Licensing 101 Brain Development, Shaken Baby, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Objectives Define Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) Describe the causes and outcomes of SBS Define Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Discuss current practices to help prevent SIDS Understand how early education and care impacts brain development
Shaken Baby Syndrome
What is Shaken Baby Syndrome? SBS, also known as abusive head trauma, shaken impact syndrome, inflicted head injury or whiplash shake syndrome is a serious brain injury resulting from forcefully shaking an infant or toddler. Mayo Clinic, 2016
SBS Destroys brain cells Prevents the brain from getting enough oxygen Is a form of abuse May result in permanent brain damage or death
SBS Symptoms and Signs Extreme irritability Difficulty staying awake Breathing problems Poor eating Tremors Vomiting Pale or bluish skin Seizures Paralysis Coma
Signs that might be less noticeable: Other injuries that may not be initially noticeable include bleeding in the brain and eye, damage to the spinal cord and neck and fractures of the ribs, skull and bones. Evidence of prior child abuse also is common. Mayo Clinic, 2016
Even mild cases may cause a child to develop health, learning or behavior problems over time. Mayo Clinic, 2016
See a doctor immediately if a child has been shaken!
SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME IS COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE!
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
What is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome? SIDS is the unexplained death, usually during sleep, of a seemingly healthy baby less than a year old. SIDS is sometimes known as crib death because the infants often die in their cribs. Mayo Clinic, 2016
About SIDS Some 3,500 infants die in the U.S. annually from unexplained causes Most occur while the infant is sleeping in an unsafe sleeping environment. There are no tests to tell sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) apart from suffocation. Centers for Disease control, 2016
About SIDS SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants between 1 month and 1 year of age. Most SIDS deaths happen when babies are between 1 month and 4 months of age. SIDS rates for the United States have dropped steadily since 1994 in all racial and ethnic groups. National Institutes of Health, 2016 https://www.nichd.nih.gov/sts/pages/default.aspx
Ways to help reduce the risk Put babies on their back to sleep Use a firm sleep surface Eliminate soft items, such as blankets and stuffed toys Do not let the baby get too hot during sleep Keep baby s sleep area separate from yours; do not share beds
Brain Development
What do we know about brain development in infancy? Infants prefer human stimuli--a face, voice, touch, and even smell--over everything else. Infants innately orient to people's faces and prefer to listen to a speech or singing over any other sound. Talking and listening to a child is one of the best ways to make the most of his or her critical brain-building years.
What do we know about brain development in infancy? The brain is still plastic, meaning it can be shaped by experiences. Experience fires neurons. Those that are used become hardwired; unused ones are pruned. Brain development and size is related to nutrition, either for good or deficit.
Talk, sing, react, have a conversation. Provide a safe emotional place. What can you do? Offer many varied experiences. Encourage independence and exploration.
YOU can make a difference! Quality, developmentally appropriate care is vital.
