1 FAQs for NIC Drivers and Tools Universal model For the user facility, all the SparkLAN s NIC products have been designed to be installed in one way. Users have to run the Setup file and keep going with the Setup wizard to finalize the installations. Once the process has been completed, the Wireless NIC Tools and the Drivers libraries will all be installed. At this step, the user can plug the device in. No matter what kind of interfaces, if the OS is running correctly, the NIC should be detected and installed automatically. Q1: Why can t I use my network after successfully installing the NIC? This is a common question. Ans: After installing the NIC tools and drivers, you have to select which wireless network you would like to join. (This is for Infrastructure mode) The tools by default would not automatically join any wireless network unless it had been specifically configured. Check your IP configuration to troubleshoot. It depends on which OS you are currently using; tools such as winipcfg, ipconfig or ifconfig can show your current IP configuration. And would have to be modified if required. Q2: The wireless tools does not initialized Ans: This usually occurs when the NIC interface has a problem to be started. Please check the Device Manager of your current PC hardware status. For MS Windows 2000/ XP it can be found by clicking Start, Control Panel, System, and Hardware. The MS Windows XP has incorporated the wireless tools already though the SparkLAN Utility would no be launched to avoid conflict. Q3: What is the maximum distance between NIC and access point? Ans: The maximum distance is 35m~50m for indoor environment, and 300m for open space environment. Please be aware that that range is limited by the number of walls, ceilings, or other

2 objects that the wireless signals must pass through. Typical ranges vary depending on the types of materials and background RF noise in your home or office. Q4: How can I find the IP address of my Windows 2000 or XP? Ans: Step 1: Click on Start and select Run. Step 2: Type cmd then click OK. Step 3: From the Command Prompt, enter ipconfig. It will return your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. Step 4: Type exit to close the command prompt. Q5: How do I know if my network adapter is working or not? Ans: If the NIC is installed on a Microsoft OS, there would be a Device Manager to check if the device is properly installed. 1- Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters, check the NIC

If the NIC has Question mark or Yellow! mark, please remove existing driver and re-install it. 2- Check the current TCP/IP configuration Control Panel -> Network -> TCP/IP, select Properties -> IP Address, make sure the IP address setting and subnet mask are suitable for your network environment. 3- Run the PING command under command prompt to the Gateway address. Start -> Run -> type command or cmd On the command prompt run PING xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (gateway address) Q6: Does SparkLAN s NIC support Linux? Ans: Certainly. On our installation CD, the Linux driver is included for NIC which used Prism 2.5 chips set. The models that used Prism 2.5 are WL-360F, WL-382F, WL-311F. Q7: I would like to reinstall the Wireless PC Card drivers, How do I accomplish this? Ans: First you will have to remove the current driver. To do this you will have to complete the following steps: Go to Device Manager Locate the Wireless PC Card, right click and select Uninstall. Go to Start -> Programs -> Wireless Network -> Uninstall To have the PC Card redetected and installed you will need to: Reboot the computer and run Setup Wizard again. Q8: I got Error Code 10 after installing the device. Ans: According to Microsoft, the problem is due to the device cannot start correctly. Please, on the device properties page, perform the driver update action and point the path to c:\program Files\Sparklan Wireless xppro/reskit/prjk_dec_lgsc.asp Q9: How can I install my WL-211F for MS Windows XP? Ans: Please download the new released driver from the support page. Please use manual selection driver to detect the device.

4 Q10: I got Stop 0x000000D1 or DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0x0,0x0,0x0,0x0) on my MS Windows Ans: Parameters 1 - memory that is referenced 2 - IRQL 3 - value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation 4 - address that referenced memory According to Microsoft Web Site, this issue occurs when the Driver Verifier features is enable and the installed device driver made used of an improper address. Please remove the device and disable the Driver Verifier features. Q11: How do I configure WEP Key for 64/128 bits? Ans: Please Open the Wireless Tools that is provided after the installations. On the Profile Tab click New to create a new Profile. Then a window dialogue should appear as follow:

5 1 - Create a profile name, select the SSID that this profile should be used 2 - Select the WEP Key encryption value (64 or 128) the method of key (Hex or Alphanumeric) 3 - And finally input the encryption key. Please Note: that the same key should be previously input in the AP. Q12: Why I can t browse Internet web pages? Ans: This could be caused by many reasons. 1- Be sure that the current NIC is properly installed. Please refer to Q5 for more details. 2- Be sure that your current Internet connection is up. Please check it with your ISP 3- Be sure that your NIC has the correct TCP/IP configuration. Please refer to Q4 for more detail. Basically if all TCP/IP settings are correct, and the ISP confirms that Internet connection is up, then the problem may be at the Web-Browser settings. Please check at Proxy setting if it has. And try with some other Internet Services such as Ftp, on-line messenger etc. Q13: What should I do when I got a X.X/20 class IP? Ans: This potentially could be a DHCP server problem, please make sure that the

6 server is full functionally and run the ipconfig /renew command for Windows 2000 or winipcfg for Windows 9x and ME for renew the IP. Q14: Does WL-280F/WL-282F/WL-380F/WL-382F support USB 2.0? Ans: the interface version that is applied to theses models is Ver. 1.0 but as the USB 2.0 features support all previous versions, then no compatibility problem should appear. Q15: Does the SparkLAN s NIC is compatible with other wireless vendor? Ans: SparkLAN s products have been strictly followed by the Wi-Fi standard definitions and IEEE b definitions. If the other device is b compatible, then no problem should be detected.
