Additive Manufacturing (AM) = The process of joining materials to make three- dimensional solid objects from 3D model data 3D printing = Fabrication of objects trough the deposition of a material using a print head, nozzle, or other printer technology Now days 3D printing has become a standard term for additive manufacturing
4 WHAT IS 3D PRINTING? 3D printing is used to build physical models, prototypes, patterns, tooling components and production parts in various materials including plastic, metal, ceramics, and composites
5 SHORT HISTORY History of 3D printing starts from 1960s with early inventions Commercialisation of stereolithography (SLA or SL) in 1987 Since D printing has enjoyed consistent attention in the international press and financial magazines and trend continues
6 SHORT HISTORY Stereolithography Technique is based on process of using ultraviolet laser to harden liquid photopolymer to make solid 3D objects A computer drives the laser building desired object layer by layer

9 PROTOTYPING Prototypes are the most typical applications on 3D printing technologies including: Visual aids and presentation models Functional prototyping Fit and assembly testing Benefits: Prototyping used in iterative design process gives savings in lead times and costs
10 TOOLING Moulds and tooling inserts: Making of master patterns which are used to produce mould or die, e.g. from silicone rubber Making of actual tool or tooling inserts Benefits: Reduces number of steps in tool- making process saving costs and time
11 METAL CASTING Patterns for metal casting processes (sand/flask/investment casting): Patterns can be made out of various materials (e.g. wax or sand) Metal casting is used in many industries and in variety of shapes and sizes (e.g. jewellery industry, shipbuilding industry) Benefits: Technique saves money and lead times

16 ADVANTAGES OF 3D PRINTING Material types Variety of different materials can be deployed (plastics, metals, ceramics, and composites) Some processes build parts from multiple materials and distribute the material based on the location in the part Low- volume production Cost effective for low- volume productions Additive fabrication requires minimal setup and builds a part directly from the CAD model
