1 Focus Group Research Strategies PHC 6725, CRN # (to be determined) January 2 6, 2013 (Wednesday Sunday) University of South Florida College of Public Health Lawton & Rhea Chiles Center, Room 108 Tampa, Florida COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is an intensive overview of focus group procedures in the public and non profit environment. Attention will be placed on question development, moderator skills, analysis strategies and planning critical logistical details of focus group interviews, and analyzing results of focus group interviews. The course will examine unique methodological characteristics of focus group interviews, identify emerging trends, and explore areas of appropriate and inappropriate use. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: Apply the processes and procedures for planning successful focus group studies; Develop the ability to skillfully moderate focus groups; Create workable and useful questions for focus group studies; and Implement several alternative strategies for analyzing focus group results. IF you DO want university credit, register through USF as you would for any other course (that requires a permit). Tuition for the course is determined by USF pricing strategies. (Ball park tuition for an in state student is $ fees.) Here is the link to USF College of Public Health s Academic Affairs. It is updated each semester, so if you are reading this early, the course may not show up. IF you DO NOT want university credit, register through the Office of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). (If you are not already on the CPD web page, go to click on Course Calendar on the left, and select January 2013.) Tuition for non credit students is $1200. NOTE: In order for this course to occur, a minimum number of non credit students are required to ensure its financial viability. There has not been a shortage of students in the past; the norm is to have a waiting list for the class. A decision will be made by mid November. If you desire the course as a non credit student, please do not delay in registering as it is your registration that factors into the decision. You may register and withhold payment until after an affirmative decision is made. (Payment will be requested right after an affirmative decision. If you are have not paid by December 3, 2012, your seat will be given to the next person on the wait list.) If you opt to pay at the time of registration, and the course is cancelled, you will be refunded the registration fee. If you are coming from out of town, don t purchase airfare until you hear from Bobbi Rose via e mail that the course is definitely on. CANCELLATION POLICY Cancellation requests must be made in writing ( is preferred) by December 3, Cancellations received on or before December 3 will be refunded, less a $50 administrative fee. Cancellations received after December 3 through December 31 will be refunded at 50%. Cancellations after December 31 or no shows will not be refunded. A substitution is allowed at no cost.

Parking Students coming from a distance may stay in any of the hotels listed on the next page, many of which offer complimentary shuttle service to the USF campus. If you drive a car on campus and are not already a student with a parking permit, you may purchase parking permits for the number of days that the course meets on campus by indicating as such on your registration form. Parking permits will be mailed to you, or picked up on the first day if that is your preference. Permits are needed for three days (Wednesday through Friday). You also have the option to purchase them from a vending machine in the parking lot; cost is $ tax, daily. Parking is noted by the thick blue arrow, and the building is noted by the thin red arrow.
