1 The 21 st Annual Haines Craftbeer and Homebrew Festival homebrew competition was judged Friday, May 24 th, with prizes awarded at the festival on Saturday, May 25 th. The contest was sponsored by the Southeast Alaska State Fair and sanctioned by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) and the American Homebrewers Association (AHA). Thirty brewers entered 107 beers, five meads and a cider for the judges' consideration. Beers were judged based on technical merit and adherence to published style guidelines. Judges provided written feedback on each beer. Most beers were submitted from Alaska including Haines, Juneau, Fairbanks, and Anchorage; however there was a strong slate of entries from Whitehorse, Yukon as well as beers received from Texas, Michigan, and North Carolina. The contest was organized by Rob and Ardy Miller of Haines. Nineteen judges, many certified by the BJCP, tasted, pondered and discussed the merits of the beers. The beer judged as the Best of Show was a Russian Imperial Stout entitled Imperial Stout and was submitted by Michael Kulachkosy and Rachel Finn of Whitehorse, Yukon. Kulachkosy and Finn s beers also received two Best of Division medals. The other two Best of Division medals were won by Kyle McNaughton of Juneau, and Jeff Shearer of Anchorage. Besides the sponsorship of the Southeast Alaska State Fair, generous assistance was provided by the Alaskan Brewing Company of Juneau which provided judges and an entry drop-off location, and the Haines Brewing Company of Haines and Arctic Brewing Supply of Anchorage which also served as entry drop-off locations. The following merchants provided generous support for the event in the form of prizes: Mountain Market, Haines Brewing, and Second Nature (Haines); Skagway Brewing (Skagway); Alaska Brewing (Juneau); Arctic Brewing Supply and Celestial Meadery (Anchorage); and Alaska Homebrew Supply (Palmer).
