3 Winter Carnival 2015 MESSAGE FROM THE 2015 WINTER CARNIVAL VOLUNTEERS: On behalf of the volunteers who have come together to make this year s events possible, we are excited to welcome you to the 26th Annual Schreiber Winter Carnival. Once again, our team of dedicated volunteers has stepped up to bring a full week of activities for our residents and those of the surrounding area. This year will feature many traditional events, as well as a few new ones. This year s festivities kick off with opening ceremonies on Friday, February 20th at 7:00pm. Don t miss old favorites such as the sliding party, hockey, bingo, ice show, pictionary and poker run. Also, check out some of our new events including outdoor skating parties on the 23rd and 27th, Burger Wars and of course Hockey in the Streets on March 1st! Thank you to all of the sponsors and donors who have come forward to make these events successful; without you, this would not be possible. There is something for everyone this week, so get off the couch and enjoy the festivities! MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Welcome to the 26th Annual Schreiber Winter Carnival. The best annual winter festival on the North Shore! As always, our great committees and volunteers have come together to provide a full line-up of great events for us to enjoy. 5 6:00 PM MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16 th Event: Spaghetti Dinner Hosted by: Schreiber Royal Canadian Legion Location: Schreiber Royal Canadian Legion Admission: $15.00 each There will be delicious caesar salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread and dessert! Doors open at 5:00pm. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20 th 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM Event: Luncheon and Penny Auction Hosted by: McCuaig Ladies in support of Furget-me-not Animal Shelter Admission: $8.00 per plate Audrey and the ladies are busy and at it again! On the menu today are their famous homemade panzerottis. Served with salad and dessert for one low price. During the event, the Furget-me-not Animal shelter in Terrace Bay will be hosting a penny auction. Winners will be announced after lunch at 1:30pm. 6 SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21 st 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Event: Sliding Party Hosted by: Schreiber Fire Department Location: Winnipeg Street Sliding Hill Come participate in this great afternoon of family fun! Bring your GT or toboggan, sled or whatever can get you down the hill! This event has become a carnival favorite! Hot Dogs and Hot Chocolate will be available for purchase compliments of the Schreiber Fire Department. 5:00 PM Event: Pizza Party Hosted by: The Voyageur Restaurant Location: The Voyageur Restaurant Large mouthwatering pizzas available throughout the evening for a special carnival price of only $15.00! Eat in or Take out! 2:00 PM SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd Event: Penny Auction Hosted by: Holy Angels CWL Admission: $1.00 per card Drop your tickets on a variety of exciting prizes then wait to see if your number is called. Doors open at 12:30pm with the calling beginning at 2:00pm. 6:30 PM Event: BINGO Hosted by: STBFC Admission: $20.00 Doors open at 6:30pm and calling will commence at 7:00pm. Refreshments will be available for purchase. You must be 18 or older to attend.
7 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23 rd Event: Luncheon Hosted by: St. John s ACW Admission: $7.00 for adults, $4.00 for children 12 and under Start the week off right! Meet for lunch at the Rec Centre for warm soup, delicious sandwiches and dessert. Beverage included. 6:00 PM Event: Hockey Jersey Themed Outdoor Skating Party Hosted by: Schreiber Activation and Revitalization Committee Location: Schreiber Outdoor Skating Rink Admission: Free Bring the family out for this new for 2015 event! Don t forget to wear your hockey jersey as you skate with a light display and music in the background. Local businesses will be open to provide warm beverages when it s time to warm up! 6:30 PM Event: Just Like Mom Hosted by: Schreiber Public School Parent Council Location: Schreiber Public School Gymnasium Admission: Free Just like the 1980 s game! Schreiber Public School invites all families to enter their names to have a chance to play. Must have the child s name with either a Mom, Dad, Grandparent or any family member! Child must be elementary school age. Snacks and beverages will be for sale.
8 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24 th Event: Luncheon and Craft Sale Hosted by: Auxiliary to the McCausland Hospital and Jason Nesbitt of the Investors Group. Admission: $7.00 Adults, $4.00 Children 12 and under Come and enjoy a hearty down home cold plate lunch with your choice of a variety of homemade desserts. The Hospital Gift Shop will also have a table selling everyone s favourites. 1:30 PM Event: Senior s Movie Day Hosted by: Township of Schreiber Location: Collingwood Court Admission: Free! Come join us for popcorn and a movie! 6:00 PM Event: Junior Pictionary Hosted by: Schreiber Activation and Revitalization Committee Admission: $10.00 per team (Adult Captain MUST accompany team) The children take the markers in hand and enjoy the game of Pictionary - JK to Grade 8 welcome- 4 person team. The Schreiber Public Library is hosting this year s Cake Walk. Concession open! 8:30 PM Event: Teen/ High School Pictionary Hosted by: Township of Schreiber Admission: $10.00 per team The teens take pens in hand and enjoy the game of Pictionary - Grade 9 to 12 welcome - 4 person team.
9 WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25 th 10:30 AM 11:30 AM Event: Community Connections Hosted by: Schreiber Public Library Location: Collingwood Court During this event they will be viewing Pat Halonen s video. 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM Event: Luncheon Hosted by: North Shore Harvest Cupboard/ Food Bank Admission: $7.00 for adults, $4.00 for children 12 and under Mid-Week of the Carnival and the NS Harvest Food Cupboard is serving up hearty bowls of chili, complete with homemade buns, dessert and beverage. 7:00 PM Event: Corporate Pictionary ~ Last Chance Draw ~ Burger Wars Champion Announcement Hosted by: Schreiber Parks and Recreation Committee Join us for the 26th Annual Corporate Pictionary and Last Chance Draw! Great Prizes up for grabs! Even if you are not playing Pictionary- everyone is welcome to cheer on their favourite team and participate in the Last Chance! Event is 19+. Concession and bar open!
