1 CST171 DB Management Approaches Page Database Management Approaches CST171 Distributed DBMS (DDBMS) (Page 1) Computers at various sites can be connected with communications network or network Distributed database a single logical database physically divided among networked computers Distributed database management system (DDBMS) supports and manipulates a distributed database Distributed DBMS (DDBMS) (Page 2) Contains a local database at each site Homogeneous DDBMS has the same local database at each site Heterogeneous DDBMS has at least two sites where the databases are different (fragments of tables may be located at site where they are accessed most frequently) Distributed DBMS (DDBMS) (Page 3) Computers in a network communicate through messages Access delay required for every message Fixed amount of time Communication time = access delay + (data volume / transmission rate) DDBMS Characteristics (Page 1) Location transparency users access data at remote site as easily as at the local site (not as quickly) To the user the database seems to be stored entirely at the local site Replication transparency if replicated data exists at more than one site, it should be updated at each site without the user being aware of it Users unaware of steps taken by DDBMS to update various copies of data Data replication creates update problems that can lead to data inconsistencies DDBMS Characteristics (Page 2) Fragmentation transparency DDBMS can divide and manage a logical object among various locations under its control (data fragmentation) Purpose of fragmentation is to place data at the site where it is most often accessed User should feel as though there is a single database (unaware of the fragmentation) DDBMS Advantages Local control of data Site manages resources with local issues in mind Increased database capacity Each site adds additional storage capacity System availability If a local database goes down, other sites unaffected Improved performance

2 CST171 DB Management Approaches Page Local data retrieved more efficiently DDBMS Disadvantages More complex update of replicated data (primary copy) More complex query process More complex treatment of shared update Local deadlock occurs at a single site in a distributed database while global deadlock involves multiple sites More complex recovery measures Two-phase commit one site acts as coordinator More difficult management of data dictionary Database design is more complex Rules for Distributed Databases (C.J. Date) Local autonomy No reliance on a central site Continuous operation Location transparency Fragmentation transparency Replication transparency Rules for Distributed Databases (Page 2) Distributed query processing Distributed transaction management Hardware independence Operating system independence Network independence DBMS independence Client/Server Systems (Page 1) Client/server architecture Server computer providing data to clients (back-end processor or back-end machine) Clients computers connected to a network and used by users to access data (front-end processor or front-end machine) Client/Server Systems (Page 2) Both the database and the DBMS run on a central server in a network A local workstation sends a request for data Common language on the server, usually SQL: Processes the request and Sends the workstation only the data needed, not entire files Examples: Oracle and MS SQL Server Client/Server Systems (Page 3) Two-tier architecture Server performs database functions Clients perform presentation functions

3 CST171 DB Management Approaches Page Fat client Thin client Three-tier architecture Clients perform presentation functions Database server performs database functions Application servers perform business functions and interface between clients and database server Client/Server Advantages (Page 1) More efficient since only the needed data is passed along the network cable Work may be distributed among several processors Workstations may be less powerful since the server handles most of the work Commands are the same as if they were running on the local workstation Client/Server Advantages (Page 2) Using SQL as a common language allows data to be retrieved from multiple networks and multiple platforms Greater level of security than if the file server stores the data and the DBMS is on the workstation Powerful enough so that many mainframe applications have been downsized to microcomputer platforms Advantages of Client/Server Systems Lower network traffic Improved processing distribution Thinner clients Greater processing transparency Increased network, hardware, and software transparency Improved security Decreased costs Increased scalability Web Access to Databases (Page 1) Internet and World Wide Web (or the Web) Web page a digital document on the Web Web server stores Web pages Web client computer requesting a Web page Each Web page has a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) the web address Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) the data communication method (protocol) used to exchange data on the Internet Web Access to Databases (Page 2) Web browser: computer program that retrieves a Web page from a Web client Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP): standard protocol for communication on the Internet Web pages usually created using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) Web Access to Databases (Page 3) Static vs. dynamic Web pages

4 CST171 DB Management Approaches Page Static Web pages: same content for all Web clients Dynamic Web pages: content changes in response to inputs and choices from Web clients Server-side extensions or server-side scripts Client-side extensions or client-side scripts Three-tier Web-based architecture Web clients Web server Database server XML (Page 1) HTML Describes content and appearance of Web pages Does not describe structure and meaning of data Extensible Markup Language (XML) Tags can define meaning and structure of data An XML document should begin with an XML declaration XML (Page 2) Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) Markup language based on XML Stricter version of HTML Defining structure, characteristics, and relationships of data Document Type Definition (DTD) XML schema Presentation of data Stylesheet Data Warehouses (Page 1) Relational DBMS's and online transaction processing is efficient for an organization's normal operation purposes Each transaction refers only to a small number of rows from tables in the database However extensive data analysis requiring summarization of large amounts of information is best performed by a data warehouse Data Warehouses (Page 2) A separate entity that contains highly consolidated and summarized data Contains read-only snapshots at a single point in time The data is refreshed periodically, usually daily or weekly Used in support of an organization s decision-making process Data Warehouses Online transaction processing (OLTP) systems Users use transactions when interacting with an RDBMS Data warehouse Subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant, nonvolatile collection of data in support of management s decision-making process Used for analysis of existing data

Codd) Multidimensional conceptual view Transparency Accessibility Consistent reporting performance Client/server architecture Generic dimensionality Rules for OLAP Systems(Page 2) Dynamic sparse matrix handling Multiuser support Unrestricted, cross-dimensional operations Intuitive data manipulation Flexible reporting Unlimited dimensions and aggregation levels Object-Oriented DBMS (Page 1) A DBMS in which data and the methods that operate on the data are encapsulated into objects An object is a unit of data and the actions that take place on that data Especially useful in graphic related data storage systems such as computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and geographic information systems (GIS) Object-Oriented DBMS (Page 2) Complex objects: graphics, drawings, photographs, video, sound, voice mail, spreadsheets, etc. RDBMSs store complex objects using special data types Binary large objects (BLOBs) Object-oriented DBMSs used with applications whose focus is on complex objects What Is an Object-Oriented DBMS? Object: set of related attributes along with associated actions Object-oriented database management system (OODBMS): database management system in which data and associated actions are encapsulated into objects Objects and Classes Represent each entity as an object rather than a relation List attributes vertically below object names

6 CST171 DB Management Approaches Page Follow each attribute by name of domain Objects can contain other objects An object can contain a portion of another object Methods and Messages Methods: actions defined for a class Defined during data definition process Executed when user sends a message to the object Inheritance Subclass Every occurrence of subclass is considered an occurrence of the class Subclass inherits structure and methods of the class Unified Modeling Language (Page 1) Used to model all aspects of software development for object-oriented systems Includes a way to represent database designs Class diagram: most relevant diagram type for database design Rectangles represent classes Lines joining classes represent relationships; called associations Visibility symbol indicates whether other classes can view or update value in attribute Unified Modeling Language (Page 2) Multiplicity: number of objects that can be related to an individual object Constraints Superclass Generalization: relationship between a superclass and a subclass Rules for OODBMSs (Page 1) Complex objects Object identity Encapsulation Information hiding Types of classes Inheritance Late binding Rules for OODBMSs (Page 2) Computational completeness Extensibility Persistence Performance Concurrent update support Recovery support Query facility Internet and Intranets Gives external access to an organization's databases
