1 KING S HOUSE SCHOOL Newsletter 9 June 2016 Dear Parents It promises to be a busy second half of term and the excitements are already under way. Year 8 have been embarking on their Common Entrance examinations this week for their Senior Schools so good luck to them as they finish off with their final paper, Latin, this morning. Funnily enough, just as they are finishing their exams, I will be down in the Junior Department welcoming in next year s new Reception parents for their introduction to life at King s House, and so the cycle begins again! It was a real treat to be able to visit the JD earlier this week for their Art Exhibition. All the boys had contributed a piece with the themes of flowers and boats for different year groups. They had made a real effort and showed some wonderful talent too. All the pictures had been beautifully framed and it was like walking around a real gallery seeing all the works on display. It was lovely to see the boys showing their works to parents, friends and siblings so proudly. On the trips front, Year 7 headed off on a new Latin outing this week all the way to Bath to see the Roman baths. This was clearly a very interesting and Year 8 celebrating the end of Common Entrance Exams exciting trip for them, and great to see real examples of Roman works. The boys who took their scholarship exams have now finished an Ancient Greek course. I think it would be fair to say that the boys found it challenging and well done to Henry who won the prize for his performance over the two weeks. It s Sports Day tomorrow and we re all looking closely at the weather forecast at the moment it looks like we will be alright. Good luck to all those competing from our Butterflies in their dressing up race to the Year 8s in the Hoplitodromos! However, in the event it is deemed necessary to cancel the event a Clarioncall message will be sent at 7.50am tomorrow, Friday 10 June. If there is no message this means that sports day will go ahead as planned. If sports day is cancelled school will resume as normal. Inspection Report - I am pleased to be able to announce we finally have the report from our ISI inspection and we will be sending this out to parents early next week. Thank you for your patience with this, as I know a number of you have been asking about it. Reminder that the Year 6 & 7 Exam results will be on parent portal end of day tomorrow, Friday 10 June. 2 Notes from the Nursery Department A helping hand We all helped Mrs Robinson We love Birthdays Dear Parents We have been so incredibly busy in the Nursery this week. The Butterfly children have been rehearsing for Sports Day and their end of term performance. I think you will be in for a treat; the children have been amazing at listening to instructions, balancing bean bags and singing at the tops of their voices. What a talented bunch! The children have been looking at capacity and were working in teams to fill a bucket with water with a variety of containers. They quickly worked out that the pipettes were not the best option and using the jugs ensured you were more likely to win. They went on to repeat the experiment blind- folded so had to be fed instructions by their partner and led around the course. This was a lovely opportunity to explore language and our senses. Mrs Robinson had lots of helpers as she attempted the activity! In Caterpillar they have been thinking about Keeping Healthy. When asked what they thought that A very busy Juice Bar! meant Bethany replied Drink lots of water and eat apples. There was a very busy juice bar in action at one of the tables. The children were busy squeezing oranges and decanting it into little cups. Not only healthy, but also a super activity for developing little muscles and fine motor skills. Mufti Day Wednesday 15 th March - come to Nursery in red, white and blue and pop a soft toy in the donation box. We are also collecting any old toys in good condition for the toy tombola. 3 Notes from the Junior Department Dear Parents Just before half-term Year 1 went on a fabulous trip to Wakehurst Place, linked to their learning about lifecycles. As you can see from the photos, they potted their own sunflower seeds, worked out which parts of plants were edible and hunted for hidden treasures in the tall grass. Year 3 had the Hobgoblin Theatre Company in to give a live performance about life during the Second World War. They also broke into groups to explore the lives of some of the characters in the play. On Tuesday evening the hall was transformed into a stunning art exhibition, with masterpieces on sale from across the JD. It was lovely to see so many parents here and to welcome our Chair of Governors, Mr Graham Corbishley. Many orders have been placed and we are set to raise a good amount for King s House, Rwanda. All the boys have been preparing for Sports Day this week and we are very much looking forward to seeing everyone at the KH Sports Ground tomorrow. There will be ice lollies for the Nursery children after their races, with hamburgers and ice lollies for the SD and JD after theirs. Please remember that no dogs are allowed at the grounds.
