk to the children about who is in charge of the powerful animals. Say Great job being powerful animals! Do you know that even though these animals are so powerful, when they are at the zoo, someone is in charge of them? Do you know who is in charge of the animals at the zoo? Zookeepers. Who is in charge of you at home? Mommy and Daddy! Do you know who is in charge of everything? Jesus! Jesus has power over everything. Let s learn about how He has power over evil spirits! Jesus is more powerful than all evil. Key Passage: John 20:30-31 Unit Christ Connection: Jesus miracles demonstrated His divine authority. Large Group Bible Study (10 15 minutes) Bible Key Passage Slide or Poster Written song Jesus Drove Out Evil Spirits video Bible Story Picture Slide or Poster Big Picture Question Slide or Poster Introduce the Bible story Review the key passage and sing Written using any hand motions you created the previous week. Remind the children that these verses remind us that Jesus performed miracles to help people believe that He is God s Son. Say John was one of Jesus disciples. John followed Jesus and learned from Him. After Jesus went back to heaven, God s Spirit helped John remember the things Jesus said and the miracles He performed. John said he didn t write down everything Jesus did, but he did write about the things that showed Jesus is God s Son. The Bible story today is about one of the miracles Jesus performed. Watch or tell the Bible story Say Last week we learned about Jesus healing a sick boy. This week, we are going to learn how Jesus made an evil spirit go away. This miracle showed how powerful Jesus is. Two people wrote down this miracle in the Bible: Luke and Mark. Open your Bible and show kids where to find Mark 1 and Luke 4. Tell the Bible story in your own words using the 74 Preschool Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 26 Session LifeWay 7

script provided or show the Bible story video Jesus Drove Out Evil Spirits. Say When Jesus was teaching in the synagogue, a man started shouting. Something was wrong with the man. He really needed Jesus help! Jesus showed His power over evil! How could Jesus make evil spirits go away? Jesus is more powerful than all evil. Timeline Map Talk about the Bible story Refer to the timeline map as you review the Bible story. 1. What was Jesus doing when the man started shouting? (Jesus was teaching people about God.) 2. What was wrong with the man? (He had an evil spirit inside of him.) 3. What did Jesus tell the evil spirit to do? (He told the evil spirit to stop. Jesus said Be quiet, and come out of him! ) 4. What did the evil spirit do when Jesus told it to stop? (The evil spirit obeyed Jesus and left the man.) 5. How could Jesus make evil spirits go away? Jesus is more powerful than all evil. Say Jesus made evil spirits go away because He is more powerful than evil. One day, Jesus will come back and make all bad things go away forever. Transition to small groups Return to small groups, where you will do activities to reinforce the session. Do activities one of these ways: as a group, all at the same time in small groups that rotate through each activity set up as centers, allowing preschoolers to browse and choose Jesus Performed Miracles LifeWay 8

Small Group ACTIVITIES Session Title: Jesus Drove Out Evil Spirits Bible Passage: Mark 1:21-28; Luke 4:31-37 Big Picture Question: How could Jesus make evil spirits go away? Jesus is more powerful than all evil. Key Passage: John 20:30-31 Unit Christ Connection: Jesus miracles demonstrated His divine authority. Tip: Set up activities that work well for your kids and your budget. LOW PREP Small Group Activities (20 25 minutes) Talk about the big picture question and answer, Christ connection, or details from the Bible story in each activity to reinforce God s big story. Play a quiet game Ask the children what it means to talk gibberish. Tell them you want them to talk gibberish (or made-up words) until you raise both of your arms and say Be quiet! Do this several times until the children are immediately quiet when you give the command. Say Imagine being unable to control the words coming out of your mouth. That is what it was like for the man with an evil spirit. The man did not have any power over the evil spirit inside of him; in fact, no one had any power over the evil spirit except for Jesus! The man was finally free of the evil spirit when Jesus said, Be quiet and come out of him! How could Jesus make evil spirits go away? Jesus is more powerful than all evil. 76 Preschool Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 26 Session LifeWay 9

