From the Superintendent s Desk Our job first and foremost at Southwest School is to educate students ALL of our students and to encourage them to reach their full potential. This month I want to focus on a few of the programs we have in place to help our students be successful, especially at the elementary level. Most of you will probably have heard of Title I, which is a federal program which provides additional instructional support to students. The amount of Title I funding we receive correlates to the number of free and reduced students we have. In the past, Southwest Livingston Elementary was a targeted Title I school, which meant we had to identify students who were in need of additional services, based on multiple criteria factors. Because of changing regulations and a free and reduced lunch rate of over 40%, Southwest was encouraged to make the switch from being a targeted Title I school to being a School-Wide Title I School. So what is a Title I School? A Title I school uses federal Title I funds to help any and all students grades PK through 6. While we still have a part time Title I teacher, her job is more of being a team teacher in all elementary classrooms. She pulls students to work in small groups based on current teacher collected data. The groups and the skills being taught in those groups change continually as mastery is obtained, meaning we have more of a team teaching approach to student learning. The bulk of our federal Title I money can then be used to provide professional development and supplemental materials for use by all of our elementary students and staff, which is a win-win situation for our district. Interestingly enough, the provisions for our Title I preschool remain the same. At the elementary level we are implementing Positive Behavior Intervention Support or PBIS (sometimes referred to as PBS) for short. PBIS team members have developed common language expectations (rules) for students to follow: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. These expectations are posted throughout the school and teachers provide modeling experiences so all students understand what these rules look like at school the expectations remain constant as students move from grade level to grade level. Students are rewarded with Cat Cash for exhibiting exemplary behavior. Another program that provides extra support to students is called Response to Intervention or RTI for short. We have time set aside during the school day to provide extra support for struggling students in any subject and at any grade level. RTI is like the big umbrella that covers each student, and services that we offer such as the Title I support, PBIS, special education, tutoring, and designated RTI time all fit in under that big umbrella. Some mistakenly think RTI is an extra study hall for students, and that is not the case. The RTI time may be used to reteach a concept to a student who did not get it the first time, or it may be teaching a student survival skills in the classroom, such as time management or note-taking. RTI may also consist of the school counselor or nurse helping a student get support services outside of the school system. By having several support systems in place, our goal is help all of our students have successful academic careers at Southwest. If you have any questions about any of our programs or would like to provide input, please let either Ms. Rex or myself know. In closing, I just want to remind everyone to get signed up for Textcaster through Livingston County. This is the only system we will be using to send out notifications, so if you don t sign up, you won t receive notifications (including school closings or early outs). Go to the website below, or click on the link on the home page of our school website, or look for the instructions on our FaceBook page. Until next month Cindy Barnes

From the Principal's Desk Happy Halloween! It does not seem possible that we are through October already. The elementary moved their Halloween parties to the Friday before Halloween, and I believe the students looked forward to it the entire week. The end of October was also RED RIBBON week that students have been learning about the dangers of drugs, make smart choices, and being prepared. Mrs. Lange set up several assemblies like Think First that all Jr. High and High School students attended to talk about the use of seat belts, not drinking and driving, and texting while driving. At the assembly the students met two survivors of head injuries and heard their stories. The elementary 3rd through 5th graders attended an assembly on being prepared in case of a disaster with the Pillow Case Project. In addition, both the elementary and high school attended drug prevention assemblies to talk about the danger of drugs and its effects on the people around them. The year is going by so quickly with football finishing up, with the boys playing in district playoffs Friday October 21st. The prices for the game has increased to $7.00. for admission this is set my MSHSAA and this is for all the games no matter if you are a student or a senior. Because the weather is getting colder, please remind your child/children to dress for the weather. Mornings are cold, so sending your child on a cold bus in the morning with shorts and no jacket is discouraging. Your child could develop a cold and miss school. Also, if you have not signed up for text caster, please get signed up so that when that first heavy snow or that dreaded ice comes and we dismiss for school, you will get an alert and know when school is called off. The textcaster also has really important information about school events that are coming up. November is going to be busy so please make sure your check out the calendar on the website for these events. November 1st the juniors will be taking rh ASVAB. That is a test to identify the students; strengths in occupational as well as vocational areas. Another upcoming event is the Senior Composite on November 3rd so seniors get those haircuts done. November 5th begins the Norborne Tourney for Jr. High Basket ball the bracket is on the website. Notice we start the tournament on Saturday November 5th rather than on Monday. Conference Choir will be on the 9th of November at Breckenridge school in which the Jr. high Music Class will attend to work on music from 1:00-4:00pm and have a performance that night that starts at 6:30pm. The band will be marching in the Chillicothe Holiday parade on the 19th so come out and enjoy the parade and support our students. Veterans, please, if you are able to attend our Veterans Appreciation Assembly on November 18th, you are more than welcome. We re serving breakfast, and the assembly will follow at 8:30. Students K-12 will be putting on an assembly to thank the local veterans in the community. Please RSVP so that we have a count of the number of people attending breakfast. There are many more events that are happening in November including Thanksgiving break. Please check out the school calendar on the website or the daily bulletin to keep up with these events. I am looking forward to a great fall with varsity basketball starting and junior high basketball winding down with December coming soon. If you have any questions or need to visit with me please, please call the school and I will be happy to talk to you. Shelly Rex (660)

Counselor s o r n e r Members of the Southwest Livingston County R-1 School District recognize the many needs in our community. As a school, it is our goal to provide students with the best education possible. For students to effectively learn, they must have their basic needs met and that can be hard for some families to do. Thanks to generous donations and hard work, we will host our first clothing drive at Southwest School on Thursday, November 17, 2016 from 4:00-6:00 pm. This event will take place in the library. There is a junior high basketball game that night which will begin at 6:00 pm. We will have winter coats, hats, gloves, shoes, clothes, some Christmas and home items, and other miscellaneous items. If you have a specific need, please call the school at We make no promises, but may be able to find what you need. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Lange at school or Meredith Lange SW Livingston R-1 Counselor

Greetings from 2nd Grade Here is a chart students have been filling in as a class. In this chart, students get to show their feelings about a book with emoji s! Who doesn t love using an emoji!? Students were very eager to show their feelings. They are so close to having it all the way full. I m sure we ll finish it soon! Until next time, Mrs. Hinnen

Halloween Fun!! Halloween is always fun, and this year s parade was no exception. FBLA, Student Council, NHS, Senior Class, and FCCLA handed out candy for all of the elementary school students

Driving Safely Southwest students had the opportunity to experience the effects of impaired and distracted driving without even getting behind the wheel of a car. With special googles and other simulation devices, they learned firsthand the dangers of driving while distracted or impaired. Driving simulator provided by It Only Takes One.
