This is our first ever edition; each month there will be a newsletter with facts according to the month, the topics we have been studying in History and Geography and lots more! 2 In year 8 we have been learning about the slave trade, we have been learning about conditions on slave ships, how Africans were captured and enslaved and how they were prepared for sale. The Slave Trade then: The Slave Trade, in the 15th century, was an awful time for the Africans who were being imprisoned to help the Europeans with growing the cotton, Tobacco and sugar. 2

3 The Slave Trade now: Modern Slave Trade is still happening today. The practice still continues today in one form or another in many countries all over the World. From women forced into prostitution, children and adults forced to work in agriculture, domestic work, or factories and sweatshops producing goods for global supply chains, entire families forced to work for nothing to pay off generational debts. 3

4 Important dates in History October Edition What are the most significant dates in History that occur in October? 1 st October King Henry VIII was born. 2 nd October King Richard III was born. 7 th October Women became competent of becoming full members at Oxford University and were allowed to take degrees. 10 th October This is the day in History that Emmeline Pankhurst founded The Women s Social and Political Union at her house in Manchester, campaigning for women s suffrage. 14 th October King Harold, the Anglo- Saxon king was shot in the eye at the Battle of Hastings. 24 th October Henry VIII s third wife Jane Seymour, died after the birth of Edward VI. 4

5 Victoria on ITV, is it historically accurate? On ITV recently has been the series Victoria. It has hooked many viewers in to watching and with a historical theme based in the 19 th century; it does compose of some accurate features. However as you may expect from movies and series today there are many inaccurate touches and lead us to believe the fiction and not fact. The story begins with Alexandrina Victoria becoming queen and having her coronation. Very quickly you can see change of history and fictional plot that are placed to entice viewers in to watch more. One obvious part that struck me was the relationship between Victoria and Lord Melbourne (the current prime minister at the time). For one thing, they made him over a decade younger as really he was in his fifties when she took to the throne. In real life he had a tendency to fall asleep in public and wasn t portrayed as the supposedly handsome actor in the episodes. In contrast, apparently they did have a close relationship but Victoria looked up to him as more of a Father figure that she never had (as her Father died when she was young). I believe that the facts about her looking up to Lord Melbourne as a Father is true but Victoria would never have proclaimed her love for him, to me it is just nonsense. There are written documents from her diary that prove that she and he were close; but nowadays it seems historical writers research the truth and spin it into a more entertaining fantasy that interests readers perhaps more than the actual truth. There are many other key aspects of the series that have errors, most of them about romantic relationships that never existed. To differentuate between the negative mistakes in the episodes, I consider it to be a good drama, containing many accurate sections and definitely something enjoyable to watch, if like me, you like fun and interesting historically themed dramas! Look at the difference! I thought it really interesting to look at real life pictures of Victoria and Lord Melbourne and the actors. I think you can really see the difference between the two and represents how different they were in real life opposed to the actors and actresses. 5

6 Geography October term This term we have been learning about bringing the outside in. This involves population, webcams and Google Earth. This term we have been using the ipads and laptops in our lessons. This has been fun because we get to learn different websites such as: Africam, skyline, Google Earth and Earthcam. We have also been earning about population and population Rate: The population of the UK. Is about 65 million people. The yearly growth rate in the UK is 0.61% 6
