2 AIMS OF THE WORKSHOP To help you understand the stages your child goes through when learning to read To help you understand how the school teaches reading To give you a chance to try out some of the activities we use at school To give you some ideas of some ways in which you can support your child s reading development at home To give you a chance to ask questions and raise any concerns

3 STAGES OF READING DEVELOPMENT Role Play Reading Experimental Reading Early Reading Transitional Reading Independent Reading

4 ROLE PLAY READING (Nursery) Imitate what adult readers do Limited awareness of print but Concepts of print.. How to hold a book the right way up That books have a front and back How to turn the pages correctly How to tell the stories through the pictures Print conveys meaning

5 EXPERIMENTAL READING (Late Nursery/Early Reception) Memorises familiar stories Recognises familiar words and some letters Begins to focus on the print: letters, words, sentences and.. Point to words: 1:1 correspondence or matching & finger pointing Recognising familiar words and letters Try to make the words fit the text Tracks text from left to right in English

6 Focus on print EARLY READING (Reception/ Early Year One) Priority is to decode Reliance on phonics High Frequency words

7 TRANSITIONAL READING (Late Year One/Early Year Two) More focus now on reading for meaning. Self corrects Rereads Develops other strategies to decode. Context, pictures Substituting Reading on

11 What is Phonics? Teaching children how the alphabet works What the letters are and the sounds that they make on their own and together

12 Technical Words sound/phoneme grapheme segment/segmenting blend/blending vowel The sound made by a letter or group of letters A letter or sequence of letters that represent a sound. For example t, ai, igh Splitting up the word into smaller parts Merging the individual sounds together to pronounce a word (squash together). Recognising the phonemes in a written word, for example c-u-p, sh-ee-p, and merging them in the order in which they are written to pronounce the word: cup, sheep. a e i o u consonant Any other letter b c d f g h j k l m n p q r s t v w x y z High Frequency Words Tricky words Words which occur frequently in a language. In English many are regular but some are irregular or tricky, e.g. said, their, one. Words in which letter sounds do not give a perfect or regular guide to pronunciation, e.g. once, their, said.

13 How do we teach Phonics at Letters & Sounds Woodfield Infant School Children are taught phonics from Nursery up to Yr 2 Daily phonics lessons for 20 minutes Children are assessed and then given support where they most need it 6 phases in Letters and Sounds

14 The 6 Phases of Phonics Phase 1 children start to be aware of letters and sounds Phase 2 some letters and then sounds they make are introduced Phase 3 children are taught there is one grapheme for each of 44 phonemes Phase 4 adjacent consonants Phase 5 children are taught that some sounds can be spelt in different ways Phase 6 developing and practising reading and spelling skills they have learnt HFW words are taught in each phase

15 WHAT WILL IT BE? Home Learning Reading Children changing levelled home readers Writing (inc spelling & handwriting) Phonic Sounds Handwriting & letter formation for new sounds learned that week HOW OFTEN? Daily Weekly High Frequency Words WHEN WILL IT BE GIVEN? Daily On Fridays WHEN WILL IT BE RETURNED? Daily No need to return! HOW WILL IT BE ACKNOWLEDGED? Staff & Parents to collaborate to ensure that children continue to swop books and share them at home. Verbal praise given as appropriate
