1 Date: 13 & 14 February 2016 GKidz Barnabas Club 2016 Chinese New Year Party - REUNION Objectives: To know that God wants to have a reunion with us, just like how families want to have reunions during the Chinese New Year festive season. Personnel needed: 2 Games Hosts dressed either in festive wear or festive colours. Programme: Time Activity I/C 5 Welcome TL 10 Introduction & Offering TL 50 No Logistics Needed. Reunion Games o Game #1: Family Telephone (10 ) Preparation: 1. Each service is to come up with 5 phrases that will be used as telephone messages to pass down the row. The phrases should describe the leaders in the service. E.g. Pastor Pui Leng has 3 adorable nephews and 2 sweet nieces. (TL to gather the sentences.) 2. Appoint one leader at the beginning and one leader at the end of each row when the game starts. 3. The leader at the end of the row should award points. Each correct answer will earn 5 points. Wrong answer will have no points awarded. o Game #2: Guess the Baby Contest (15 ) o Game #3: Tuan Yuan Fun! (10 ) o Game #4: CNY Challenge (15 ) Logistics Needed: Baby photos of 6 leaders in PowerPoint slides (TL to prepare) No Logistics Needed. Logistics Needed: 1. 5 Red plastic bags for making plastic flowers (GKidz will provide) -- Leaders to learn how to make the flowers from the following link red packets for making lanterns (GKidz will provide) See Annex A 1

2 3. 4 pieces of red paper for writing CNY well wishes, marker (GKidz will provide) 福 -nata Challenge Lo-hei Dismissal Logistics: Pinata and Stick (GKidz will provide) Please hang the Pinata up before the service starts. Logistics: Paper plates, chopsticks, table sheet (GKidz will provide) NA A. Script for Introduction, Offering and Reunion Games (50 ) Introduction Host 1: Here s wishing everyone 新年快乐, 万事如神意! Host 2: I would like to wish everyone 学业进步, 快 高长 大! Offering Script Host 1: I love Chinese New Year because this is a time for REUNION. Host 2: What is REUNION? Host 1: According to the dictionary, it is described as an instance of two or more people coming together again after a period of separation. For example: "she had a tearful reunion with her parents" Host 2: I thought Chinese New Year is about wearing bright and red clothes, receiving ang baos and eat and eat and eat and eat? Host 1: It is also a time of REUNION. It is a time for those who are married and not staying with the family and those who are overseas to return home to reunite with their family members. And the iconic gathering will be the reunion dinner. Everyone will eat together, catch up with one another about their lives, and even play together! Host 2: I see. So, for most people, Chinese New Year Reunion Dinner is about re-uniteing with family members. Do you know that we can have a Reunion with God too? Host 1: What do you mean? Is God inviting us for REUNION dinner too? Host 2: No, it is not about the dinner, but I mean God loves the fact that all His creation return to Him and and know that He loves them very much. And especially for those who have been separated from Him, He wants a reunion with them! 2

3 Host 1: Why are they separated from God? Host 2: They are separated because some of them never know that God is the Creator and they belong to Him! So they are lost Then, some of separated because they are like those prodigal children who leave the family. Host 1: Who is a prodigal child? Host 2: A prodigal child is one who seeks to leave his or her family in order to do something that the family disapprove of and has now returned home feeling sorry for what he or she has done. But it is not just the sons, some daughters are like that as well. Host 1: What is something that God the Creator disapprove of? Host 2: That is disobedience and sin. When we don t acknowledge God as the Creator, it is like not acknowledging that our father is our father! That s being rebellious and disobedient. And that is sin against God. And you know what happens when sin comes into our lives? Sin is from the dark side, it destroys us and fills us with darkness. But God doesn t want His creation, all His sons and daughters to be separated from Him because of sin. Host 1: I see God wants to be reunited with His prodigal child, all of them! Host 2: That s right. And every Chinese New Year, when we see the word 福, it is a reminder that God wants to bless us and He wants us to be reunited with Him. Host 1: Why 福? Host 2: The Chinese character means BLESSED. If we dissect the word into three parts, this is what it means. a. The left hand side means GOD ( 示 shi4 字 zi4 旁 pang2) b. The one stroke ( 横 heng2) and the mouth ( 口 kou3) on the top means ONE MAN c. The bottom one means IN A GARDEN ( 田 tian2) In all, God created the first man, Adam. He represents human kind. He was allowed to live in the Garden of Eden where he was blessed with all the things that he needed to stay alive and be happy. God wanted to give this true happiness and blessing to human beings that He created. It started with the very first man. It is a supreme joy given by God as described in the Chinese character. It is a joy that is independent of one s situation, it s a joy that comes about because we have peace with God. The next time you see the character 福, remember that it is not just about ang baos, oranges and feasting all our favourite food. It is a time to 3

