1 Activity Description: Students correctly complete the Everyday Examples of Thermodynamics matching pieces and the Student Worksheet. Materials: 1 Student Attachment: Student Worksheet (per student) 1 Student Attachment: Everyday Examples of Thermodynamics Worksheet (per group) 1 Student Attachment: Reflection, Refraction, and Diffraction Worksheet (per student) 1 Student Attachment: Interference Worksheet (per student) 1 Student Attachment: Vocabulary Chart (per student) 1 Pencil (per student) Teacher Procedure: Before the start of the lesson, make sure that the listed materials and necessary Student Attachments are prepared. Prepare materials for the students in advance. Print the worksheets for each student before the session. Cut up the cards for the Everyday Examples of Thermodynamics Worksheet. Review criteria to look for common mistakes by students. 1. Give each group a copy of the Everyday Examples of Thermodynamics matching pieces in an envelope. Check the answers before the students continue with their worksheet. 2. Give each student the questions on the Student Worksheet. 1

5 Student Attachment: Student Worksheet (Key) Questions: 1. What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum? The electromagnetic spectrum is a range of electromagnetic waves that transfers radiation energy. 2. How are reflected waves and refracted waves different? Reflected waves bounce back after striking an object where as refracted waves change direction and it passes through different mediums causing the wave to change speeds. 3. Why does the sound of a person s voice sound different underwater than when they are speaking in air? The reason a person s voice sounds different when they are compared to air and underwater is that the person is speaking in two different types of mediums. Sound waves that travel underwater moves faster than sound waves in air. Conclusion: 1. Explain what would happen if a group of marching soldiers matched the natural frequency of a bridge they were marching over. If a group of marching soldiers marched on a bridge and matched the bridge s natural frequency, the bridge would collapse. 2. Explain why you can t hear sound in space. In order to hear sound, you need a medium for the sound to travel through. Outer space is empty space which is why sound cannot be transmitted. 4