10 THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26 th 12:00 NOON- 1:00 PM Event: Hot Dog Luncheon Hosted by: Holy Angels School Location: Holy Angels School Gym Fee: $1.75 Hot Dog, Cookies, Cupcakes or Rice Krispie Squares. Best hot dogs in town and you can enjoy it with the students of Holy Angels School. Everyone welcome! 4:00 PM- 7:00 PM Event: Can Skate Element Event Hosted by: Schreiber-Terrace Bay Figure Skating Club Location: Schreiber Arena Admission: $3.00 The CanSkate Element Event is an initiative developed by Skate Canada in support of the organization s ongoing implementation of the Long-Term Athlete Development Model. This club level event has been formatted to introduce CanSkate participants to the competition component of sport while providing them with the opportunity to showcase their skills in a fun and interactive environment. Come watch our local skaters show off their talents! 7:00 PM- 11:00 PM Event: Legion Wing Night Hosted by: Schreiber Royal Canadian Legion Location: Schreiber Royal Canadian Legion Our volunteer Fry Cooks enjoy trying to improve their cooking techniques to provide tasty, delicious food for you. Our kitchen serves crispy wings, golden fries, tasty mushroom caps and great mozza sticks! You ve been good all week ~ come out tonight for supper at 7 pm to 11 pm. Take Out is available :00 PM Event: Morgan Houston s Charity Alumni Hockey Game Hosted by: Morgan Houston Location: Schreiber Arena Come check out the North Star Alumni face off against the River Rat Alumni! After the game join Morgan Houston at the Legion for wings! Concession open!
11 11:30 AM- 1:30 PM FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27 th Event: Croissant Luncheon Hosted by: Holy Angels CWL Location: Recreation Centre Admission: $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for children 12 and under The ladies of the CWL will serve mouth- watering croissants filled with your favourites! Included is soup and dessert. Take out will be available. 6:00 PM Event: 80 s Themed Outdoor Skating Party #2 Hosted by: Schreiber Activation and Revitalization Committee Location: Schreiber Outdoor Skating Rink * (Weather permitting, alternate location Schreiber Arena) Admission: Free Bring the family out Friday evening for the second installment of this new for 2015 event! Break out your best 80 s outfits because we re turning back the clock for a night that will be totally radical! Celebrate the best decade yet with a light display and music in the background. Local businesses will be open to provide warm beverages when it s time to warm up! 6:00 PM Event: Games Night at the Legion Hosted by: Schreiber Royal Canadian Legion and Schreiber Volunteer Fire Department Location: Schreiber Royal Canadian Legion Admission: $5.00 entry fee for any two games Prizes will be given out. $5.00 entry fee for any 2 Games ~ choose from Pool, Shuffle Board, Cribbage, Ping Pong or Fuse Ball. 12 SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28 th Event: Pat Halonen Sr. Memorial Winter Carnival Poker Run Hosted by: Volunteers of the Schreiber Royal Canadian Legion, Sponsored by Payne s Auto Getting people out to enjoy the gorgeous scenery & great trails right in our own back yard safely, promote the potential for camp lots in our area, exude comradery & share stories & laughs on the trail all on your snowmobile. This illustrates Pat Halonen Sr. s vision & dedication to the Schreiber Winter Carnival Poker Run each year. He did this as a volunteer of the Schreiber Royal Canadian Legion with proceeds donated to the Branch. With the permission of his family we have named the run in his honor. We know that no one will ever fill Pat s skidoo boots, but we will do our best in striving to achieve his goals. Route to be announced. Camps participating this year are Dean Lemieux, Dan Power and Neil Pearce. Prizes awarded for best poker hands. Special thanks to Payne s Auto, the camps involved, the many Legion volunteers & Schreiber Parks & Recreation. Adult hand: $10.00 each ~ buy as many hands as you wish. That s right ~ this is not just for the Poker Run! Enjoy a tasty beef on a bun sandwich with a steaming, delicious bowl of soup. Fried onions are optional. Choice of soups: Turkey veg, Beef barley, Hamburger. Soup/Sandwich combo - $6.00. Take Out is available at $0.50 extra. 8:00 PM Event: Mixed Dart Tournament Hosted by: Mixed Dart League Location: Royal Canadian Legion Admission: $5.00 plus a Food Bank Donation
13 10:00 AM 5:00 PM SUNDAY, MARCH 1st Event: Hockey in the Streets Hosted by: Township of Schreiber and the ARC Committee Location: Scotia Street Admission: Free Come out and take in our first annual Hockey in the Streets Road Hockey Tournament and Championship Trophy Presentation! Sign up a team of 4-7 players with at least two women and one goalie on the team. Then on Winter Carnival Opening Night, bring your team out to see when you will be playing in the Road Hockey Tournament! Games will be 30 minutes in length with two 12 minute halves and a 6 minute half time. Teams will play 4-on-4 style plus a goalie. At least one female per team must be on the road playing at all times. 5:00 PM- 7:00 PM Event: Traditional Spaghetti and Meatball Supper with Draw for 11 cash prizes! Hosted by: Drifters and Friends Admission: $10.00 Adults; $7.00 Children 5 to 12; 4 and under eat free Long noodles or penne with meatballs, served with salad and a dessert. Come try our homemade pasta and bring the whole family. This is one night where it is ok to let loose and Mangia!!!
