1 Capstones Curriculum Clinical Experiences During Medical School Basic Science Years

2 Capstones Objectives 1. Integrate clinical experiences into the basic science organ system blocks 2. Understand clinically relevant applications of the basic science of each basic science block content 3. Experience participation in an interprofessional team 4. Demonstrate and practice communication and professionalism 5. Understand issues from the patient, the patient's family and the physician related to interacting with the health-care delivery system...

3 Capstones Objectives, continued 6. Understand various venues and organizations available for patient diagnosis, assessment, support and treatment 7. Discuss ethical dilemmas faced by clinicians 8. Reflect on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of illness facing patients and their families 9. Reflect on the student's physical, emotional, mental and spiritual reactions to patient illness

4 Capstones Description Centered in Phoenix community clinical practices Multiple ½ day shadowing experiences over the course of one week Occurs approximately every 6 weeks, at the end of most integrated basic science curriculum blocks Capstone experiences offer medical students clinical application of and reflection on learning from the preceding block's curriculum Experiences also allow exposure to areas not directly taught in the Basic Science Block, such as forensic pathology/laboratory medicine.

Professionalism, as manifested through a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population 2. Interpersonal and Communication Skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with patients, their families, and other health professionals 3. Medical Knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and cognate (e.g. epidemiological and social-behavioral) sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care 5. Practice-Based Learning and Improvement that involves investigation and evaluation of their own patient care, appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence, and improvements in patient care 6. Systems-Based Practice* * Preceptors are encouraged to engage students in discussions regarding the above areas, but 1st & 2 nd year medical students are limited in their knowledge of the above, and should be assessed more on interest/enthusiasm for learning during discussions on these topics with Preceptors.

11 Expectations of Preceptors Show enthusiasm for teaching Be prepared Share information with office partners/staff to promote positive learning environment Ensure buy-in of all your staff and partners to having medical students rotate at practice site Ask questions of Capstone Director and Coordinator as needed

12 Completion of Capstone Experience Preceptors will be sent a brief evaluation survey ed at the end of each medical student encounter Feedback from students will be sent to Preceptors Preceptors will be given recognition certificates at the end of each year Preceptors may be eligible for adjunct faculty appointment, depending on the amount of time spent with medical students each year
