1 ArgoNurse Newsletter University of West Florida Nursing Department (850) Fall Issue Volume 1, Issue 1 Special Interest Academic Partnership with Baptist Hospital New faculty members bring fresh insight and experience Expansion of Nursing Program Residency Program with Baptist Hospital The UWF Department of Nursing has teamed with Baptist Health Care in Pensacola to create a new nursing residency program. Aimed to offer quality experiences for UWF nursing students, Baptist predicts the residency program will promote a closer working relationship between the hospital and its future employees. Senior nursing students enter the hospital as patient care assistants and gradually increase their scope of practice and skills under nursing supervision. The plan is to create a seamless transition once the seniors graduate from UWF. The students are actively engaged and see themselves growing their careers here, says Holly Kolozsbary, BSN, RN, Director of Clinical Education at Baptist Health Care. As the student s rotate through different areas of the hospital they are not only exposed to the different styles and specialties of nursing they are also introduced to the hospital s culture. It is expected that student participants will experience A Long-distance Relationship higher levels of engagement with the hospital, selfefficacy, critical thinking, and job satisfaction, says Dr. Ermalynn Kiehl, nursing department chair and associate professor at UWF. As a result of the residency program experience, Baptist expects they will employ a better prepared graduate nurse which will ultimately improve patient care. With plans to accept more students into the program at both Baptist locations; downtown and in Gulf Breeze, the future of the residency program looks extremely promising. Maternal Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy is devoted to developing and preparing the leadership skills of maternal child health nurses & nurse midwives who hold positions of influence. Dr. Kiehl provides mentorship to Ellee Humphrey, MSN, RN, Nurse Manager of Labor and Delivery/Ante Partum at Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville, KY. She and Ellee created a leadership development plan for implementation of immediate kangaroo care for newborns. Dr. Kiehl s 39-year-career in maternal child health is instrumental as this intense and career-changing experience allows upcoming nurses to take the lead in making improvements in maternal child health. This relationship is the result of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) and Johnson & Johnson Corporate Contributions. Joanne Fillweber, Manager of Corporate Contributions at Johnson & Johnson says, "We are dedicated to improving the quality of patient care by supporting development of nurse leaders who can influence practice and patient outcomes. Dr. Kiehl says she is, honored to have the privilege of participating in cultivating leadership and management skills in the next generation of leaders.
2 2 ARGONURSE NEWSLETTER Teaching Strategies go to Orlando Dr. Angela Blackburn, UWF assistant professor and an expert in healthcare ethics, was selected to present at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing 2013 Master's Education Conference in Orlando Florida. Her topic for presentation consisted of "Using Book Clubs and Film in Teaching Graduate Nursing Students Concepts of Research Ethics." Dr. Blackburn shared her strategies to advance the knowledge required in preparing graduate level nurses for their new role in an ever changing health care environment.. As a member of the Sacred Heart Hospital Ethics Committee, Dr. Blackburn is a valuable resource to the UWF nursing department. Her ethical expertise enhances the UWF graduate students and faculty evaluation and resolution skills regarding ethical issues. Caring for Urban Residents One benefit of being student in the BSN nursing program is the opportunity to provide service to the local community. In February, the junior and senior nursing students conducted many health screenings, that included blood pressure checks, and provided education regarding prevention and management of hypertension to the residents of the Moorings apartment complex located in Pensacola. Furthermore, the nursing students lead aerobic activities with children who reside at the Moorings to promote healthy lifestyles. The UWF nursing students have committed to continue their relationship with the Moorings residents and are already planning the 2014 visit. 3 3 Those Red, White, and Blue's Last year Ms. Linda Tibbits, RN to BSN coordinator, attended the American Association of Colleges of Nursing annual baccalaureate conference. The UWF RN to BSN program was compared to similar institutions across the US and compared very favorably in regards to maintaining high standards of education during our recent period of growth. While attending the conference, Ms. Tibbits gained a keen awareness of the need to focus care efforts for our military veterans. This includes a very large population of people with very special needs related to the stresses of war and altered family dynamics. Pensacola is strategically located in an area that includes seven military bases with a Veterans Affairs clinic within 15 miles of our main campus. Ms. Tibbits has expressed passion in caring for these servicemen and women in our area and is working on ways on how best to meet their unique healthcare needs. As she explores new avenues for UWF to expand and strengthen its service to the military veteran population, we encourage you to join us in our efforts. Healthcare simulation facilitates the nursing student s education by increasing their assessment skills, and clinical reasoning. Through low and high fidelity technology, students can learn through a simulated experience any patient situation that can vary from simple to very complex. As a member of the Florida Healthcare Simulation Alliance, UWF expects to strengthen the use of simulation in the application of the knowledge to improve patient outcomes. UWF nursing department is currently exploring grant opportunities to expand the high fidelity nursing simulation lab on the UWF Pensacola campus. The simulation center has been named the Nursing Skills & Simulation Learning (NSSL) Center. The NSSL center will employ the use of technology to enhance the quality of the education for every level of nursing student at UWF.
