2 Provider Learning Programme Learning outcomes TCD MSc in Hospital Pharmacy On successful completion of this programme, (90 ECTS credits) students should be able to: Website: Utilise the broad clinical knowledge assimilated to apply therapeutic principles to patient care. Operate both as an autonomous clinical practitioner and as an effective member of a multi-disciplinary team by critically appraising research and using good communication skills to put forward evidence based drug therapies and procedures. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with patients and tailor information according to their needs. Form ethically and socially sound judgements regarding patient pharmaceutical care based on the information available. Evaluate new therapies, technologies, processes and practice approaches in hospital pharmacy practice and review their appropriateness for implementation locally. Demonstrate the ability to carry out independent study involving the critical application of research and/or audit of activities to improve the efficacy and productivity of the hospital pharmacy 2

3 TCD Postgraduate Diploma/M.Sc. in Community Pharmacy (PG Dip. 60 ECTS credits; M.Sc. 90 ECTS) Applications to undertake individual elements of the programme on a stand-alone basis may be considered. service. Demonstrate competency in practical dispensary skills and to apply ethical, professional and legal principles when working in the dispensary. Show proficiency in the skills required to operate in an aseptic unit and the ability to utilise the principles of aseptic processes and good manufacturing practice. Employ appropriate research, critical appraisal and communication skills needed to work as a medicines information pharmacist. Instigate, maintain and appraise their own self- directed learning. Assemble and critically assess, in the context of research, a body of material relative to improvement of the practice of hospital pharmacy and disseminate this to other healthcare professionals/academics either by publication or direct communication. Demonstrate the requisite skills to practice as a specialist hospital pharmacist. Outcomes: After successful completion of the Diploma in Community Pharmacy, students will be able to: Provide effective advice to patients on 3

4 Website: their medication, disease management and disease prevention; Respond confidently to patients symptoms, making a valuable contribution to patient care as part of the primary healthcare team; Interpret clinical and laboratory data; Communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals; Evaluate clinical literature and drug claims critically, and give prescribers sound advice on drug choice, disease management and formulary development; Identify ways in which community pharmacists can monitor drug therapy and recognise warning signs; Develop and practice pharmaceutical care in their workplace; Implement effective business management practices; Undertake a self-audit of their practice. Successful completion of the M.Sc. in Community Pharmacy will also lead to the outcomes above, but in addition students will be able to: Identify suitable methodology for conducting and reporting pharmacy practice research; Undertake research on a topic of their 4

5 choice relevant to community pharmacy practice, and report the findings in an appropriate scholarly manner. 6 Professional self-audit Research principles and methods TCD MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology (90 ECTS credits) Outcomes: On successful completion of the programme, students will be able to: Website: explain how medicinal preparations are formulated, tested and manufactured demonstrate knowledge of key methodologies used in drug formulation and delivery demonstrate competency in pharmaceutical calculations and numerical methods used in pharmaceutical technology demonstrate an advanced knowledge of drug administration, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and pharmacokinetics demonstrate the application of nanotechnology in pharmacy and medicine employ the biopharmaceutical principles of drug delivery in the formulation of advanced dosage forms employ research methodologies relevant to drug formulation, delivery and biopharmaceutics utilise knowledge assimilated in drug delivery for drug development within the regulatory framework 6

8 TCD MSc in Healthcare Infection Management (90 ECTS Credits) Website: medicines Critically analyse existing analytical methods Demonstrate an appreciation of the differences between small molecule and biotech drugs and the different regulations applying to biotech drugs Demonstrate knowledge of issues relevant to pharmaceutical water, its classification and qualification Carry out analysis on biotech drugs and interpret analytical results Perform pharmacopeial analysis methods accurately and efficiently Develop and perform pharmacological and toxicological assays and interpret results Carry out statistical analysis on pharmaceutical data Employ appropriate research, critical appraisal and communication skills needed to work as a pharmaceutical analyst Instigate, maintain and appraise their own self- directed learning. Outcomes: On successful completion of this programme, students should be able to: Describe and discuss pathogens that are associated with human infection and disease. 8

9 Explain the essential principles of infection control. Interpret laboratory data e.g. molecular, serological, in the identification of the underlying cause of a disease. Create and design strategies to control the spread of infectious disease. Plan outbreak control strategies. Critically appraise the validity and outcomes of molecular tests. Make judgment on epidemiological data. Perform standard bioinfomatic tasks. Understand the workings of a busy hospital laboratory, clinical service and a statutory body (HSPC). Define minimal standards for environmental hygiene within clinics/hospitals. Track waste and contamination sources within hospitals and define if they present hazards. Evaluate and appraise methodologies to prevent infection in critical areas such as transplant units. Understand the principles of laboratory and clinic design. Understand the major types of antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents. Demonstrate how resistance to antimicrobials occurs. 9

10 Distinguish between antimicrobial resistance in the hospital and community. Formulate and assess a prescribing policy. Illustrate how multidisciplinary methods can prevent infections in transplant/itu patients. Design strategies to control the spread of resistant organisms e.g. MRSA in a hospital. Design educational programs for infection control. Evaluate the extent of postoperative wound infection, establish methodologies to reduce this. Present pre-project proposals. *ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is a system of applying standardised credits to teaching and learning in higher education and formal lifelong learning. This system has been implemented across Europe in order to facilitate international transparency between education providers as well as the recognition of all studies. The system allows for the transfer of learning experiences between different institutions (both nationally and internationally), greater learner mobility and more flexible routes to gain formal qualifications. It also aids curriculum design and quality assurance. In order for a learning programme to be assigned ECTS credits, one important criteria is that of inbuilt assessment or measure of performance of the individual learner which makes it an appropriate method of ensuring learning outcomes have been met.
