A COMPARISON BETWEEN CALCIUM HYPOCHLORITE WATER TREATMENT AND NON-TREATED WATER ON THE NUMBER OF BACTERIA AND SURVIVAL RATE IN LARVAL REARING OF PACIFIC WHITE SHRIMP (Litopenaeus vannamei) Pattama Wiriyapattanasub*, Chatcharee Kaewsuralikhit, Niti Chuchird and Chalor Limsuwan LOGO Faculty of Fisheries,Kasetsart University

Outline Introduction Objectives Results Conclusion and Recommendation

Introduction In hatcheries Major diseases during larval rearing (luminescent bacteria from Vibrio harveyi) and fungal diseases Chlorine has been used for water treatment (20-25 ppm)in hatcheries

Recently the world market demand for organic agriculture products as well as aquaculture products

Organic products

Principles of organic aquaculture Absence of GMOs in stocks and raw materials using for feed production Limitation of stocking density No artificial feed ingredients Criteria for fishmeal sources; in general, decreased protein and fishmeal content of diets

Not use inorganic fertilizers Not use synthetic pesticides and herbicides Restriction on energy consumption (e.g. regarding aeration) Preference for natural medicines

Intensive monitoring of environmental impact, protection of surrounding ecosystems and integration of natural plant communities in farm management Processing according to organic principles

Organic shrimp production has been started to develop and to practice not long ago Since 1991, Thailand has been the leader in exporting shrimp in the world market

Larval production of Sureerath farm is different from other hatcheries Sureerath farm is an organic farm, no chemicals used for water treatment, instead this farm used plastic sheet covered reservoir tank without aeration for 5-7 days before using the water for larval rearing

Objectives comparative study between using calcium hypochlorite for water treatment and non-treated water for larval rearing of Pacific white shrimp Bacteria counts (total bacteria and Vibrio sp.) Survival rate total length

Materials and methods Experimental design reservoir tank ; seawater salinity 30 ppt Calcium hypochlorite 25 ppm Treatment 1 Covered with black plastic sheet Treatment 2

Water from both groups (in reservoir tank) transferred to 500-liter fiber-glass tanks (4 tanks/group) Stocking density 25,000 nauplii/tank

Larvae Stage Day Stage 1 Nauplii 2 Zoea 1 3 Zoea 2 4 Zoea 3 5 Mysis 1 6 Mysis 2 7 Mysis 3 8 Postlarvae 1 9 Postlarvae 2 10 Postlarvae 3 11 Postlarvae 4 12 Postlarvae 5 13 Postlarvae 6 14 Postlarvae 7 15 Postlarvae 8 16 Postlarvae 9 17 Postlarvae 10 Nauplii day1 Zoea1-3 day2-4 Mysis1-3 day5-7 Postlarvae1-10; day8-17

Bacteria studies Water samples were used for both total bacteria count on plate count agar (PCA) and Vibrio count ontcbs agar Identify by API 20E

Conclusion and Recommendation Within 7 days, the water that covered with black plastic sheet can be safely used for larval rearing This method gave the same result as chlorine treatment and can be applied for using in the organic shrimp farming system
