The opportunities for postgraduate study within the faculty build on both a strong tradition of teaching and learning and a dynamic staff and student research culture. We encourage and foster cross- and interdisciplinary research and practice and value both traditional and practice-based forms of scholarship. There are two main ways to continue your educational and professional development at postgraduate level. Both are available to study on either a part-time or full-time basis. You may pursue either postgraduate research leading to either an MPhil/PhD or an MRes, or a taught postgraduate MA/PgDip programme. Our MRes Architectural History may be an end in itself for a researcher or professional historian in the heritage sector, or a stepping stone to further postgraduate research. All postgraduate students in the faculty benefit from a programme of research skills training, professional development workshops, symposia, guest lectures and staff/student seminars. The university adopts an ethical and sustainable attitude to architecture and the built environment. A postgraduate teaching and research agenda has been developed through close contacts with architectural and other building and environment-related professionals both in the south-west of England and at national and international levels. These have led to the development of programmes and research in response to the need for the conservation of the existing environment together with a sustainable approach to development. The Plymouth and Design Society (PADS) runs a popular programme of talks, film screenings and social events. Postgraduates may also take advantage of study space at Saltram House, an 18th-century country house on the outskirts of Plymouth with interiors by Robert Adams. The research opportunities within are detailed on the following page. In addition to these, also has close relationships with other Design disciplines in the (see Art, Design & Media section of the prospectus), as well as with the internationally recognised Art History department (see Humanities). 28

4 RESEARCH and Design Research Group Contact: Research and Graduate Affairs Office The and Design research group specialises in the theoretical and practical investigation of the following areas: regionalism, identity, place and tradition; re-appropriation of urban space; architectural history; British Modernism; sustainability in architecture and design thinking; design knowledge and business connectivity; innovation and materials in design; contemporary earthen architecture and architectural conservation. The group benefits from close connections with the Centre for Sustainable Futures, a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Members of the and Design research group also co-ordinate the Centre for Earthen (CEA), which was founded in The centre s focus is the conservation of indigenous building materials, one of which is earth used locally as cob. Activities related to earthen architecture have grown to include consultancy, outreach and documentation with the support of DEBA (Devon Earth Building Association), English Heritage and ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites). CEA s consultancy includes Cobtun, Worcester, a house by Associated Architects, and winner of an RIBA Award 2005 and RIBA Sustainability Award 2005; Woodside, Merton, Devon, a house by Bedford & Jopson; and Avon Wildlife Headquarters, Chew Magna. These may fulfil CPD requirements of several of the built environmentrelated professions in preparation for accreditation Programme validated by IHBC Study location Plymouth Architectural Conservation The programme is made up of taught modules leading to a PgDip, which aim to equip a practitioner with the knowledge and skills to undertake the conservation of buildings/places. This is followed by an MA dissertation; an opportunity for independent study in an area of students interest. Award MA Duration MA: 1 year full time or 3 years part time/pgdip: 2 terms full time or 2 years part time Entry requirements PgDip: degree or equivalent, or professional qualification, eg architect/ surveyor/engineer/planner. A lower qualification with experience may be acceptable. IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. MA only: PgDip Architectural Conservation or equivalent. Tel: +44 (0) artspostgrad@plymouth.ac.uk The PgDip stage has seven key objectives: to enhance the understanding of the legislative framework related to architectural conservation to develop an understanding of the attitudes and philosophies which underpin conservation to further skills in observation, recording, analysis, understanding and evaluation of historic buildings and places so that students become more knowledgeable of, and sensitive towards, the built environment, particularly in the South West to emphasise conservation as a design activity and develop skills to judge better the nature of intervention and to increase design awareness of the appropriate professionals to increase the knowledge of techniques for care and repair to explain the role of the many experts and specialists in the field of conservation to prepare participants for professional accreditation in Architectural Conservation The MA stage has four key objectives: to provide an opportunity for students to pursue a topic of their own interest in depth to develop deeper understanding of the research process through a research project to generate research-based knowledge of relevance to architectural conservation; policy and practice within the work settings and/or the wider community to develop the skills which will enable students to take leadership roles in relation to research and practice in the future Programme content PgDip: Evaluation of historic buildings; attitudes and philosophies of conservation; techniques of conservation; framework of conservation; care and repair of cob buildings; care of ecclesiastical buildings; interiors of historic buildings; conservation areas; conservation of historic gardens. MA: 15,000 20,000-word dissertation 30

6 TAUGHT PROGRAMMES Master of This programme enables students to develop relevant abilities, knowledge, skills, thinking and understanding required at the RIBA/ARB Part 2 level; develop strategies for continued learning and development for their future role as architects; and explore and further define their own ethos and that of the School of and Design. Special features Articulating in the public domain architecture responsive to people, place and tectonics Live project-based studio work, set in overseas contexts in final year Study location Plymouth Our work is grounded in a respect for people, place and the craft of building and tests this work in the public domain through live projects in the design studio. The programme structure is built around the design studio and core studies in conservation/sustainability, critical theory/urbanism and Professional Studies. The core studies are delivered in stage 1, leaving a more flexible timetable in stage 2, enabling students to synthesise their development in the design studio and a selected area of individual study. The programme is fully validated by RIBA (through 2012), and prescribed by ARB (scheduled for renewal in 2009), and is a continuation of the fully accredited BA (Hons) (Part 1) course. A fully validated and prescribed Part 3 programme (CAPP) is also delivered. This programme supports the development of independent interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research in landscape, developing your conceptual understanding whilst preparing you for PhD research. Award MRes Duration 1 year full time or 2 years part time Entry requirements 2:1 or above honours degree in a relevant subject (eg cultural geography, art, photography, heritage, architecture). Tel: +44 (0) artsresearch@plymouth.ac.uk The programme covers the spectrum of landscape research in the arts and cultural geography involving heritage, landscape perception, commodification and landscape values in urban, rural, coastal and marine settings. You will work with members of the Land/Water Research Group in the and landscape specialists in the School of Geography to develop an understanding of contemporary research methods and practice and to apply the relevant techniques in your own work. The location of the programme, in real landscapes of world heritage significance, gives additional stimulus and opportunity to your study. Early in the programme, you will begin a substantial independent research project, either as a written thesis or as a written work and as creative or professional practice, that responds to particular research questions concerned with real or imagined landscapes, for example through photography, fine art, sonic art, multimedia or design. You will attend and contribute to relevant symposia and seminars across the Arts, Sciences and Social Sciences. You will also study theoretical and conceptual approaches to postgraduate research in the arts and humanities generally. Workshops and seminars take place during the spring term and the programme is completed in July with the professional interview. Special features Prescribed by the ARB for purposes of entry onto the UK Register of Architects Assimilation of best practice Initiation of peer group dialogue in practice Development of a critical view of practice Initiation of CPD Study location Plymouth The programme s main objectives are: to build upon prior assessed PEDR training, prior to entry to Part 2 level of architectural studies to build upon prior learning at Part 1 and Part 2 levels of architectural studies to achieve understanding concerning the application of the principles of good architectural practice linked to proven competency to undertake the roles and responsibilities of a professional architect to achieve a working knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of architects with regard to the realisation of building design; the procurement of buildings; the architectural profession and the wider construction industry; issues impacting on the construction industry in the UK and Europe The programme manager provides tutorial support for practical training and the preparation of the diagnostic essays. Employer workplace supervision is also required.
