1 City of Pigeon Forge Police Department Position: The Pigeon Forge Police Department is accepting applications for Police Officer. Qualifications: Must be at least twenty one years of age and a U.S. citizen; possess a high school diploma or equivalent, possess or be able to obtain a valid Tennessee Drivers License, cannot have a felony conviction or a conviction involving gambling, sale of alcohol or driving while intoxicated. Special Requirements: Must reside in Sevier County, TN within one year of date of hire. Additional requirements, testing information, hiring process information and salary ranges are included in the application packet. 3 CITY OF PIGEON FORGE POLICE DEPARTMENT Position: The Pigeon Forge Police Department is accepting applications for Police Officer Requirements: Must be at least 21 years of age Must be a citizen of the United States Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent Must possess or be able to obtain a Tennessee Driver s License Must not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances. (Note: The Peace Officer Standard and Training Commission may consider a waiver from pre employment requirements on an individual basis and depending on the circumstances excluding felony charge or domestic violence). Must have an Honorable discharge from the Armed Forces if prior military Must completely fill out an application for employment Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation and drug screen Must meet State law requirements concerning mental health and physical condition Special Requirements: Must reside in Sevier County, TN within one year of date of hire. NOTE: POLICE OFFICERS (PATROL DIVISION) WORK FOUR (4) TEN (10) HOUR SHIFTS (NIGHTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS) PERMANENT SHIFTS Benefits of Employment (In effect 07/01/09 and subject to change) Starting Salary: Non Certified Officer $35, (After 6 months and successful completion of the police academy, salary will be increased to $39,546.33) * Certified Officer $39, *POST Certified in the State of Tennessee Officers certified through another state are required to attend an 8 week Basic Training and will start out under Non Certified Officer pay plan 10 Vacation Days per year (15 days after five (5) years) 8 Paid Holidays per year (subject to change) 1 Sick day per month (maximum credit of 90 days) accrued 2 Personal Days per year Medical, Dental and Vision insurance package (includes family coverage) at no cost to the employee Employee life insurance benefit Deferred Compensation Uniforms/Equipment provided

4 Testing and Employment Process: As applications are received they will be reviewed to verify that they are completed in full and the requested documents are attached. Those applicants who complete the application as required will be eligible to proceed in the process and notified of the test date and time. Notification will be made either by e mail, phone call or written letter. Upon being advised of the test date you will need to confirm that you will or will not be able to participate. If you are not able to participate then your application for employment will not be considered at this time. If the applicant/application does not meet the requirements set forth then the applicant will not be qualified to proceed further and will be notified of such after the deadline for applications to be submitted. Notification will be made by written letter. All parts of the testing process are pass/fail. A written test and physical fitness test will take place on the same day. Physical Fitness Test: See attached physical fitness evaluation. Applicant must score 70% or better in order to continue on to the written test. Written Test: The National Police Officer Selection Test (POST) is an entry level basic skills test designed for law enforcement use, which measure these basic skills: Arithmetic, Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Incident Report Writing. Candidates must pass the exam with a score of 70% or better on each skill. The written tests will be graded as they are turned in. All candidates will be advised of their test scores. Applicants must score 70% or better on each skill. Those individuals who obtain passing scores will then be given a packet. This packet will contain information on the next phases in the selection process and a very detailed Personal History Statement. The applicant must complete and return the Personal History Statement as directed.

5 POLICE OFFICER REPORTS TO: Police Sergeant or Corporal NATURE OF WORK: Responsible for protection of the life and property of the citizens of Pigeon Forge, serving under the direct supervision of a field supervisor. The employee is expected to perform his or her duties according to state laws, city ordinances, and the policies and procedures of the police department. Instructions are somewhat general, but many aspects of the work follow standardized guidelines which frequently require use of independent judgment to complete tasks. EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION The employee will operate a variety of equipment including firearms, radio and communications equipment, police vehicles, motorcycles, radar, computer, and fingerprinting and emergency equipment. The demands of the job can be stressful both mentally and physically, requiring running, jumping, bending, climbing, crawling, squatting, lifting and carrying heavy objects up to fifty (50) pounds. The job will be performed both indoors and outdoors with the possibility of being exposed to adverse weather conditions and hazardous or extremely dangerous situations. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Internal: External: Significant interaction and coordination among co workers. The nature of the work requires that employees support each other for personal and public safety and to effectively and efficiently perform their duties and responsibilities. There is significant public contact, and the nature of the job is that many personal contacts are to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide service, to negotiate or settle matters, and to interrogate to obtain information. Often the public contacts are skeptical, uncooperative, hostile, frightened, or emotionally unstable, requiring considerable judgment in the use of force to control certain situations. EXAMPLES OF WORK: (The examples presented below may not include all of the duties which may be performed or required) Patrols, by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or motor vehicle, streets of the city, places of business, and residential districts enforcing city ordinances and state laws. Investigates suspected crimes, reports findings, and arrests suspected individuals. Processes arrestees and transports them to the Sevier County Jail.

6 Investigates accidents involving persons or property, reports probable cause of accidents, and pursues appropriate course of action. Answers dispatched calls. Directs and controls traffic. Testifies in court or legal proceedings. May issue parking tickets. Maintains all law enforcement equipment. Provides specialized instruction and makes presentations to school classrooms, community groups, and others. May assist other law enforcement departments or agencies with law enforcement activities. Responds to medical emergency calls performing emergency first aid. May provide animal control services. Operates a computer. Keeps records. May participate in the DARE and other intervention and community crime prevention programs. May provide field training when required. May serve as a School Resource Officer in a local public school. Performs related work as required. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the following: City ordinances and state and federal laws. Effective methods of investigation. The court system and presentation of evidence in court proceedings. The geography of the city. Basic methods of first aid. Ability to do the following: React quickly and calmly in emergency situations, and to determine the proper course of action. Ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and the examination of records. Explain and interpret pertinent provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations. Enforce laws firmly, tactfully, equally, and with respect for the rights of others. Develop the skills necessary in the proper use and care of firearms. Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees. Interact with the general public in a variety of circumstances, which are often stressful and/or dangerous. Understand and execute difficult oral and written instructions and guidelines. NECESSARY AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Tennessee driver's license. o Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: o Graduation from high school or completion of a GED. o Successful completion of a basic police training course within six months of employment. o Must meet the Minimum Standards POST Law (TCA ).