4 remember that God wants to be with us, just like the way He was with Adam at the start of creation. Host 1: That s so cool! Chinese New Year Reunion with God and receiving His 福 blessing! Host 2: Let s start today s celebrations with a thanksgiving prayer and giving our tithes and offering to God! (Host 2 to pray and faciliate collection of offering.) Host 1: Since Chinese New Year is a time for REUNION, let s have a REUNION celebration at GKidz today! Host 1: Ok! Who are the friends who came specially to celebrate Chinese New Year with us today? (Invite the visitors to wave.) We are like one GKidz family here, we hope you will feel at home with us! Introduction to Games Host 2: Let s break the ice by playing the Family Telephone. (Game #1) The game is also known as "Chinese Whispers" or "Broken Telephone." This is a classic game that many of us played as kids. With a family twist added, it makes a great pastime for a reunion. The idea is to see how much a sentence is distorted as it is whispered from one person to another to another. In the family version, a fact about a family member or about the family in general is the message that travels the "telephone." So we are going to share with you things about the GKidz family members through this telephone. All of you will sit with your group in a straight row. A leader will whisper onesentence phrases to the first child in the row.. and you must pass the message down the row till it reaches the last person. Here s the catch! All the phrases are about your leaders in this service. Host 1: Sounds fun! Should we give points to the groups that has the perfect family telephone? Host 2: Of course! There will be 3 games where we will awards points for every group. These points will be used later!! Instead of gathering around the steamboat for REUNION dinner, we we will have a gathering around the Chinata for our REUNION. The number of points each group has will be the number of chances they have to have a hit at the Chinata. Host 1: Ok! I am ready for Family Telephone! Let s start now! Host 2: Let s pass the first message. (Do this for 5 messages.) (Have one leader tally all the scores on a PowerPoint Slide.) Host 1: That was fun and now we know more about our GKidz leaders! 4

5 Host 2: The second game is about REUNION too. Very often, families dig out the old photos of themselves and talk about the good and funny memories from the past. So now, we will do the same. We will play a Guess the Baby Contest. Host 1: So who do we have for Guess the Baby Contest? (Game #2) (6 leaders walk onto the stage as contestants.) Host 1: What? These babies are huge! Hahaha! Host 2: Listen carefully, this is how this game works. We are going to show photos of 7 different babies on the screen and you are supposed to guess which baby photo is the baby version of the leaders on stage. You will not be awarded points for this game but I am sure you will have lots of fun playing this game! Let s start now! (Host 2 will facilitate the guessing game. Have the children raise their hands for a chance to make a guess. Award every child who guess correctly with a prize.) Host 1: That was fun! I have another fun game for everyone! A hot favourite for Reunion dinner is STEAMBOAT. This is especially popular in China as it gets very cold during the Chinese New Year period. Now we are going to play a game called Tuan Yuan Fun! (Game #3) Everyone will be the different ingredients for the Steamboat according to their age and gender: P4 fishball P5 cabbage P6 chicken Girls mushroom Boys prawns Leaders sea Cucumber When the games host calls the different ingredients e.g. If he/she calls cabbage, all the P5s must switch places within their small groups. If the games host calls mushrooms, all the Barnabas girls must change places across their small groups. If the game host calls out Steamboat then everyone must change places, that means all of you have to go to a different group! Host 1: ok, I am ready. I love steamboat, I want to call out the names of the different ingredients. (Host 1 to call for various ingredients randomly. The last name should be Steamboat to have everyone go back to their original seats. ) Host 2: That was a massive steamboat we had! 5

6 Host 1: I have a last game for everyone to gain points. When family members gather together, they make things together to decorate their homes! This is the CNY challenge (Game #4) for every group Make 7 red plastic flowers (2 points per flower) Make 1 lantern with red packets (5 points per lantern) Write 4 sets of CNY well wishes (2 points per set) You have 15 minutes to complete as many items as you can! The time starts now! (show slide) (Group leaders will gather the children and involve everyone to make the items. Host 1 & 2 will give running commentary as they split up and move around from group to group..when the 15 minutes is up, each group will present their items and points will be awarded accordingly. If possible, set up a corner in the room to display the works of the groups. ) Host 2: Now that we have earned all our points, we are ready for the final Challenge. God wants to bless us abundantly and it looks a bit like the way snacks pour out of a piñata when it is opened! We have one right here today, specially made for this Chinese New Year celebration with 福 on it it is called 福 -nata! As we go for our snack time, watch out for what is going to happen at the Chi-nata Challenge. Each group will be sending out representative to hit the Chi-nata to see who can break it open. B. 福 -nata Challenge (20 ) Host 1 and Host 2 will faciliate this challenge. Every 1 point allows one representative from each group to hit the Chinata. With every hit, whatever snacks that come out from the 福 -nata goes to the group that is hitting it. The challenge ends when the everything in the 福 -nata has been emptied. C. Hey Hey, let s Lo Hei! (20 ) Logistics: Paper plates, chopsticks, tablecloths (GKidz will provide) Snacks for Lo Hei (Leaders to provide) Instructions: Leaders and children to bring CNY goodies and share with their group or do Lo Hei with the group, e.g. cuttlefish, crackers, chips, bak kwa.