4 4 ARGONURSE NEWSLETTER Camille Wilson, MSN, RN Bringing experience and Camille is originally from Austin Texas. Camille recently graduated with her MSN from a Angelo State University. Camille and family have relocated to Navarre; she is thrilled to be a part of the UWF nursing department. She has a passion for perioperative nursing and hopes to bring her passion and dedication to quality nursing education to the talented nursing faculty team here at UWF. Her plans for the future are to continue to grow as a nurse educator and become an accredited educator through the National League of Nursing. She furthermore demonstrates her commitment to nursing as she plans to one day continue her education onto the doctoral level. fresh perspectives Jill Van Der Like, MSN, RNC to UWF, meet the new nursing faculty members! Jill is from Pensacola and is proud to be the first graduate of the UWF MSN program. She is privileged to be implementing simulation into UWF s traditional BSN curriculum. Jill has a passion for obstetrics and mental health and is a member of IMPACT 100 Pensacola Bay Area and a Guardian ad Litem volunteer. She hopes to bring quality and safety to the clinical setting through simulation instruction. Jill s future plans include increasing the total number of simulation hours per semester and online instruction in the RN to BSN program. Janet Niemi Chubb, DHS, MS, RN Janet lives in Fort Walton Beach, FL but is originally from Billings Montana. She earned a BS in Nursing from Idaho State University, her MS is in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Utah, and her DHS was awarded from Nova Southeastern University with a focus on health policy, leadership, and education. She is currently working with the Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce on the Community Solutions Committee developing a strategic plan to address the homeless population in her community. Her professional career has included both academia and service in the hospital and healthcare arena. Her passion is team development, leadership and decision making specific to healthcare professionals and systems. Dr. Chubb is an instructor for the Leadership and Management track students of the MSN program.
5 5 Lela Hobby-Burns, DNP, MSN, APHN-BC Dr. Hobby-Burns earned her BSN at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta Georgia; her MSN in Family Health at the University of San Diego; and her DNP in Public Health Nursing at the University of Massachusetts. Lela is a board-certified Advanced Practice Public Health Nurse and has a research interest is preventive oral health care in children. She has implemented populationbased programs and policies for the pre-school age children in the past and teaches public health nursing, nursing systems management and research. Lela is currently an online instructor in the RN to BSN program as well as a clinical instructor for the traditional BSN students. She enjoys both online and live instruction. She and her husband recently moved to Pensacola from Massachusetts. She is a proud parent of two sons who are currently in the U.S. military. She enjoys biking, swimming, paddle-boarding, jogging, yoga, and travelling. Lela looks forward to contributing to the UWF mission. implemented populationbased programs and policies for the pre-school age children in the past Faith Garrett, Ed.D, APN-BC, CNE Dr. Garrett, assistant professor earned her BSN from Florida Southern College; her MSN was awarded form the University of Central Florida and her Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Garrett has been a nurse since 1983 and is very passionate about her profession. For the past 12 years she has specialized in nursing academia at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels. Dr. Garrett also bring the experience of serving as the founding dean and chair at two Georgia academic institutions. Her primary research interests in lesbian health and spirituality in nursing. She looks forward to a long and happy relationship with the university, faculty, and the division of nursing here at UWF. Tina Marie Majors DNP, ARNP, ANP-BC Dr. Majors joined UWF as an Assistant Professor in Nursing. Prior to coming to UWF, she was employed for 17 years as a Nurse Practitioner specializing in diabetes for the Department of Veterans Affairs. She previously held an adjunct faculty position at South University. Tina received her BSN from Florida Southern; MSN from University of Florida; and DNP from the University of South Alabama. As her primary research interests are related to diabetes, she specifically has interests in the utilization of motivational interviewing to assist people to make healthy behavior changes. Tina resides in Pace with her dog, Jack and her cat, Mr. Kitty. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, cooking, and kayaking. Tina will be developing the DNP program at UWF, and is also teaching in the undergraduate program.