paper painter s tape crayons markers Make artwork in the negative Invite the children to sit down at a table. Give them each a piece of paper and a couple pieces of painter s tape. Tell them to tape their paper in any design they would like. Give the children crayons or markers to decorate their papers. When they are done, help them carefully remove the tape from the paper to reveal the negative, or white spaces. Say When you took the tape off of your drawing, you had power to remove something from your picture. In fact, you had so much power over the tape that it wasn t even hard for you to take the tape off the paper. In a similar way, Jesus had the power to take away the evil spirit from the man in the Bible story. Jesus had so much power over the spirit that it wasn t hard for Jesus to make the evil spirit go away! How could Jesus make evil spirits go away? Jesus is more powerful than all evil. We do not have to be afraid because Jesus is powerful! Play Simon Says Play Simon Says according to the traditional rules. One child is Simon and everyone has to do whatever Simon says. (For example, Simon says, Touch your head. ) But if Simon does not say to do something ( Touch your head. ) and someone does it, he is out. Continue playing until every child has a chance to be Simon. Say Do you remember what happened in the Bible story today when Jesus told the evil spirit, Be quiet and come out of him? That s right! The spirit obeyed Jesus and went away! We do not have to be afraid because Jesus is powerful! How could Jesus make evil spirits go away? Jesus is more powerful than all evil. 11 musical or rhythm instruments This Is Amazing Grace song (optional) Written song (optional) masking tape Conduct the band Provide the children with different musical or rhythm instruments. Explain to them that they will be the band and you will be the conductor. You will do the conductor motions and say how you want them to play their instruments: loudly, softly, silly, and seriously. When you say Be quiet, they must stop playing. After a few rounds of playing the game, invite kids to play their musical instruments as they listen to the theme song, key passage song, or a familiar praise song of your choice. Say In a band like ours, the conductor is in charge of the music and the band playing the music. In our Bible story, Jesus was in charge of the evil spirit in the man. The evil spirit had to do whatever Jesus said to do. How could Jesus make evil spirits go away? Jesus is more powerful than all evil. Hop, hop, hop Tape two parallel lines across the floor about six feet apart. Guide the children to stand behind one of the lines and to take turns hopping to the other line while an adult helper counts aloud how many hops it takes each child to get to the second line. When a child reaches the second line, she will say Jesus is more powerful than all evil! as loud as she can. If you have a large class, form two groups. One group hops while the other counts, and then switch roles. Say How could Jesus make evil spirits go away? Jesus is more powerful than all evil. 78 Preschool Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 26 Session LifeWay 11

countdown video (optional) Allergy Alert snack food paper cups and napkins Journal Page Bible Story Coloring Page books and puzzles crayons Snack and Transition (20 minutes) Play the countdown video to signal the end of activities time and gather for snack time. Take a restroom break and wash hands or use hand sanitizer. Choose volunteers to help set up for the snack. Remind children during snack time to say please and thank you. Thank God for the snack. Transition When a child finishes her snack and throws away any trash, she may select a puzzle or book to examine, play quietly with play dough or a favorite toy, or color the Bible story coloring picture. This would also be a great time to encourage her to draw a picture on the journal page of something that is powerful (a lion, a race car, or an airplane). Remind the children that Jesus is more powerful than everything. Jesus is in charge of everything, so we do not have to be afraid. Lead the children through a prayer time, asking God to show them how powerful He is. Pray that the children wouldn t be afraid of bad things because Jesus is more powerful than all bad things. Pray that God would help them understand that He is in charge of everything in their lives and they can trust Him with anything. If parents are picking up their children at this time, tell them something that their child enjoyed doing or did well, such as Sean helped our visitor feel welcome today. If new leaders are arriving, quietly share useful information about kids who are present. Jesus Performed Miracles LifeWay 12
