Parents will understand hw the Cmmn Cre Learning Standards differ frm traditinal NY educatinal standards and what this will mean fr their children. 2. Parents will understand hw they can supprt their children at hme and be mre invlved in the transitin t Cmmn Cre. ELA Shifts Main Presenter Intrduce ELA/Literacy shifts We re ging t start with ELA/Literacy. As yu can see here, there are six very specific shifts yur children are ging t experience as a result f the new standards Read the list f shifts, pausing t explain each ne Pause fr questins Prepare fr next set f slides: Each f these shifts result in sme new skills that yur children will have t build in rder t succeed in schl they dn t really have a chice. Fr parents we have identified sme very specific strategies yu can and we believe, shuld adpt t really help yur children d their very best. All f these items and sme thers are listed n the Wrking with the Shifts handut, which I urge yu t read carefully. These are by n means the nly ways yu can help yur children, but these are sme ideas. If yu have thers, please share them. 4 fictin This is particularly significant in elementary schls, where fictin has always been the nrm But nn-fictin has gtten a bad rap, and the reality is that there are a lt f entertaining, interesting nnfictin bks ut there fr every grade level, yu just have t be willing t cnsider them. Take a lk at the list f nn-fictin bks in yur packet. Wrk with a partner at yur table t identify a cuple that will be f greatest interest t yur kids. Once yu, think abut hw yu can get them interested in reading them and what yu can d t help them alng. Perhaps mst imprtantly, cnsider the third questin hw ften, and under what circumstances, d yu let yur children see YOU read? Give participants 4-5 minutes t discuss, then call n parents at different tables arund the rm. Intrduce the Math Shifts Pint ut that with math, ne f the biggest changes is the fcus n fewer cncepts, allwing teachers t delve mre deeply int each ne Yu may hear peple talking abut math as being abut teaching mre abut less. That sunds weird, but it s really true. The traditinal US apprach is t cver everything acrss all grades, frm kindergarten thrugh high schl. This was a lt t cver, and a lt f students maybe sme f yu in this rm gt lst alng the way. The thery behind the new standards is that by fcusing n fewer standards verall, teachers will be EngageNY.rg 4

5 Math Shifts 1-6 Activity: Finding Math in Everyday Life able t get int mre detail, wrk clsely with students n different cmpnents f each cncept, and help them t nt nly figure ut hw t d the math, but understand hw and why it wrks. Part f this will be thrugh the use f writing in math students will need t write abut hw they gt their answer and why it wrked. Anther piece f this will be thrugh assignments that ask them t answer the same questin in different ways. The answer will always be the same, but students will be asked t use different appraches t get there. Any questins n these six shifts? Pause briefly fr questins. The trick is finding ways t invlve ur kids in this everyday math This lets them practice the skills they re learning in schl, but even mre imprtantly, let s them see that the math they re learning is cnnected t and useful in the real wrld.
