Begin with a cruise to the Palomino Islands, inhabited by sea lions and guano birds before visiting Lima s pre-columbian treasures at the Larco Museum. Our journey continues to Cusco with a special visit to the UNSAAC-YALE International Center which displays, conserves and studies the Machu Picchu archaeological collections curated by Yale at the Peabody Museum since their excavation by Hiram Bingham in From Cusco, descend to the Urubamba Valley to enjoy a variety of options including bicycling, horseback riding, hiking, white-water rafting, cooking lessons, and weaving demonstrations. Visit a local indigenous market and an Andean weaving project to see vicuna, guanaco, alpaca and llamas. Travel by train to the enchanting site of Machu Picchu. Here, comfortably lodged near the site, we ll be able to contemplate this Lost City of the Incas and explore its granite temples, altars, squares, and fountains. 3 Yale Study Leader Reader s Corner What To Expect This exclusive expedition is designed for Yale alumni and friends who are interested in archaeology, history, and the ancient cultures of Peru and its rich natural environment. The program is not limited to only those bringing children and offers activities and sightseeing that travelers of any age will find stimulating. Throughout Andean cities, temperatures range from F at night to F during the day and one should always be prepared for rain. Travel is by motor coach, boat, regularly scheduled jet planes, and train. This is a moderately active program that is, at times, busy. Daily programs involve one to two miles of walking, often over uneven terrain, at a leisurely pace. There are activities for young ones and the young at heart including swimming with sea lions, nature walks, bird watching and more. There is some stair climbing and at many ruins stairs do not have handrails. In the Andes travelers spend several days at elevations from approximately 8,000 to 11,200 feet. The tour has been planned to allow for gradual acclimatization when traveling to the Andean highlands. The group initially stays in the Valley at approximately 8,000 feet and continues on to Machu Picchu at 7,600 feet, leaving the higher elevations of Cusco for the end after acclimatization. Lima, the capital of Peru, is at sea level. Highlights Elihu Rubin Elihu Rubin 99 is Associate Professor of Architecture and Urbanism at Yale. Passionate about cities in all their dimensions, from the smallest architectural detail to the broadest urban patterns, Professor Rubin enjoys sharing his perspective on the connections between the built environment and the culture of cities. He has made documentary videos on topics relating to urban history, the politics of public space, urban redevelopment, architectural modernism, and street life. He is the author of Insuring the City: The Prudential Center and the Postwar Urban Landscape, a study of urban planning, development, and design in mid-century America. He is currently working on a book about preservation, heritage, and tourism, themes he plans to explore during this exciting trip. He has previously accompanied several YET programs and looks forward to another inspiring experience in Peru, exploring all its beauty and mystery with Yale alumni and friends. 4 Itinerary U.S. / Lima Friday, December 23 Depart the U.S on a flight to Lima, the capital of Peru. Transfer to hotel. Casa Andina Private Collection Miraflores Lima Saturday, December 24 In the morning, transfer to the Regatas Club at Callao (Lima s Port). Here, cruise to the Palomino Islands, inhabited by hundreds of sea lions and guano birds. The adventurous among us have a chance to swim with sea lions. Those who don t want to swim with the sea lions depart on a culinary excursion to the market of the chefs. Lunch is at a restaurant with a superb view of the Pacific Ocean. In the afternoon visit the Larco Museum, which displays collections of beautifully modeled pottery vessels, unique gold and silver work, and ancient mummies. Afterwards, drive through Colonial Lima, declared an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Admire the churches, promenades and palaces that reflect Peru s Spanish heritage. Gather this evening for a special Christmas Eve dinner. Casa Andina Private Collection Miraflores (B, L, D) Lima / Cusco / Urubamba Sacred Valley of the Incas Sunday, December 25 Depart on a morning flight to Cusco. Transfer to your hotel located in Urubamba known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Visit Awana Kancha, a weaving project of Andean communities, to see the four kinds of American camelidae (alpaca, llama, vicuña, and guanaco) and to learn about fine wools and ancestral weaving techniques. Continue to the village of Pisac, known for its colorful Indian market. After lunch, the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the facilities of the hotel including a swimming pool and a spa. Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness (B, L) Urubamba Sacred Valley of the Incas Monday, December 26 After breakfast, transfer north to Chequereq to start a biking ride adventure towards the agricultural archaeological site of Moray. Then, visit the fortress of Ollantaytambo, the last Inca living town where ancient agricultural terraces are still in use today and see native residents in colorful dresses. Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness (B, L) Urubamba Sacred Valley the Incas Tuesday, December 27 Today, drive to the Inca Village of Chinchero, where the views of the Urubamba Valley and the Vilcabamba Mountains are spectacular. The main plaza, the nearby ruins and the craft market are some of Chinchero s main attractions. Lunch at Rancho Wayra followed by an exhibition of Paso Fino Horses and Marinera, a typical dance. Optional horseback riding this afternoon. Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness (B, L) Urubamba / Piñipampa / Urubamba Wednesday, December 28 Drive to Huambutio (Piñipampa) to begin river rafting down the Urubamba River, a unique experience which combines the excitement of the river with beautiful landscapes. An alternative activity, will be offered to those not wishing to go rafting. In the afternoon, visit the workshop of Pablo Seminario, a famous ceramist and former architect who uses ancient Inca techniques to recreate reproductions and original ceramics. Novotel Cusco (B, L) Cusco Saturday, December 31 Located high in the Andes at 11,155 feet, Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire and the oldest continuously inhabited city in South America. This morning visit the renowned fortress and religious site of Sacsayhuaman. Here, massive stone blocks were fitted together so tightly, without mortar, that a knife blade cannot be inserted between them. After lunch, tour the bohemian quarter of San Blas known for its attractive narrow streets, Main Square, ateliers and handicraft shops. In the afternoon, visit the famous Santo Domingo Church on what was, during the Inca Empire, the Temple of the Sun or Koricancha in Quechua. Special visit to the UNSAAC-YALE International Center for the Study of Machu Picchu and Inca Culture. At the Yale Center see displays of the archaeological pieces that Hiram Bingham found in Machu Picchu and were originally housed at Yale University. Special New Year s Eve Dinner at the hotel.
