Grammar Past simple: statements Squanto Don Juan Don Juan announced the occasion as America s first Thanksgiving celebration. The Pilgrim Fathers created Thanksgiving to celebrate their first harvest in the New World. Luckily they had a Native American with them. People from El Paso say the first Thanksgiving didn t happen in Plymouth with the Pilgrim Fathers. To form the Past simple of regular verbs we add the letters -_ or - to the base form of the verb. (Irregular verbs just have to be learnt!) To make past sentences negative we use the word (did not). hot snowing sunny 5 c) Look back at the paragraph Help from a local. Here are two less well-known stories about it. A When the Pilgrim Fathers arrived in Plymouth in 1620 and looked around, they realised they were thousands of miles away from England. Luckily they had a Native American called Squanto with them. Squanto helped them settle into the new home. He showed them how to catch eels. He answered their questions about how to grow corn. He also worked as a translator between the English and the local people. A year later, when the Pilgrim Fathers celebrated their first Thanksgiving, they had a lot to thank Squanto for. B People from El Paso, Texas, say the first Thanksgiving didn t happen in Plymouth with the Pilgrim Fathers. They claim that their county held the first ever Thanksgiving feast. But it was not a celebration of the harvest. In 1598, Spanish explorer Don Juan de Oñate went to the area with the members of his expedition. After a four-week journey, they came to the banks of the Rio Grande and the thirsty travelers drank the cool river water. Don Juan thought they should all take a break from their exploration. On April 30th they made and ate a huge feast. Don Juan announced the occasion as America s first Thanks giving celebration. 30 thirty

It was fantastic. Grammar Past simple: questions Did you have a good time? Yes, I did. / No, I didn t. What sort of things did you do? We went to the cinema. To make questions in the Past simple, we use the auxiliary. 6 c) You have three minutes. Find out about your partner s weekend and complete the table. To find out an activity, your partner can only answer Yes or No. To find one detail for each activity you can ask a whquestion (What? / Where? / When? / Why? / ). He goes into the freezer and finds that there s only one really thin turkey left. He brings it out to show the man. No, no. That turkey is much too small. Have you got a bigger one? says the man. The butcher takes the bird back into the freezer and waits a few minutes and brings the same turkey back out to the man. Oh, no, says the man, That one doesn t look any better. I ll have to take both of them! Holiday jokes Which side of the turkey has the most feathers? The outside. A turkey farmer had the same problem every Thanksgiving. Everyone in his family liked the turkey s leg best. But there were never enough legs to keep everyone happy. He decided to create the perfect Thanksgiving turkey. After many months he finally did it.
